Gingerbread Exchange

Jolly Gingerbread

We will be doing many exciting things with gingerbread this year. We will be exchanging gingerbread people with classrooms across the country. Each classroom on our list will send us a gingerbread kid that represents their city, state, or community. We will also read different versions of the gingerbread man stories, write stories, make gingerbread houses and many many other exciting activities. At the bottom of the page you will find some of the gingerbread kids that made it to our classroom last year.

Gingerbread Ornaments

These are very fragrant and fairly easy to make. A little messy but that's what adds to the fun! But remember they ARE NOT EDIBLE!
These directions are for making 6 ornaments:
1/2 c. cinnamon
1/2 c. applesauce
2 Tablespoons glue
Mix the previous ingredients together. Roll out onto wax paper. Cut out the shape using a gingerbread cookie cutter. make sure to make a hole on the top with a straw to be able to attach string when they are dry. Let the gingerbread people air dry for 2 days, maybe longer depending upon where you live. When they are dry, add string, yarn or ribbon.

Gingerbread Literature

The following is a list of the books we will be using in class. It is by no means a complete list of gingerbread themed books, only the ones I personally use and/or own.

Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett
The Gingerbread Boy by Paul Galdone
Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett {This is her new book!}
Gingerbread Cowboy by Janet Squires
The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst
The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth
The Gingerbread Man by Eric Kimmel

Gingerbread Houses

We had so much fun making our gingerbread houses. We used our empty, cleaned milk cartons from lunch for the base. We used white frosting to "glue" them to a paper plate. Next we "glued" graham crackers to the sides and roof. The houses were decortated with different candy, marshmellows, sprinkles and of course a gingerbread cookie.
