As the new school year begins, we are excited your son/daughter has selected
Printing within the Industrial Education Program at Miami Carol City Senior
High School. Being so, I would like to inform you the Program’s Objective,
Program Description, Homework Policy, Academic Grading criteria, Academic
Grading Scale, Class Rules and Consequences, Conduct Grading Scale, Material
Criteria, Instructor’s Contact Information, Literacy Program, Make-Up Work
Policy, Printing Program Contents Scope, Curriculum Framework, Florida’s
Right To Know Law, Safety Pledge Form, and Parent(s)/Guardian Acknowledgment
Form.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVE: (Industrial and Technology Education Program)
The Industrial and Technology Education Program is a program designed to
train students for entry into the trade industry. When a student has
satisfactorily completed at least 450 hours of training and has the
instructor’s recommendation, he/she may be placed on a job under the
direction of an Industrial Cooperative Education Teacher/Coordinator. A
student who completes at least 810 hours with a “C” average or better, or
successfully completes 90% of the training tasks in a competence-based
program, shall be awarded an Industrial Trade Certificate in the selected
curriculum of study.

The purpose of the Printing Program is to prepare students for initial
employment in the Printing Industry. This program is designed to cover three
(3) years of classroom and practical learning experiences in all phases of
Offset Printing.
Classroom and shop/lab experiences, field trips, and guest speakers will be
utilized to enable the student to become proficient in applications related
to Administrative Support Operation, Pre-press/Imaging Operations which
include: Electronic Publishing, Design and Layout, Digital Camera/Darkroom
Procedures, Image Assembly, Platemaking, Presswork, Digital Printing, and
Bindering and Finishing Operations.
The course content includes training in communication leadership, human
relations, employability skills, shop safety, safe and efficient work
practices, and developing proper production skills and attitudes to be
employed in the Printing Industry.
This program also prepares the student to set up, operate and maintain
preparation, printing, binding and finishing equipment used in the Printing
Industry. When an appropriate level of competence is reach of 405 hours of
instruction, a student may be placed in an Internship or the Industrial
Cooperative Education Program (ICE) to work in the Printing Industry while
enrolled in school.

This is Florida’s Department of Education curriculum framework for Printing.
It contains printing major concepts and content that is comprised to the
program.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: continue (Printing: State Course Number: 8739000)
810 hours of instruction with a grade of “C” or better in academic and
conduct are needed to be consisted as a program completer. Graduates of this
program will be prepared for further specialized training and education in
Printing and other related technology.
HOMEWORK POLICY:
Homework will be given on Monday’s and Tuesday’s. The assignments will be in
the form of internet research and using student’s workbook and class text
book OFFSET LITHOGRAPHIC TECHNOLOGY 2000 edition by Kenneth F. Hired.

Independent Reading Practice (IRP) via the internet for assignment.
ACADEMIC GRADING CRITERIA:
Students electing to take this course will receive a letter grade for the
completion of assigned class work and laboratory work. Laboratory grade
will be assessed by visual observation based on the student perfecting
skills in the following areas with 70% accuracy on job accuracy, quality of
workmanship, safety practice, housekeeping, pre and post preparation of the
make ready process. The student is also expected and required to meet all
classroom objectives with 70% accuracy in the following areas:

ACADEMIC GRADING SCALE:
100% – 90% = A
89% – 80% = B
79% – 70% = C
69% – 60% = D

CLASS RULES and CONSEQUENCES GRADING CRITERIA:

Every new nine weeks of the grading period, each student will receive an “A”
(30 points) in conduct. Conduct grade will be computed by subtracting the
amount of class conduct standards penalty points of each encroached
violation.
CONDUCT GRADING SCALE:
30 pts – 25 pts = A
24 pts – 16 pts = B
15 pts – 10 pts = C
9 pts – 5 pts = D
4 pts – 0 pts = F
MATERIAL CRITERIA:
It is the student responsibility to be prepared for all class assignments as
well as materials listed below:
Ink Pens (Black or Blue Ink) Writing Paper or Writing Pad
Number 2 Leaded Pencils Pocket Size Dictionary
Note Pads 1 or 2GB Flash Drive

BELL RINGING ACTIVITIES:
Bell Ringing Activities is a school wide program designed for
the purposes of improving the student’s writing, reading, and mathematics
skills which will take place for 15 minutes Monday thru Friday during each
period of the day. This program will be devoted to activities such as
Vocabulary Activities, Word Phrases Activities, and Writing by the usage of a
Student Journal. Twenty per cent (20%) of the assignments will be considered
in their academic grade.
MAKE-UP WORK POLICY:
In the event a student is absent or tardy to class, any class or lab
assignments may be completed within one week provided their absence or tardy
admit to class was excused. No student will be allowed to complete or make-
up class or lab assignments if their admit to class was unexcused.

In the best interest of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the
instructor, each student and his/her parent(s)/guardian should be aware what
hazardous materials the student will be exposing to in the Industrial
Education Program of Printing. It should be note that the student may or may
not come in contact with some of the chemicals listed.
The objective of providing this information is to assist the instructor and
the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system in protecting the health and
safety of the students and other personnel who may come in contact with
hazardous products and to comply with the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard
(HCS) 29 CFR, Part 1910.1200, and Title III, Section 313 of the Superfund
Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986.
The Hazardous Communication Standard requires that all student/personnel who
may be exposing to hazardous materials be provided by their employer with
accurate information on the potential hazards of the materials and trained
in proper work practices to minimize any risk, and its antidote. Enclosed
(Attachment D) is the latest edition of materials in which your son/daughter
may come in contact with while enrolled in the Printing Program as provided
by the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for products marketed by the
Printing Industry.

The Printing Program contents scope is a schedule of subjects to be covered
during the 2007- 2008 school year. It is the scope of the different printing
levels of printing chapters.

SAFETY PLEDGE:
I pledge that I will follow all of the safety rules discussed in class and
in class textbook Offset Lithographic Technology by Kenneth F. Hired. I will
also follow all of the safety regulations given by the instructor. I will
not use any printing equipment such as binding equipment, cameras,
collators, computers, finishing equipment, folders, paper cutters,
Platemakers, presses, etc. without the permission of the instructor. I will
report all accidents to the instructor immediately, no matter how small they
may be. I will help to maintain a safe shop by working in my assigned area
and by not disrupting the educational process of other students.
