Classwork/Homework

Week of November 23rd
Have a blessed Thanksgiving!!!
We will be working on an essay on thankfulness.  Requirements for this two day assignment can be found under the files section of this site.
Homework
There is no homework if students complete their work in class.  Numbers 1-9 should be completed on Monday and number 10 (the essay) should be completed on Tuesday.  If students do not complete the work in class, they will need to complete it for homework.

Week of November 16th
We will be continuing our study of "The Pit and the Pendulum".  We will be focusing on base and root words, prefixes and suffixes to help with some of the vocabulary words. Also, we will study the denotation and connotation of several words in the story.
Homework
Monday
- Using what we learned about denotation and connotation, make a list of 5 sets of words that have similar denotations, but different connotations - one positive, one neutral and one negative.  For example thin, svelte and scrawny are all adjectives to describe a person with a slender body.  However, svelte has a positive connotation, thin has a neutral connotation and scrawny has a negative connotation.
Tuesday - Study for "Pit and Pendulum" test.  Study the vocabulary words and the study guide!
Thursday - Pick 5 root words from the prefix, suffix and root word list.  Tell how understanding the meaning of the root word helps you understand the definition of the examples.  I've done one for you.
The root word alter means other.  An alternate choice is  my "other" choice.  An alter ego is my "other" personality.

Week of November 9th
Students will be thrilled that we are taking a two week break from writing.  On Monday, we will review for our test on "The Black Cat" on Tuesday.  For the rest of the week and the beginning of next week, we will study Poe's classic tale "The Pit and the Pendulum".
Homework
Monday - Study for "The Black Cat" test.  Students should have a vocabulary list and a study guide.
Wednesday - "The Pit and the Pendulum" sentences - use each vocabulary word in a sentence that reflects understanding of the definition.
 Update on November 2nd
If your children told you the homework had changed, they were right.  We postponed "The Black Cat" until today.  The vocabulary sentences are due tomorrow.

Extra Credit Opportunity - Grades on "The Tell-Tale Heart" were less than wonderful. Students can make a crossword puzzle using at least 12 of the vocabulary words for "The Black Cat".  Students can earn up to 10 points extra credit on their "The Tell Tale Heart" test.
Week of November 2nd
Normally we write essays on Mondays.  I decided to postpone the essay until Tuesday.  On Monday, we will review everything we've learned so far about organizing essays.  On Tuesday, students will write a persuasive essay.  On Wednesday, we will start Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat".
Homework
Monday - Using your list of homophones, write sentences using 10 sets of homophones.  Three of the ten must be there, their and they're; your and you're, and two, too, and to.  You may choose the other seven.  You may use each set in one sentence or in multiple sentences.  Your homophone list should be glued on page 36 of your notebook (page 40 for Honors).  If you don't have it, you may print it from the Files tab of this site.
