 Course Purpose

   The Music Appreciation Course is designed to introduce students to the study of cultures and historical connections to music.

Course Material

    Online presentations and in-class note taking.

Course Objective (MU.C.1.4)

1.     Students will describe and classify unfamiliar music according to style, period, composer, culture, or performers.

2.     Students will understand the development of American music (e.g., country, blues, folk, stage, or film, and gospel).

3.     Students understand the influence of significant composers and performers on musical styles, traditions, and performance practices.

Class Rules

 These are the rules that you are expected to follow in this class. By signing this paper, you are acknowledging that you have been made aware of these rules and the consequences for breaking them.

Please initial in the appropriate places. This paper is to be returned once it is initialed.  This is the first graded assignment.  It is suggested that you print an extra copy for your records in order to use as a reference if necessary throughout the year.

1. Be prepared for class:

• Be in your seat sitting quietly.

• Have appropriate class materials (includes paper, pen, notebook, and other specified materials).

2. Be respectful to each other and to the teacher.

• Do not raise your voice to anyone, including the teacher.

• There is NO profanity used at any time.

3. There is no eating or drinking in class… except me, or with permission granted by

a doctor’s note provided to the teacher as well as the office.

4. There is no sleeping in class.

5. There is no touching each other or grooming yourself in class.

• No make-up application.

• No hair brushing.

• No public display of affection.

• No public display of aversion.

• No bullying

6. If you are ill, please STAY HOME.

7. Comply with the Student Dress Code at all times.

• No leggings or other extremely tight pants.

• No short shorts or skirts (above mid-thigh).

• Shirts should not display any portion of the midriff or navel.

****Failure to comply with the dress code will result in immediate

removal from the classroom with an accompanying referral.****

Discipline Plan

Discipline within the classroom will be at the teacher’s discretion. All discipline that must be dealt with by administration will be carried out in accordance with the Broward County Discipline Matrix.

Grading Scale

Exam: 40%

Class Discussions: 40%

Homework: 20%

• There are no late grades given for any reason other than an excused absence. An excused absence entitles a student to two school days. Any work turned in after that period of time will not be graded for any reason.

• Projects or research assignments will be graded according to the rubric provided

to the students. Loss of a Project Rubric will result in a grade of zero for that project.
