1st Quarter
Week 1 - Welcome back! Please take a moment to review the summer
reading requirements so we start the year off right.
Tue, 8/10 - as discussed in class today, there will be a check
test on AQW later this week or first thing next week; you should be
wrapping up your 2nd reading....
Wed, 8/11 - you received your vocabulary assignment today
as well as some notes on how it will be graded; remember: you have 57 words -
work on them a bit each week (we'll have about 3 weeks)
Thu, 8/12 - AQW quiz is Monday - use the weekend to
prepare; vocab Column 1 due Tuesday
Fri, 8/13 - work listed above - we'll have an additional
assignment due on Tuesday, so make sure you're on top of vocab
Week 2
Mon, 8/16 - from our discussion in class, complete the brief
outline and write a paragraph that appropriately responds to the prompt in HO1
(due tomorrow); vocab Column 1 due tomorrow; HO2 due Wednesday (paragraph must
be typed)
Tue, 8/17 - important note: Handout 2 is due Monday, 8/23,
not tomorrow; HO1 rewrite is due Thursday; vocab quizzes are each Friday,
starting this week (one column per week) and vocab assignments are due each
Tuesday
Wed, 8/18 - HO1 rewrite due tomorrow; Vocab Quiz Column 1
Friday; HO2 due Monday; Column 2 words due Tuesday

Week 4
Mon, 8/30 - pay attention because there's a lot going on (and
more may come as we progress through the week):
due Tuesday: Monday's class assignment (Chapter 5),
Vocab Column 3 words/sentences, HO6
due Wednesday: Tuesday's class assignment (Chapter
6), REread through Ch. 9
due Thursday: HO7-8 (character analyses - draft;
final will be due Tuesday, 9-7)
for Friday: vocab quiz 3 --> if you're smart,
you'll have a completed draft which you can ask your peers to review using the
rubrics provided in your notebook
for Tuesday: HO7-8 final (typed, formatted)
Week 5
Tue, 9/7 - you and your partner will submit a single formal
outline for HO11 by the end of class Wednesday
Wed, 9/8 - come to class with a topic in mind for HO12
when class starts tomorrow
Thu, 9/9 - we will work on HO12 today and tomorrow in
class (final, typed copy due Tuesday morning); you should plan to have a fully
completed outline by the end of class tomorrow, which I will gladly look at
and offer advice/suggestions; we'll take a final test over the novel on
Thursday next week
Fri, 9/10 - to be clear: nothing is "due" until Tuesday;
what is due Tuesday is the final essay, typed and formatted correctly
Week 6
Mon, 9/13 - essay due tomorrow; AQW test Thursday; bring
poetry and stories packet tomorrow
Tue, 9/14 - test Thursday; using the Reading Strategy you
received today as a guide, read Saki's story at least two times by Monday;
Friday will be a reading day (either OSR or WWI stories/poems)
Thu, 9/16 - bring an Outside Reading Book tomorrow and/or
your stories/poems packet
Week 7
Mon, 9/20 - read two times each: Arthur Machen, "The
Bowmen" (by Wed) and Ford Madox Ford, "The Scaremonger" (by Thu); bring your
poetry packet every day
Thu, 9/23 - read twice each: Ernest Hemingway's
"Soldier's Home" (look for theme... lost generation) by
Tuesday and Katherine Mansfield's "The Fly" (look for symbolism) by Thursday
Week 8
Tue, 9/28 - see above for hints on this week's readings;
"Soldier's Home" completed already, "The Fly" by Thursday - even though you
won't be here because of your retreat, we'll stay on this schedule (if you
have questions about either reading, ask tomorrow!)
Fri, 10/1 - read AND study two times each: Luigi
Pirandello's "War" (Wed) and Murial Spark's "The First Year of My Life" (Thu):
for "War," consider Wilfred Owen's poem, "Dulce Et Decorum Est" (we'll discuss
it next week) and what the "Old lie" is; for "Life," consider that the author
was born in the year 1918

Week 9 (End of 1st Quarter)
Mon, 10/4 - read Thomas Hardy's poems "The Man He Killed"
(narrative: look for plot elements, note theme, identify two characters) and
"And There Was a Great Calm" (read the handout about the Armistice of 1918) by
Wednesday; also read "War" (Wed) and "The First Year of My Life" (Thu)
Thu, 10/7 - I am not planning a quiz for Tuesday -- I know
you have a full plate already; however, I expect you to have read Faulkner's
story, "Victory" at least once by Tuesday
Fri, 10/8 - the Stories/Poems test is on Wednesday, 10/20
2nd Quarter
Week 10
Tue, 10/12 - if you haven't already (and let's face it: you
haven't) read Faulkner's "Victory"
Fri, 10/15 - test will be Wednesday
Week 11
Mon, 10/18 - ISBN for Their
Eyes Were Watching God: 0-06-093141-8
Thu, 10/21 - bring in the book on Monday or
something else to read - I have to figure out how to approach this unit
without access to many of my files...
Week 12
Mon, 10/25 - once more... bring TEWWG (ISBN:
0-06-093141-8) EVRY DAY!
Wed, 10/27 - we'll take a check test on TEWWG soon
Fri, 10/29 - check test will be Mon, 11/8
Week 13
Mon, 11/1 - there will be a check test on TEWWG and a
quick quiz on introductory material for Harlem Renaissance - changed to

Week 14
Mon, 11/8 - read the seven poems by Langston
Hughes and determine which of the three major themes we discussed can apply
(can be more than one) - identify them by more than just "A, B, or C"; don't
forget the TEWWG check test on Wednesday
Wed, 11/10 - read the remaining poems and the article
"Race Pride" and assign the appropriate theme or themes
Fri, 11/12 - review the packet starting with Document 2-M
and look at the HR art; determine (as best you can) which theme or themes apply
Week 15
Mon, 11/15 - first vocabulary quiz is Friday (Column 1 words);
there will be a test on poems and art of the Harlem Renaissance next week -
either Monday or Tuesday
Fri, 11/19 - poems, art, & themes test Monday; paragraph
assignment for Ch. 1 due Tuesday; read through Ch. 4 by Tuesday
Week 16
Mon, 11/22 - TYPED paragraph for Ch. 1 (symbol and theme) due

Folktales," "Tales about Beginnings," and "How the Earth was Made" (Cheyenne
creation story)
Wed, 1/5 - read the cosmogonies and complete the motifs
chart; the light homework load (so far) comes with the implicit (now explicit)
understanding that you're reading The Hobbit in preparation for a check
test on Wednesday before we leave for Disney (19th)
