Classroom Tour

Our Classroom Tour

Here are a few photos of our room at the beginning of the year. It looks so empty without the children and activities. I'll update as time permits. There have been several changes since that first day. We've added our class animals {hermit crabs, Betta fish, Fire Bellied Toads, African fat Tailed Gecko and map turtles}. Also, the walls are full of wonderful student work. We have our "Read-to-Self bags" and CD reading areas. I'll be updating more pictures in the next couple of weeks.

Reading Oasis

This is our inviting reading area. We call it our Reading Oasis. The comfy chairs and carpet get lots of use this year! I've added a new bookshelf since this picture was taken to hold the many magazines, and books that we have in our room.

Teams

This is a view of how I group desks to form teams. This will be a grouping for 5 members. This year, there are 4 members per team. The middle desks hold white boards, language and math mini-offices and other supplies.

Morning Meeting Area

We start our day at this meeting area. We use this for discussing what we'll be discovering throughout the day, our daily schedule, listening to announcements, read-alouds and participating in calendar math.

Calendar Math-Up Close

This is a closer view of what we do with our calendar math area. Not very clear is our number line for "Number of the Day," and "Estimation Bags." 3 bags hold counters. Thne 1st is labeled with the least amount of counters, the middle has a question mark and the last is labeled with the greatest amount of counters.

Literacy Easel-Front View

This is the new literacy chart/easel station I purchased this past summer. I'll use the front to post morning greetings and write interactive writings.

Literacy Easel-Back View

This is the back of my new literacy easel. I love this part because it has a felt surface. The children and I will use this for many story retelling activities.

Back of Room

This is a view of the back of the room. The photo was taken before children entered the room and filled our cubbies. The area on the left will be our writing station and the area on the right is our science exploration zone.

Science Exploration Station

This area will also prove to be a favorite stop for the students throughout the year.

Coaching Group Area

This is where I will meet with small groups of children to help coach them with reading, writing and math.

Beanie Baby Strategies Board

This will become our reading strategies board very soon. I just discovered the use of these beanie babies to help teach decoding and comprehension strategies. I can't wait to start using them!

Literacy Bag Display

Under the white board in our room, I have many of the take home literacy bags displayed, that the children will be taking home. I attached a vertical coat rack to the wall to hold all the bags.

Listening Stations

Behind one of the book shelves, we have hooks for our Listening Station Bags. These are used as a choice during Daily 5 choice time. They each hold a portable CD or tape player, headphones, book and CD/tape.

Read to self Bags
This is the area that holds our individual books for SSR. We use them as part of our Daily 5 routines. The bags are numbered and decorated, canvas tote bags. Besides holding the books for each individual child, there is also a whisper phone so the children can listen to themselves as they read.
