MUSICAL TRAINING IMPROVES MEMORY
By Dwayne Hunter,
Betterhumans Staff, July 29, 2003
Children who have musical training also have significantly better
verbal
memory than children who don't, and the difference increases the
longer they study. The finding was made by psychologists at the
Chinese University of Hong Kong and reported in the July issue of
the
Journal of Neuropsychology. Researchers Anges Chan, Yim-Chi Ho
and Mei-Chun Cheung propose that music training during childhood
contributes to the reorganization and increased development of
the
brain's left temporal lobes in musicians. They believe that this
occurrence facilitates cognitive processing mediated by that
specific
brain area -- verbal memory.

CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE: The Impact of The Arts on Learning
Edited By Edward B. Fiske
The ultimate challenge for American education is to place all
children on
pathways toward success in school and in life. Through
engagement
with the arts, young people can better begin lifelong journeys of
developing their capabilities and contributing to the world
around them.
The arts teach young people how to learn by giving them the first
step:
the desire to learn. Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts
on
Learning also shows that the arts can play a vital role in
learning how to
learn, an essential ability for fostering achievement and growth
throughout their lives.

TEN LESSONS THE ARTS TEACH by Wendy Katz
Although some educators view the arts as closer to the rim of
education
than to its core, Elliot Eisner argues that the arts are a
critically
important means for developing complex and subtle aspects of the
mind. He
outlines "ten lessons" that illustrate how various
forms of thinking are
evoked, developed, and refined through the arts:
1) The arts teach children to make good judgements about
qualitative relationships;
2) The arts teach children that problems can have more than
one
solution and that questions can have more than one
answer;
3) The arts celebrate multiple perspectives;
4) The arts teach children that, in complex forms of
problem solving,
purposes are seldom fixed;
5) The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their
literal form
nor numbers exhaust what we can know;
6) The arts teach students that small differences can have
large
effects;
7) The arts teach students to think through and within a
material;
8) The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said;
9) The arts enable us to have experience we can have from
no other
source; and
10) The arts' position in the school curriculum symbolizes
to the
young what adults believe is important.
