Is there an Independent Reading requirement?

Yes, all students are required to read a minimum of four 
Accelerated Reading books and take the AR test (with a minimum 
score of 80%)every year.  
Students are to read a minimum of one book a month throughout the 
school year. Total books read will equal nine (9).  The students 
will be required to write a Dear Mrs. Lees letter every other 
week, wherein they will relate what has happened in the book 
being read during the previous week.  This letter is due EVERY 
other Monday, unless the school is closed.  In that event, the 
letter will be due on the first day back after the closed day.  
There will be a variety of book projects regarding books read 
throughout the school year.

Grading for Independent Reading will be as follows:  A quarterly 
grade for the literary response in the weekly letters, and a 
reading project that will be due the last week of the marking 
period.

Do we use laptops in class?

Yes, all written reports must be typed.  There will be research 
papers assigned that will require the use of the laptop.  Laptops 
must be charged and ready for use in class.  You will be given 
advanced notice as to which day you will use the laptop in 
class.  English is not the only class that uses the laptop. 
Appropriate use of the laptop is expected.  There will be 
consequences for inappropriate use of laptops.  Students are not 
allowed to go to other websites, without teacher permission.  
This is an educational tool, not entertainment.  All 
corresepondence to other students will be monitored.
