Math Workshop

 What is a math workshop?

A math workshop is an engaging and exciting way to teach math to second graders!  I am very excited to start using this workshop approach in math, as I have already implemented a writing workshop and plan to add a reading workshop this year, too!  I feel that the workshop approach really allows me to differentiate my math instruction in order to best meet the needs of my students.  My math workshop will be set up according to the following schedule each day:

Daily Math Workshop Schedule:
(12:30 - 1:45)

Calendar Math -10 minutes long at the start of math workshop time

Mini-Lesson  - 15 minutes

Guided Whole Group Practice-

10 minutes

During calendar math time each day, the following math concepts are practiced and reinforced:  place value, skip counting, patterning, geometry (shapes, flips, rotations with calendar patterns) time, counting money, tallying, graphing, and determing odd and even.

Teacher will teach a mini-lesson on the Sunshine State Standards and target skills from our Harcourt Math book.  Students gather together on the rug while the teacher teaches from the easel.

Students are engaged in guided practice of the skill directly after the mini-lesson either on the rug or at their seats.  Mini-white boards are used often during guided practice of the skill.

Guided Math –20 - 30minutes long

(Small group instruction w/teacher, independent seatwork practice, hands-on math stations)

Teacher breaks the students into small groups at this time for reteach, practice, and enrichment purposes.  Teacher meets with two groups per day, usually for about 15-20 minutes each, depending on the skill.  At this time, the students are engaged in a hands-on activity with the teacher using manipulatives.

Groups are flexible and are formed according to need, ability level, readiness, etc.   A pre-assessment is given at the beginning of each chapter in order to form the groups.

***After a lot of trial and error this year (and I mean A LOT),  I have found that it is most manageable for me to have two groups only (challenge group for enrichment and reteach group for extra practice).***

While some students work with the teacher for guided math, all other students work at their seats on independent seatwork.  Assigned seatwork is immediate practice of the skill being taught in the mini-lesson.  When finished with the seatwork from our Harcourt math book, students go to their assigned math station with a partner.   I have a large pocket chart to show student partnerships and station rotations.  At this time, all students complete one math station per day.   Stations are always used to practice skills previously learned.

Some of our math stations include:  math versatiles, computer games, puzzles & games, Hot Dots talking pen and flash cards, Math Sharkspattern blocks and cards, estimation jar, graphing activity,  tangrams and cards, math scrolls (Thanks to Mrs. Molitor for this GREAT math idea!!), Drops in a Bucket review pageRead About Math, folder games (Take it To Your Seat!), and Mountain Math.

Sharing Session5-10 minutes long

During share time, the students and teacher come back together as a class and meet for a whole group discussion and quick review.  Share time provides a social context for students to share their work with the teacher and their peers.
