This page contains poems that can be used to help reinforce the reading of
the sight words that your child is learning to read during each nine week
period. Print a poem and have your child highlight the focus sight
words with an orange or yellow crayon. As your child practices reading the
poem, they should point to each word with one to one correspondence. If
they come to a word that they cannot read, remind them to use
the reading strategies they know to figure out the word on their own. The
reading strategies they are learning are...
Look at the pictures,
Point to the words,
Get your mouth ready (make the beginning sound),
Stretch the word (sound it out),
Chunking (Look for chunks such as sh, th, ing, at, etc.)
