FRIDAY 12/18/09
What a terrific group of 6th graders we have this year! I'm very proud to be your teacher! Have a wonderful winter break!
Students were given a Holiday Reading Log to use for optional reading over the break. It a great opportunity for students to continue reading and to make up any reading logs they may have missed. The Holiday Reading Log is also available under the "Resources" icon.
THURSDAY 12/17/09
Gordon Korman, author of Schooled and many other books, visited our school today. 6th graders got to spend an hour with him as he told us about his stories, inspirations for writing, and answered student questions. Our students were terrific! We had an awesome time!

NOTE: Tomorrow we will be watching "The Polar Express" in the afternoon. Students may bring in snacks to eat while we watch the movie.

CW: Today we began reading the story, "Maxx Comedy", written by Gordon Korman. Students began identifying similarities and differences between this story and our book, Schooled, also written by Gordon Korman.

CW: Today students completed their writing prompt practice from yesterday. Also, in preparation for the author's visit on Thursday, we investigated Gordon Korman's website at www.gordonkorman.com to learn about the author, his motivation for writing, and names of other books he's written.

OBJ: To determine the author's purpose when reading a short story.
CW: Today students read the story, "The Fun of It," and autobiography by Amelia Earhart. While reading, they focused on determining the author's purpose of particular passages. Following, some classes were able to watch a video about her.

THURSDAY 12/10/09
OBJ: To write focus a focus statement, main ideas and supporting details to persuade my reader to my point of view.
CW: Today students worked on planning sheets to prepare for our next FCAT persuasive writing prompt.
Students also tie-dyed their shirts today!! Each student was provided with instructions for washing their shirts at home. They included the following:
- Shirts should stay in the ziplock bags for at least 6-8 hours for the dye to set.
- Cut rubber bands if used.
- Fill washer to large load setting with hottest water suitable for fabric and a small amount of laundry soap. Wash and dry separately. Do not allow dyed fabric to rest wet on other items.
- Wear your shirt on Thursday, December 17th for our author's visit!!!

OBJ: To summarize student choice books and compare the main character with the main character in Schooled.
CW: Today students turned in "Schooled Packet" and continued working on Literacy Letter #3. (See 12/4/09.) Students received a Literacy Letter Checklist to use to make sure everything is included. Week 14 Reading Logs were collected and Week 15 Logs were handed out.
HW: Literacy Letter #3 due tomorrow.
REMINDER: Bring in t-shirt for tie-dying. We will be rubber banding them on Wednesday.

MONDAY 12/7/09
OBJ: To assume the point of view of one of the the characters of our book and write a final chapter from his/her perspective.
CW: Today students were asked to write a final paragraph from the point of view of one of the characters from Schooled other than the main character. This will be added to the "Schooled Packet" which is due on Tuesday. Students were given a "Schooled Checklist" to use to make sure they had completed all sections of the packet. The following are included in the packet: Schooled Cover Sheet, 4 pages of storyboards (32 chs), 13 Rain's Wisdoms, 8 character pages (in order), 1 "Favorite Part" picture, and 1 - Ch 32 Write up.

OBJ: To summarize student choice books and compare the main character with the main character in Schooled.
CW: Today students worked on Literacy Letter #3. This letter contains 3 paragraphs. Paragraph 1 is a summary of their own choice book, Paragraph 2 is a comparison between the main character of their book and the main character in Schooled, and Paragraph 3 is a rating of their choice book with an explanation of their rating.
HW: Literacy Letter #2 is due on Wednesday, Dec 9th. Have a great weekend!

OBJ: To identify the main idea of the chapters in our story.
CW: Progress Reports were given out today. The blue cover sheet needs to be signed and returned to first period teachers. Today we finished the book Schooled. We will be completing one more activity on Monday and the "Schooled Packet" is due by next Tuesday.

NOTICE: In celebration of finishing our book and in preparation for the author's visit on Thursday, Dec 17th, we will be tie-dying t-shirts on Thursday, Dec 10th. A letter explaining this was sent home today with Progress Reports. Students need to bring in a t-shirt to tie-dye by Wednesday, Dec 9th.

CW: After using a rubric to check Literacy Letter #2, students wrote a journal entry about their choice books. Paragraph 1 contained a summary of the choice book and paragraph 2 contained an extended write -up of one of the 7 literacy responses (found on the back of the reading logs).

In paragraph 2, they chose one of the sayings from the story, Schooled, and wrote whether they agreed or disagreed and why. Paragraph 3 included a rating of the book from 1-10 and an explanation of why they chose that score.

OBJ: To identify traits in the main character of our story that you relate to.
CW: First, students tallied their 1st quarter reading logs to determine who made their reading goals. Those who did and turned in every reading log (without significant delays) will be invited to attend our "First Annual Reading Ice Cream Party" during lunch tomorrow. After that, students worked on identifying 3 ways in which they could relate to the main character in our story. They then wrote about this in our 2nd paragraph of the literacy letter.

CW: Matthew Henson Quiz. Students received a purple pamphlet that describes the Starbooks book, "Schooled", that we will begin reading on Monday. Students need to get the pamphlet signed by a parent and returned to receive their free book. Students were also given information about next week's Book Fair. The Dolphin Team will have the opportunity to attend on Thursday, October 22nd. Students may bring money to buy books, etc. from the Book Fair. Parents are invited to attend on Tuesday, October 20th. A flyer was also sent home today with that information.

This story's words can be found under "Matthew Henson".

CW: Following DOL, students viewed portions of a video on the life of Matthew Henson, Robert Perry's companion on his expeditions to the North Pole. We are in the process of reading a story about his life. Tomorrow we will meet in the computer lab for FAIR testing (Florida Assessment in Reading) - formerly SRI testing.

TUESDAY 9/22/09
OBJ: Use literary responses to make connections with literature.
CW: Today students turned in Week 4 Reading Logs (green) and received Week 5 Reading Logs (purple). On the back of the reading logs are 7 responses to literature, 4 symbols and 3 connections. For every entry in their reading log, students are to make at least one connection using a literary response. That response needs to be placed in the appropriate box on the reading log. During class, students also began reading the story, "Matthow Henson at the Top of the World."
HW: Read for 20 minutes and record in Week 5 Reading Log along with at least one literary response. Finish pgs 12-19 in the Interactive Reader.

OBJ: Students will edit, rewrite, and illustrate their Autobiography Poems.

OBJ: Students will use descriptive words and phrases to complete an Autobiography Poem.
CW: Today we created sections for LA binders. Students then used descriptive language to write Autobiography Poems after it was first modeled for them.
HW: Finish rough draft of Autobiography Poem
WEDNESDAY 8/26/09
OBJ: Students will understand LA Course Guidelines and learn classroom procedures.
CW: Today we reviewed the LA Course Guidelines and practiced procedures within the classroom. We also finished our "Find Someone Who" Bingo game.
HW: Bring in 5 notebook dividers
TUESDAY 8/25/09
OBJ: Students will understand the rules and procedures of language arts class.
CW: Today students learned about rules and procedures in LA class and played "Find Someone Who" Bingo to become acquainted with their classmates.
HW: Get Language Arts Course Guidelines paper signed and returned.
WEEK 1
MONDAY 8/24/09
OBJ: Students will successfully complete their first day of middle school at SMS!
CW: Today students were introduced to classroom procedures, completed necessary classroom paperwork, and became familiar with the SMS campus.
HW: Return signed parent contact form. Bring in 1 inch binder with dividers.
