Mrs. Easterling's Classroom Notes

Welcome back!

I hope everyone had a relaxing Winter Break and were able to enjoy the time off enjoying family and friends!  As we start off the new year, we are working harder than ever!

MATH: As you have seen on our home learning assignments, we are currently working on division.  We will be wrapping up division in the next week or so and beginning fractions.  The children have been doing a spectacular job of multiplying and dividing.  They have also worked hard on word problems that require the use of division or multiplication to solve.

A good way to prepare for fractions is to allow your child to assist you in following a recipe. Because recipes often use a good amount of fractions in the ingredients required to make a dish, your child will become familiar with the differences among standard fractions.  It is a win-win situation!  They will experience first-hand how math is used in everyday life and the whole family enjoys a yummy dish!

Your child received their username and password for
www.ixl.com in September.  This program provides wonderful opportunities for the reinforcement and extension of skills acquired in class. Please allow your child to have a few minutes each night on this program, as it encourages the students to expand on their newly acquired math skills.

SCIENCE: We have completed several classroom experiments since the beginning of the year.  The students are really getting familiar with the scientific process and are enjoying seeing how changing conditions can affect a conclusion.  They are also gaining valuable experience in writing up simple lab reports to go with our Guided Inquiries completed in class.  I am looking forward to more experiments and excitement of our budding scientists.

Please feel free to email if you have any comments or concerns!
