SELECTION PROCESS
After 2nd quarter grades are posted, the names of 6th and 7th grade students who do not have any disciplinary referrals and who have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.6 will be gathered. Cover letters and infomation packets with student names on them will be placed in boxes of the team leader of students who meet initial eligibility requirements. Team leaders will hand out the packets to students. Students must complete the packets themselves, gathering all the information and signatures needed in a timely fashion. Two personal references are required as well as parent and student signatures. The entire completed packet must be turned in by Monday, February 28th by 4:15 to the box of the advisor, Mrs. Watson. Late or incomplete packets will not be considered. Family members and SMS staff are not permitted to serve as personal references. The Faculty Council will assemble a list of students who completed their packets by the deadline. After 3rd quarter grades are posted,(3rd quarter ends March 30) the list of students completing their paperwork will be checked to be sure these students still meet the grade point average criteria and are free of disciplinary referrals. The Faculty Council then sends forms to the team teachers of qualifiying students asking for teacher feedback. The teacher feedback forms are added to the qualifying student's paperwork. The faculty council then meets to consider each student's information. A majority vote by the Faculty Council determines whether a student is invited to join NJHS. Student names are removed from information so that the information is considered on the completeness and merit of the information, not personal knowledge of the student. A scoring rubric is used to evaluate all the information. A minimum score for eligibility is established before information packets are assessed. The NJHS Advisor is not a voting member of the Faculty Council. Students will be notified in writing by the end of April if they have been selected or not. Selection or non-selection letters will be placed in team leader boxes by the morning of April 30th. Students who have been selected must respond that they are interested in membership and place their response forms in Mrs. Watson's box. Students must attend the Induction Ceremony on May 12 to become a member.
