Directions For Covering Your Textbook

Materials Needed

Brown Grocery Bag

Scissors

Tape

  1. Open bag. Cut bag along one corner all the way down to the bottom. Turn and cut all around the bottom of the bag. When done, you should have cut off the bottom piece and have a long piece of brown paper left.
  2. Put the blank side down. (Any writing should be facing up.) Place your text book in the center of the paper. Fold up one side and crease it along the bottom edge of the textbook. Take the other side and crease it along the bottom edge of the textbook. Remove textbook. There should be an “imprint” of where your text was.
  3. Fold the top portion of the paper along the crease mark, flattening it all the way down the paper. Fold the bottom portion of the paper along the second crease mark, again flattening it all the way down the paper.
  4. Place text on paper to make sure the top of the fold lines up with the top edge of the text and the bottom of the text aligns with the bottom edge. If the book sticks out some…then you need to release some of the fold to compensate. It should be pretty close.
  5. Slide textbook down the paper. Open the front cover and hold it at a 90 degree angle. Fold the paper over, so that a little less than half (about 1/3) of the paper is folded into the cover. This makes pockets in your book jacket.
  6. Slide the front cover into the newly formed pockets. Do this gently so as not to tear the pockets. Close the cover and slide the text back to make it a tighter fit.
  7. Flip the entire work (so that the front is now facing down.) Lift the back cover to a 90 degree angle. Fold the flap of excess paper over the back cover, crease it over the edge. (There should be a lot of extra paper.) Again measure about 1/3 down the cover and cut the excess away.
  8. Slide the back cover into the newly formed pockets. Close and your book should be covered!
  9. Make sure you place a little strip of tape around the pockets so they don’t want to slide off. Do not tape it to the book!
