Course Syllabus
English III Regular -A30
Ms. L. Kestle
This course will increase students’ ability to read, write, and speak in the English language.
Critical thinking skills will be emphasized throughout the course. In addition, technology will
be incorporated. Finally, a large part of the course will involve preparation for standardized
testing.
Students will achieve the following objectives:
1. Read and critically comprehend American literature. All literature comes from Elements
of Literature (Fifth course). The following works will be covered: “of Plymouth
Plantation,” “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” “Rip Van Wrinkle,” “The Raven,” “Moby
Dick,” “Dust Tracks on a Road” and The Crucible
2. Use such critical thinking skills as making inferences and comparing and contrasting.
3. Determine word meaning from context.
4. Identify such elements of literature as plot, theme, character and setting.
5. Recognize and use such literary devices as figures of speech, irony, and foreshadowing.
6. Use standard conventions of English language.
7. Correctly organize and write a five-paragraph essay, with focus on audience and tone.
8. Utilize opportunities to listen, speak, and perform throughout the course.
9. Use technology in research and test preparation.
10. Score 300 or higher on FCAT Reading.
Grading Scale:
90 - 100 A
80 - 89 B
70 - 79 C
60 - 69 D
Below 60 F
0 = 2 F’s
Homework Policy:
Homework will be given from all or part of the following options: 1. Nine-week project. 2.
Sustained silent reading for 30 minutes each night. 3. Finish writing assignments started in
class. 4. Assignments from literature and grammar books. Homework is due on the assigned date.
No late work will be accepted.
Class rules:
1. Be present and on time.
2. Stay in assigned seat.
3. Raise hand to speak.
4. No loud talking.
5. No eating or drinking
6. Bring materials everyday. This includes English notebook, paper, blue or black ink pen
and textbook
Consequences of Breaking Rules:
1. Warning
2. Conduct cut
3. parent contact
4. Referral to an administrator
Class Absence and Tardy policy:
1. For each unexcused tardy, a zero will be recorded for that day’s first assignment.
2. Students will not be able to make up work from unexcused absences.
3. For the third unexcused tardy and/or absence, parents will be notified.
4. If the tardies and/or absences continue, an administrator will be notified.
