Summer Reading Assignment: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
You are to read this novel over the summer. You do NOT have to read the
introduction, "The Custom House." Start on Chapter 1--"The Prison Door."
Writing Assignment: At the end of each chapter, write a summary paragraph.
Make sure you include information about the characters, their personalities,
and the events that occurred. This will be turned in to me the day of the
test, and it will be your study guide for the test.
Sometime during the first week of school you will be given a test on this
novel. Be prepared.
Project Assignment: Found Poem
If you received a sheet from Mrs. Monn, you have been assigned a character
from the novel. If you did not receive a sheet from Mrs. Monn, you are to
select one of the following characters: Hester, Pearl, Dimesdale,or
Chillingworth.
As you read, you need to find phrases and words that represent your
character. Mark these in your book (highlight if it is your personal book or
use post-it notes) or write these phrases/words and their page number on your
own paper. When you finally decide on the phrases and words you are going to
use in your poem, write them down along with their page number and tape this
to the back of your display. Now take these words and phrases and arrange
them to form your poem. (They do not have to be in order based on numerical
sequence of page numbers in the book.)
You will use the exact words from the novel to create a "Character Found"
poem. You may use descriptions of the character, dialogue of the character,
dialogue of others about your character, and actions of the character. Your
choices should draw on language that is unique and paints a picture of this
character. Your word choices should keep the "voice" of the character and
his/her personality consistent throughout the poem.
When arranging your selection, utilize at least two poetic devices (i.e.,
alliteration, repetition, sensory language, similes, metaphors,
personification, imagery, etc....)
Type the poem or write it in blue or black ink. Use poetic form (lines,
stanzas.) Choose appropriate font and size for your poem so that it will be
easy to see on your display.
Display your "Character Found" poem on a piece of poster board or
construction paper. Your are also to display a picture of your character (as
you envision him or her through the author's characterization.) Display other
pictures that symbolize your character. Creativity is appreciated.
On the back of the display, identify the two poetic devices used and the
lines from your poem in which they are used.
You will present these to the class. Bring them to school on the second day
of class.
Your grade will be based on the following:
Voice of the character (word choice, consistency)
Use and identification of at least two poetic devices
Creative display
Quality and symbolism of illustrations and/or photos
Oral presentation ( presence/attitude, rate of speaking, volume)
