Oak Hall students and faculty are happy to welcome Uruguayan Fulbright exchange teachers Eli Lettier, Marcela Camejo and Carolina Pratt who will be visiting our school from February 5th through the 18th.  They will be observing classes and sharing activities with our students.  Please join us in welcoming them to our community.

Spanish students will be performing an assembly on Monday, February 8th in the upper school theater, from 9:40 - 10:20 am, to welcome the teachers.  The third graders will present a puppet show and fourth and fifth graders will perform poetry and sing songs.

We wish them a wonderful visit to the United States!

Muchas Gracias.....
Oak Hall book donation received in Uruguay
Dear Libby,Donation.jpg
Teachers and Principals from the 13 schools that hosted U.S. teachers came for a meeting today.  We gave each teacher a bag with books that Oak Hall generously donated (These were evenly divided among the schools).
Needless to say, they were thrilled!
I have sent you a picture of the entire group.
All the best,
Patricia Vargas

Tango demonstration by 5 - 8 year olds

IMG_0638.JPGOak Hall is proud to offer our students an opportunity to practice their Spanish language skills and to exchange information and experiences with children in Uruguay.  Last year our fourth graders sent a video postcard to school children their age in Tacuarembo as part of the Fulbright teacher exchange program.  They told their new friends something they thought was important about life in Gainesville, and asked some very interesting questions.  What's the current style for girls in Uruguay?  Do you hunt for food or buy it in a store?  How long is your school day and what do you study?

The students in Tacuarembo watched those videos and sent back answers and some questions of their own.  (See video link below)  Most recently we filmed a new set of responses to their specific questions.  The school in this film and Oak Hall will be establishing live video links in the next month and we hope that by the time we return from winter break we will be able to report that we are holding regular joint classes in English and Spanish for our fourth and fifth graders.  Being able to speak directly with these children should provide some interesting exchanges and certainly a better understanding of our global community.  As always, parents will be welcome!

Oak Hall just sent a shipment to Uruguay of school supplies and books.  Here is the email we got from the coordinator of the Fulbright Organization in Montevideo:
.Libby,

Wow! I opened the boxes, to make sure which ones contained the webcam, etc.And I also saw all the wonderful books. You are amazing!

I talked with Raquel – the director – today, and told her that we will mail the boxes to them. About the books, you told me that we could send them where we thought was best. But I need your opinion.

Some will of course go to School 13. About the others: On November 13th we will hold a meeting with the teachers of English and the principals of the Schools that hosted the U.S. teachers this year. The idea is to talk about their experience and to make suggestions for the following year. This meeting could not be held earlier because an Inspector asked that it be done at this date. Do you think that we could divide the books among these 13 schools? I could take pictures with the teachers receiving the books and send them to you to share with Oak Hall.

Please let me know your thoughts and if you have a different idea, just let me know.

All the best,

Patricia
