Summer Welcome Letter

Welcome to our class!

We hope you are ready for a fantastic year! We will have a great time learning many new concepts and ideas that you will need for your educational journey.

We will spend a good deal of time with math skills and how to be accurate when problem solving and computing. This summer, one thing that can help prepare you is using flash cards to practice multiplication facts through 12. We will also use science journals to experiment and become comfortable with the scientific method as a way to learn about the world.

We will spend a good deal of time improving our writing skills to make our essays and stories come alive for our readers. We will learn how to write multi-paragraph papers using juicy details, imagery, word choice, and figurative language. Keeping a summer journal would be a great way to practice writing.

As a part of our reading curriculum, we will work to identify main ideas and themes in both fiction and nonfiction selections. We will read and analyze current events as well as novels, stories, myths, and poems to help develop vocabulary, spelling, and reading skills.

Also, this year you will be expected to read ten of the fifteen Sunshine State Readers. You will have a goal of four Sunshine Readers for the first nine weeks and then three Sunshine Readers for the second and third nine weeks. If you would like to read some of the Sunshine State Readers this summer, I recommend reading no more than two so you will do well on the AR Test(s) when you come back to school. You will be expected to pass the Accelerated Reader test on each one. By the end of the third nine weeks, you must have read ten of the fifteen Sunshine State Readers. This goal affects your reading grade, and I hope you enjoy what these books have to offer. The Sunshine Reader list is posted on Ms. Fox’s website.

We can’t wait to see you in August. Don’t forget that “Meet Your Teacher Day” is Friday, August 16 from 1:00 – 2:30. We look forward to seeing you then!

Your new teachers,
Ms. Fox, Reading, Language Arts, & Social Studies and Mr. Savage, Math & Science
