Kindergarten Skills

Listed below are the minimal skill expectations broken down by grading quarter. Your child will receive a copy of the minimal skill expectations with notations along with a report card at the end of each grading quarter. Please note that these skills are MINIMAL EXPECTATIONS. We are teaching and learning so much more than these skills in each subject area. This will, however, provide a guideline for what your child is expected to learn minimally each quarter.

Minimal Skills for 1st Nine Week Period

Name colors

Recognize at least 26 of the 52 capital and lower case letters.

Know sounds of most letters.

Write first name with only the first letter capitalized.

Draw a picture & tell a complete thought that matches the picture.

Write one or more “marks” and/or letters that match their story.

Count to 10.

Count objects to 5.

Recognize shapes.


 

Minimal Skills for 2nd Nine Week Period

Read at DRA Level A.

Name colors and begin to recognize color words.

Recognize all 52 capital and lower case letters.

Know sounds of most letters.

Hear rhymes in oral language.

Write first name with only the first letter capitalized.

Recite alphabet.  (Not singing)

Recognize words that are alike.

Recall details about a story.

Use inventive spelling that shows letter/sound correspondence.

Use left to right progression in writing.

Read and tell about own writing.

Count to 20.

Count objects to 10.

Recognize numerals to 10.

Recognize shapes.

 

Minimal Skills for 3rd Nine Week Period

Read at DRA Level 2.

Recognize at least 10 sight words.

Recognize all 52 capital and lower case letters.

Know sounds of most letters.

Hear rhymes in oral language.

Recognize some phonograms. (ex.  _at, _ug, _ig, _it)

Recognize a sequence of 3 events.

Recall details about a story.

Use inventive spelling that shows letter/sound correspondence.

Use spaces between words when writing sentences.

Read and tell about own writing.

Count to 30.

Count objects to 20.

Recognize numerals to 20.

Collect, record and represent data ( ex. graphs)

Sort by attributes  (likenesses and differences)

 

Minimal Skills for 4th Nine Week Period

Read at DRA Level 3.

Recognize at least 20 sight words.

Recognize all 52 capital and lower case letters.

Know sounds of all letters.

Hear rhymes in oral language.

Recognize some word families. (ex.  cat, hat, bat etc.; hug, bug, rug etc.)

Recognize a sequence of 3 events.

Recall main idea of a story.

Use inventive spelling that shows letter/sound correspondence.

Use spaces between words when writing sentences.

Read and tell about own writing.

Count to 30.

Count objects to 20.

Recognize numerals to 20.

Develop vocabulary to describe 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes.

Sort by attributes.  (likenesses and differences)

Understands concepts of addition and subtraction.
