Parents,

THURSDAY is PJ relaxation day. Students may come in their pajamas and bring a pillow and a blanket. Students have asked if they can bring an electronic device for entertainment such as DS, DSi, PSP, Ipod, Itouch, etc. The ONLY way I will allow them to bring it to school is if I get a SIGNED letter from you saying that you give them permission to bring it to school and that I nor the school are responsible for any loss, theft or damage of said item. Otherwise, please do not send these electronic devices.

For Friday, students can wear shorts and their yellow grade level MGA shirts. Once again LUNCH will NOT be provided by the school nor is it necessary to pack a lunch bag/box.

On Monday, the school week resumes and book bags, agendas, HW folders, pencils is all expected!

Thank you,

Ms. Garcia and Ms. Leoncio

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I  hope you all had a great holiday and a magnificent start to the new year. Warm wishes and giant thank you's for all your holiday cards and gifts. I enjoyed them all!

Thursday, December 09, 2010

1. For GARCIA's HOMEROOM ONLY: The gradebook chair printed the wrong progress reports on Tuesday. The one's I sent home today are the correct ones. Please make sure to sign and return the reports for Grading Period 2! Thx :)

2. AM and PM:  I will not test tomorrow. I will complete a comprehension study guide with the kids for them to take home and finish (if we don't in class) and study for a comprehnsion test that will be given on Monday. Students will not be tested on ALL questions but I will select the test questions from that study guide. They should also study their HW packets for Ch. 1-4, specifically the matching activity(ch.1-2) and Spelling challenge(ch.3 and 4).

I will also be sending home an extra credit assignment to be done using their Social Studies notes for 'Rags and Riches". I will send it home to those needing the extra credit the most.  However it will be available on my homework tab as an option for  those who don't receive a paper copy.

Tuesday, December 07, 2010

Progress Reports will go out tomorrow.

For the students in my PM class ONLY: Progress reports were printed this morning before I could conduct the Vocabulary Retest for my afternoon class. The new grades have been uploaded to the gradebook. Most students improved the 2nd time around and I dropped the original test score. If their retest score remained the same or was lower I kept the original score. I will also, be inputting grades today that will not be reflected in the progress report. I am still grading the Thanksgiving on Thursday Assessment that will be worth 2 grades. I have been grading these in small chunks because it is an overwhelming amount to grade. I really appreciate all of your cooperation and understanding.

If there are any discrepencies with attendance please let me know as well. Simply send an email or note with the date and explanation of discrepency.

I have extended the due date for the book a Ghost Tale for Christmas until Wed. 12/7, we will read the accompanying Research Guide, "Rags to Riches"  before that. You do not need to purchase it, I've ordered a class set.

Monday, November 29, 2010

The next three weeks we will be entering the world of Charles Dickens with "A Christmas Carol". I will read the picture book edition to them this week. Vocabulary words have been pulled from the story. Next week we will begin to read another Magic Tree House book. Their newest series, Magic Tree House® #44: A Ghost Tale for Christmas Time. The students were so engaged when reading Thanksgiving on Thursday that I thought it to be a mistake to not dive into another chapter book. With that said, I ask that you please purchase the book for your child either on Scholastic, under my wish list or another store. At the time the book is only available as a hardcover, so the price is between $8-$12. It is available on Schoalstic for $12 but I'm sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere.

I need all students to have the book in hand by next Monday Dec. 5th. Please be diligent to the due date as it really holds your child back if they don't have the book once we begin reading.

Thank you for all you do. Dont forget to bring in your purchase receipt for the book, I will be giving volunteer hours for this.

Tomorrow 9/24, I will be out all day at a Reading/Writing Workshop. My Teacher Aide, Miss Ruiz will be the substitute. She has been informed of all HW assignments due and classwork assessments that are to be given. Please note that I will be collecting the Story Map, as we have been working on it in class as well as at home.

Today's HW assignment had a small addition which is page 15 (spelling pre-test) in preparation for their weekly spelling test. In addition, they will have a Vocabulary and Comprehension test based on the story "Nate the Great San Francisco Detective" which we reviewed the answers for today. We also reviewed their Language (Grammar) content which was assigned as HW and also reviewed in class in preparation for tomorrow's Language Arts cumulative review.

I saw students were having problems with subject/predicate which I corrected on the HW and reviewed in class. If you are in doubt please see examples below:

Subeject Predicate

My dog has a bone.

She aimed at the basket.

Johnny liked the game of basketball.

The teacher wore red shoes today.

Maria's notebook got all wet!

I hope this clears up any doubts with subject and predicate.

Love you all,
M.Garcia

8/23/10-1st Day of School is quickly approaching and I'm sure everyone is looking forward to the excitement.

Welcome! I'm beyond excited for this school year! I know I will see a lot of familiar faces and hopefully some new ones as well. I can't wait to see you all. This year will be a journey through literature as we will do plenty of reading AND writing. I know, you're probably thinking "Oh No!", but I promise you will enjoy every minute of it!!

Parents, please check the supply/wish list and the Scholastic Book Club links. I'm always in need of good library books or Teacher Resource books so I have a wish list on Scholastic Book Clubs. All purchases towards our classroom library from that wish list or not, will convert to volunteer hours! It's an easy way to complete your hours and help the classroom.

Please stay tuned for more information and updates.
