Numeroff
I love
using Laura Numeroff's wonderful books to help
teach predication, sequencing, transitional
words, and circular stories. The formats of
each story lends itself to wonderful
adaptations, extensions and jump starts some
fabulous writing. As the year moves along I
will share some of our writing examples.

Chimps Don't Wear Glasses
Use these two books to explore the
imagination of "what ifs." After reading
and enjoying, each child can design their
own page for a class book. Use one of the
following formats for them to copy or give
them a pre-written form.
______________ (name of animal ) don't wear ______________ (kind of clothing).
______________ (name of animal) don't ____________ (kind of activity)
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
If You Give a Moose a Muffin
If You Give a Pig a Pancake
If You Take a Mouse to the Movies
If You Take a Mouse to School
These wonderful circular stories are great for illustrating prediction and
repetition. While reading have the
students predict what the character is
going to do next. After reading, help
them recognize that the story ends where
it began! Make a story circle to
sequence the events. This is a way to
visually see the circular story pattern.
To make a circle story web simply draw a large circle on the board, chart
paper, or overhead projector.
Draw lines out and away from the circle.
Numerically label each line. I like to use 10 but you can use more or less
depending upon the number of events.
As the story is reviewed, write the event on a line.
Text-to-Text Comparisons: After reading If you Take a Mouse to School and If
you Take a Mouse to the Movies compare
similarities and differences between the
two stories. Venn diagrams are a great
tool for visually showing similarities
and differences between the two stories.
You may want to cook or share a related snack after each book. Some examples
might be:
the Mouse--mouse shaped sugar cookie.
the Moose--muffins
the Pig--pancakes
the Movies-popcorn
the School-chocolate chip cookies
Book Sequels- After all the stories are read, make a class book or individual
stories using a story cloze. "If you
Give a _____ a ______." OR "If You Take
a ______ to the ______." Brainstorm
possibilities to get their minds in
gear; list on a chart for easy reference
for those students who need the extra
assistance.

The Chicken Sisters
This book is a twist to The Three Little Pigs. Your class will love how the
chicken sisters take care of the wolf.
Use it as a text-to-text lesson,
comparing the two stories.
Here's a couple of crafts to use as follow-up center activities or to retell
the story:
Chicken T-Tube
Chick Hand Print Craft
Wolf Paper Bag Puppet
What Mommies Do Best
What Daddies Do Best
How about using these stories to design a class book about parents. Children
have some wonderful ideas about why
their Moms and Dads are the best.
