Lisa Shaw has been teaching English Composition and Literature at Miami-Dade
College since 1993 and before that enjoyed teaching stints at Brooklyn
College, Kingsborough Community College, Florida Atlantic University, and
Broward Community College. She holds an M.F.A. in poetry from Brooklyn
College, and a graduate certificate in Loss and Healing from St. Thomas
Univeristy,where she is currently completing a second M.S. in Pastoral
Ministry. Her poetry has appeared in various literary journals and small
magazines, and her curriculum guides have been published by The Miami Herald,
The Sun Sentinel,the Newspaper Publishers' Associaton of America and Pearson
Education (online textbook companion sites). Outside of academic life,
she is an animal communication specialist and Reiki Master
whose practice spans the United States. She gives courses and workshops
in meditation and alternative healing,volunteers in wildlife rescue (Muscovy
ducks)remains and a lifelong student. Her alternative work with animals has
been featured on WSVN, Channel 10, ABC News, and in the Sun-Sentinel and The
Miami Herald. In June of 2002, she was awarded the the John and James L.
Knight Endowed Teaching Chair in Communication and in June, 2006, she was
awarded the Jack and Ruth Kassewitz Endowed Chair for teaching excellence.
She has received two Golden Apple Learning Innovations Grants, one for a
multicultural learning community with Math and Psychology classes and one for
an intergenerational oral history project and anthology compiled
by LIT 2480 students. She is the co-advisor of the award winning student
literary magazine, AXIS. She has served as the Florida State Representative
to the Two Year College English Association Southeastand proudly
represents the North Campus faculty as United Faculty of Miami Dade College
North Campus Co-Vice President.
My mission as a professor is three-fold:
1) to share knowledge my students can use to become informed,
effective, and responsible members of the community (this means coming to
class on time, regularly, and completing ALL assignments!)
2) to engage my students in critical thinking and explorations that will
broaden their existing perspectives
3) to have a good time while doing 1 and 2
