I am revising the classroom cash reward system. Like any effective system,
it is necessary (at times) to go back to the drawing board. I also welcome
suggestions from parents because often times your thought processes and (of
course) the love and devotion for your child enable me to better myself and
the systems inside the classroom.
Beginning this Monday, October 6, 2008 the Classroom Cash system will be as
follows:
1. For every day of the week the child stays on green they will earn one
dollar.
2. At the end of the week the School Store will be opened.
3. All items within the school store will be worth a total of $5.00 (or the
maximum amount of school days that were in that particular school week).
4. Each week we will begin again with an empty wallet, earning the money
and privledge to go to the School Store.
I will be explaining the sysem to the children on Monday. This will
accomplish two things: it will give an immediate response to the action of
pulling a card (this will negate time out on the fence at recess - WITH THE
EXCEPTION OF A PULL TO RED...if a child pulls to red it is necessary not
only for them to serve the consequence of a "time out" at recess, but also
to conference with administration.) and it will also not confuse any child
who may have pulled a card during the week, but yet has saved monies from
previous rewards. In the past they were able to spend if they had money,
irregardless of whether they had pulled a card or not...with the new system
they will understand that the consequences of pulling a card is that they
are unable to pick anything from treasure box (school store).

OLD SYSTEM:
Classroom Cash is a reward system that is in place for each child. Each
student received a wallet with their name in it, they keep their wallet
inside their pencil box for safe keeping. Throughout the day they are
rewarded with cash for good choices (this includes, but is not limited to:
following rules, following procedures, showing kindness to fellow
classmates, being helpful, being respectful).
Each Friday the students get to choose whether they will "shop" with their
monies or if they will save for another time. The Store will include a
varitey of items at a variety of prices. During the introduction of
Classroom Cash I explained to the children that larger items come with
larger price tags (I used the personal example of wanting to purchase a new
vehicle, explaining to the students that it would be necessary for me to
save a great deal of money for a new car, however I wouldn't have to save as
much money if I wanted a pack of gum). This Friday I allowed the students
to choose items from either a one dollar basket or a two dollar basket.
You can help make this program a success by encouraging your child's good
choices as well as sending in any sort of "donations" for our "store". I
currently have items like pencils (dinosaur), bracelets, pens (Spiderman),
small stuffed animals, play dough, balls. These are all smaller items that
I placed in the one and two dollar baskets. I will be keeping my eyes
peeled for items in the dollar section of Target as well as Wal-Mart. If
you happen to be out and about and stumble upon an item that you think may
motivate the earning of some cash let me know or send it in!
