My name is Katie Lutes and I was born in Fort Lauderdale, FL on February 26,
1986. I have lived in many southern cities. My hometown is Stuart, FL where I
graduated high school in 2004. I graduated high school to attend Stetson
University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Before deciding
my college degree, I have spent my childhood in a school setting because my
mother was a bookkeeper at a Montessori School.
While studying to pursue my degree, I have attained my state certification to
teach K-6 and obtained ESOL endorsement. Before and during my studies of
becoming a teacher, I have participated in multiple classrooms as an assistant
teacher and a lead teacher.
After graduation, I have become a part of the StarChild family for three
years. I have completed my certified hours and attained my CDA. With these
credentials, I am ecstatic to integrate my studies into the classroom by
enhancing the learning of the children though all three learning styles:
visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
In my beliefs about teaching, students should have a hunger for learning and
not feel it is a task to come to school and complete classwork, simply because
it is the rules of the school. By learning the different ways that students
learn: kinesthetic, auditory, or visualization, I can help students feed their
hunger for knowledge. By planning lessons based on the way students will
learn, students will enjoy the lessons they are taught. For example, a student
might feel that a lesson is impossible to understand because as a teacher, one
might be lecturing and the student may learn kinesthetically.
By enhancing students’ understanding of the knowledge being taught, students
will be able to connect the new knowledge with their prior knowledge which
builds authentic learning. When students are taught authentically, they will
take this knowledge with them into the future because they had a way of
connecting their life with a lesson that might otherwise have been hard to
understand. For example, students learning about chemical reactions can be
taught authentically by using household items, and therefore realize how easy
it is to understand the effects of chemicals without learning complicated
definitions.
I believe each student learns differently. All students should believe that
they are unique and should be proud of who they are. By teaching students and
by having students realize their own similarities and differences in the
classroom they will learn that it is alright to be different because
uniqueness is a gift to cherish. By realizing their similarities, the teacher
can benefit by assigning students with similar techniques to help each other
learn better. When students are aware of their learning style, it will
increase their ability to achieve.
