My love for language learning inspired me to study Spanish throughout high
school and college. After graduating from Riverview High, I began my
university studies at MCC. I soon transferred to the University of the
Americas in Cholula, Mexico where I studied for one year. I finished my
undergraduate studies at the University of Florida where I received a BA in
Psychology. I later received a Masters in Applied Linguistics specializing in
TESL (teaching English as a second language) from the University of South
Florida. I have taught ESOL at the adult and middle school levels, and
Spanish in high school, middle school, and elementary school in both private
and public schools over the past 25 years.
Being a second language learner myself has helped me better appreciate the
needs and challenges of my ESOL students. My goal is to provide them with a
non-threatening learning environment where all students feel comfortable
using their new language. We will focus on listening, speaking, reading, and
writing skills in English including studies and topics in the content areas
of math, science, and social studies. Our ESOL classroom provides a wonderful
opportunity for students from different countries to share their diverse
cultures while sharing successes in learning a new language and culture.
Because, learning a language requires time and hard work, class
expectations in all levels of ESOL involve homework on a daily basis.
Students need to do as much reading outside of school as possible and should
watch TV and movies in ENGLISH to improve their listening skills and cultural
knowledge.

Sobre La Maestra
Mi amor por aprender un idioma me inspiró a estudiar el español en
bachillerato y en la Universidad. Después de graduarme de la Escuela
Secundaria Riverview, comencé mis estudios universitarios en MCC. Luego me
transferí a la Universidad de Las Américas en Cholula, Méjico donde estudié
por un año. Terminé mis estudios de licenciatura en la Universidad de Florida
donde recibí mi Licenciatura en Psicología. Más adelante recibí mi Maestría
en Lingüística aplicada con especialización en TESL (Enseñando Inglés como
segunda lengua) de la Universidad de South Florida. He enseñado ESOL (Inglés
para hablantes de otros idiomas) a adultos y a nivel de escuela intermedia, y
español en la escuela secundaria, escuela intermedia, y primaria en escuelas
privadas y públicas por los últimos 25 años.
La misión de la clase
El ser yo misma una aprendiza de un segundo idioma, me ha ayudado a
comprender mejor las necesidades y desafíos de mis estudiantes ESOL. Mi meta
es proporcionarles un ambiente no amenazante de aprendizaje donde los
estudiantes se pueden sentir cómodos utilizando su nuevo idioma. Nos vamos a
enfocar en las destrezas de oír, hablar, leer y escribir en inglés incluyendo
el estudio y tópicos de las áreas de contenido en matemáticas, ciencias y
estudios sociales. Nuestro salón de ESOL provee una maravillosa oportunidad
para que los estudiantes de diferentes países puedan compartir sus diferentes
culturas a la vez que comparten sus éxitos al aprender un nuevo idioma y
cultura.
Ya que el aprender un nuevo idioma requiere tiempo y trabajo duro, las
expectativas de las clases de ESOL en todos los niveles implican tener tarea
a diario. Los estudiantes necesitan leer mucho fuera de la escuela y deben
ver televisión y películas en INGLES para mejorar sus destrezas de oído y
cultura general.
