2012 AP Language and Composition Summer Reading

Summer Reading assignments were distributed on Tuesday, May 22nd.

Please click on the AP Lang Handouts tab for a copy of the assignment, argument frame, and SOAPStone template.

Search Facebook for “VHS – AP Lang – Summer Reading.” Please “like” our page to receive periodic updates.

In an effort to stay abreast of public discourse and current events, you will read and annotate: (1) ten VARIED current events that have debatable issues and connect to the essential questions listed in the box below (at least one from The Onion and one from Rolling Stone) (2) and ten VARIED columnist editorials (NOT letters to the editor) from reputable newspapers/periodicals with which you can agree, disagree or qualify.

Your articles/editorials MUST demonstrate that you have been reading throughout the summer. Assignments that fail to display two months of reading will earn a minimal score (60%). Affix/glue the columnist articles in the composition book first, then the current event articles. Organize all articles in chronological order; please date each one.

Please visit the following site for direct links to the periodicals: http://delicious.com/biziewskil/periodicals

After reading the article and marking it up:

1) On the left page of your Mead composition book, paste the neatly cut-out article.

2) On the right page, directly opposite the article, SOAPStone the current event in two-column note format; write an argument frame for each editorial (see reverse side). You MUST hand write each SOAPStone and frame in blue or black pen. 3) Please skip a page between articles so the glue doesn’t bleed through. Composition books completed in pencil/word processed will NOT be accepted.
