Understanding How Grades Work

                        Understanding How Grades Work*

The following tips will help you keep on top of your grades. Remember- I am here for you! Please call upon me anytime there is something you do not understand or a problem you need help solving. Refer to the Student Code of Conduct in your agenda book.

Grades:
We use the
Miami-Dade County Grading Scale:

A= 90-100, 3.5-4.0,√+  =Awesome job- You’ve really got it!

B=80-89, 2.5-3.49, √    =Beautiful effort! You are on the right track.

C=70-79,1.5-2.49,  √-  =Could  do better. Take more time to get the job done.

D=60-69,1.0-1.49        =Don’t give up. Do seek help when you need it.

F=0-59, 0.0-0.99          =Find the time to ask questions, so you can understand and do your best.

Z= Zero (You will receive one zero for each grade of any assignment you do not turn in to the teacher.) You will also receive 0's for unexcused absences, so be sure to bring notes from home! When you are absent, talk to me about the make-up work. I will give you the assignments you missed because missing one day of block scheduling is like missing two days of school. Therefore, completing all make up work, including journal and Gotcha!, is extremely important! Excessive absences could lead to administrative conferences. It is important for you to come to school each day! You can also check my website at

http://teacherweb.com/FL/RichmondHeightsMiddleSchool/LKSeamanLanguageArts/ to find out what you missed. Click on MAKE UP WORK FROM ABSENCES.

Effort:
Effort is based on the amount of work you complete and do not complete:

1=The best- You have only one or two 0's for your assignments.

2=Needs improvement-You have three to six 0's for your assignments. (I call home when you have three 0's because three 0's will lower your grades.)

3=Parent Conference Time- You have seven or more 0's for any assignments you have not done. (You are in danger of failing the class with that many 0's.)

(You will also receive an automatic 2 in effort if your grade drops from one nine weeks to the next.)

Conduct:

Conduct relates to your behavior and how much you respect yourself, your teacher, and your peers. While I much prefer to give you rewards for good conduct (weekly row rewards, nine-week certificates), the following will result in conduct cuts, detentions, change of seat, referrals, or parent conferences. Two conduct cuts lower your conduct grade by one.

Gum, food, or drinks (I will ask you to stop eating, chewing, or drinking.)

Unexcused Tardies (Three unexcused tardies will result in a lunch detention and phone call home. Each tardy over three will result in more detentions, including after-school or administrative detentions.)

Excessive Talking (You may receive a change of seat or a time out.)

Rudeness to anyone in the classroom (Student will receive a lunch detention for poor behavior with a temporary teacher or guest and be required to write a letter of apology.)

Ignoring repeated requests from the teacher (3 strikes)

Conduct Grades

A= Always on task, on time, and on target

B= Behaves well almost all of the time

C= Could do better with more effort

D= Does not contribute positively to class

F= Fails to behave in an appropriate manner and is disrespectful to self, classmates, guests, and/or teacher.

*The great thing about grades, effort, and conduct is you can always improve them!
