VOCABULARY CARDS INSTRUCTIONS
This year we will be amassing quite a collection of new words. Most weeks,
(usually on Fridays), you will receive a new list of words. Over the weekend,
you need to create an index card for each word so that you can use these
cards to help you study the meanings of the words. You will be quizzed on the
words on the following Friday – on the meaning, not the spelling of the
words.
You will continue to study all your words (old ones and new ones) because
every four weeks or so, there will be a CUMULATIVE quiz; ANY word that has
already been tested on a weekly vocabulary test may show up on a cumulative.
I suggest 10 minutes of vocabulary study each night to prepare for the weekly
quiz and to review old words. Keep your words in a recipe box, shoe box,
baggie, etc. At some point I will ask you to bring your collection to class
so I can see that you are doing your job and making cards each week. This
will be graded as a homework assignment.
FRONT OF THE CARD: Word, part of speech, & picture/symbol to help you
remember what the word means.
BACK OF CARD: Definition & Sentence that hints at meaning of the word.
The goal is to know the words so well that they begin to show up in your
writing and speaking. I want you to write and speak so that you sound as
intelligent as you are! ;)
