PE Policies and Procedures

     Dear Parents and Guardians,
The physical education coaches at Sarasota Middle School are looking forward to an active and enjoyable school year.  Our students will be introduced to a wide variety of sports, games, and fitness activities.  To maximize the positive experience for our students, we have created a list of class policies and procedures.  Please read and discuss them with your child.  If you have questions, please email a coach or call S.M.S. at 361-6464.  Coaches email addresses are...

The following policies for physical education have been established to maximize learning, safety, and responsibility for all.

  • Safety is our primary concern.  Any accident or injury must be reported to the physical education coach immediately.
  • Students will be expected to follow all school rules and policies.
  • Students are expected to be on time for class.  Students will officially be marked tardy on the sixth minute of their transition time.
  • Students will dress out for physical education class.  Appropriate attire for class can be a S.M.S. physical education uniform that is sold throughout the school year for $15.00 per set.  Separately sold shirts and shorts are $8.00 each.  A plain white T-shirt and plain black athletic shorts are also acceptable.  Please clearly mark your student's name on their uniform so it can be easily seen.  Physical education uniforms may not be worn outside their physical education class.
  • Proper athletic shoes with laces ties will be worn while participating in physical education class.
  • Caps and/or visors may be worn for outside activities.  Sunglasses are permitted with medical clearance.
  • All medical excuses scripted by a doctor must be turned into the clinic and approved for excused participation.  A written parent excuse will be honored for up to three days.

The following policies for the locker room have been established to maximize learning, safety, and responsibility for all.

  • Each student must only use a S.M.S. issued lock.  Please do not share your lock combination with any student(s).
  • Each student will be assigned an individual locker.  Please do not share lockers with other student(s).
  • Each student must make sure all items are securely locked in their lockers at all times.
  • Only students in the specific physical education class/period will be allowed in the locker room.

The following grading policies have been established to maximize learning, safety, and responsibility for all.

  • 50% Physical Education Objectives.  Students will be evaluated on their mastery of Sarasota County Physical Education Objectives for grade 6 - 8.
  • 40% Participation.  Students will be expected to participate in the planned activity.
  • 10% Warm Ups.  Students will be engaged in instruction and warm ups prior to their activity.

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                            The S.M.S. Physical Education Staff
