Koala Kids Read
pouch books
"Take-Home reading program"
The idea for my "Koala Kids" was shared by LHS colleagues,
Martha Morgan and Amanda Cook and adpated for Mrs. Vensko's first and second
grade classrooms. Thank you so much for sharing your great ideas for this
take-home reading program.
In our first and second grade
departmentalized classroom, the children will become "Koala Kids" and their
take-home pouches will hold books instead of baby joeys!
Reading for a minimum of 15-20 minutes
each night is the MOST important reading homework for your first and second
grader. A leveled book or decodable reader will be chosen especially with your
child's reading level in mind. All books will be placed inside the take-home
pouch. Take-home pouches will be used all year long, so it is important for
your child to take good care of them, along with the books inside the pouches.
All pouch books should be recorded on the Koala Kids reading log. Please
listen to your child read each night and initial on the line. Books should be
recorded one time only.
Koala Kids who complete their nightly
reading log will receive sweet treats in his or her pouch. For every 5 books
(first grade) or 10 books (second grade) read and recorded, students receive a
lollipop. Students who read 100 books will enter into the "100 Readers Club"
and will receive a special cuddly Koala Kids prize with a blue and gold LHS
t-shirt:
Please don't miss out on the opportunity
to help your child become a better reader this year! Share the joy of reading
and read with your child every single day for at least 15-20 minutes. Happy
Reading!
