THE LEARNING PAD

“LEARNING BY LEAPS IN BOUNDS”

(REVISED DECEMBER 4, 2007)

THIS SECTION IS DESIGNED TO ACQUAINT PARENTS WITH THE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES IN THE LEARNING PAD THAT ARE VITAL TO MAINTAINING A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR. THE INFORMATION ONLY PERTAINS TO STUDENTS IN MS. WILSON’S ROOM.

THE ENVIORMENT

This year my third graders will be participating in an adaptive micro-society. Your child will learn many financial and life lessons as well as become more accountable for his or her actions. The students will run the classroom as a local community. The students will be assigned weekly jobs as mayor, sheriff, fire chief, veterinary, banker, and council members. Your child will be given multiple opportunities to playing an active role in the classroom as a citizen within our community of Frogville.  Students will be fine and charged simple fees for a variety of situations that occur in the classroom by using a class economy system. Students will also be rewarded for their contributions to the community.

EXPECTATIONS

My ultimate goal is to produce motivated, happy, self-sufficient learner.  I want your child to experience success and to be challenged by reaching his or her academic potential and achieve mastery of the key concepts and skills she or he will need to succeed in life.
The major task in third grade
is learning to organize and study. It will be important that you play a significant role in helping your child learn these skills.  Especially in the early part of the year, many students will have little experience with studying, time management, and materials management.  Students do not automatically know what “study for your test” means. Although I will share step by step with your child strategies he or she can use to study, it will be necessary for you to reinforce and enhance these techniques with your child.  It will require a lot of calling out material to him or her, helping them repeat information until it’s learned, etc.  I ask that you take an active role in participating in studying with your child for tests.  Once they have learned the basic techniques, it will be easier to allow him or her to study on his or her own, depending on the child, but do not assume that “I studied” translates into “I know the material” –always test them at home.  In the event that your child has problems, I will offer opportunities for him or her to attend tutorial sessions after school as well as provide one on one review of concepts/skills she or he are having difficulties grasping.  I will also send home remedial assignments for your child to complete at home.

CLASSROOM VISITATION/VOLUNTEERS

Parents are always welcome to visit and volunteer their time in the classroom. We would like for you to be a member of our community in order to help make our school year a success. If you would like to assist in classroom activities or demonstrate a hobby or a topic of interest, please complete on the classroom volunteer form.  For the protection of our students, faculty, and staff of Blanchard Elementary, all parents and visitors must report directly to the office, sign in, and receive a visitor's pass before coming in the classroom. You are also welcome to join your child for lunch. The price of lunch for an adult is $3.50.  We eat lunch from12:05 to 12:35.

COMMUNICATIONS

The web page and notebook designed to serve as a multipurpose tool of communicating daily to you as a parent and as a resource for your child as well as you. The web page can be access two ways. It can be access through the school website. The address is blanchard.mcsdga..net. Do not type in “www” to access this page. Then click on “faculty” located on the left. Next, locate “Third Grade” and click on “Wilson”. You can also access it from www.teacherweb.com.  You will be asked to select the state, school and teacher from a pull down bar.  The web page contains homework and spelling words for the week. It will also have an updated calendar and announcements to keep you inform with upcoming events and pertinent information that are vital in the community as well as in the school.

The Notebook is divided into five sections- a pouch, communication, conduct, homework, and resources. Each section is color-coded.  All information and or documentations for each section will be printed on a particular colored paper.  Each section contains essential information/ materials that may require your immediate attention and/or documentation /activities for your child or you to complete.  The pouch will house pencils, and other supplies your child may need in school and at home on a regular bases. I recommend that the students leave 2 to 3 pencils, a glue stick, pair of scissors inside of the pouch so she or he will have all materials available for him or her to complete homework within the binder.

The communication section will house three components- communicator, a parent- teacher correspondence, Absences forms, and newsletters.  The communicator component will house your child’s graded assignments, memorandums, PTA information and other vital school or district information. Please make it a habit of asking your child to check his or her communicator daily. This way, your child will get in the habit of forwarding all graded papers, memorandums, and forms to you.  The communicator will have all of your child’s assignments from the previous week or two.  Weekly graded assignments and activities will be placed inside of your child’s communicator at least every other week.  It will also have a communication/grade sheet for you to sign. The communication/grade sheet will be housed inside of a sheet protector. The sheet communicates conduct, subject areas, and work habits your child needs to improvement in. It also provides a section for you and I to communicate on your child’s progress. Please sign the sheet, initial all graded sheets, and return the communication/grade sheet along with the stapled pack of graded assignments the next school day. If you fail to return all graded papers, I will be unable to forward your child’s remaining paper until the previous pack is initialed and returned. However, you will be more than welcome to come in a review the pack. When you send money to school, please put it in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name, my name, the purpose of the money, and place it in the communicator.  If your student brings money to school without a note or envelope explaining it purpose, I will return it back inside the communicator. This procedure protects your child from any misunderstandings. The parent- teacher correspondence component will allow you to communicate daily or as needed on concerns, questions, and problems. I will also use it with questions and concerns that I may have. Whenever I write a note to you, I will place the sheet inside of your child’s communicator (envelope). This way, your child will remove the sheet once he or she get home and forward the sheet to you.  I would like for you to do the same.  If you have any questions, concerns or information that need to be returned, please place it in your child’s communicator.  Each morning your child is responsible for checking and removing any papers from the communicator. I have also enclosed two absence forms for you to utilize when you child is absent.  Please complete the form and place it in your child’s communicator envelope. According the Muscogee County School District policy, you have 3 days to send in a note stating the nature of the absence. A student is only allowed to make-up assignments when the absence is excusable. For more information on absences, please refer to the Student Behavior Code and Discipline Policy Handbook sent home in August. The newsletter component is design to provide information on what is happening in the classroom and the school as well as the weekly objectives for each subject area.  The newsletter will be placed in your child’s communication. Once you have read the newsletter, please place it in the newsletter component of the notebook.

The conduct section will house a copy of the conduct policy for you to reference and a transaction sheet noting the number and amount of withdrawals within a week as well as your child conduct grade for the week. Once your child looses conduct money, she or he will complete a withdrawal form for you to sign. The withdrawal form will be sent home inside of the communicator daily.

Homework section will house your child’s assignment book, homework pocket and reading log. Your child will be responsible for writing his or her assignments in the assignment book correctly. Your child will be given time to record the homework assignment in class. Your child must obtain your initial each night. Your initial signifies that you were aware that your child had homework. It will be beneficial to your child if you verify all assignments have been completed each night and remind him or her to place the assignments back inside of the homework pocket before going to bed. This will ensure that your child materials would be more likely returned the next school day. I would also advise you to have your child pack his or her book bag before bed and place it by the door so that it can be grabbed on the way out in the morning.  The homework pocket will house all homework assignments for the day.  The reading log will have your child reading log form. Your child must document nightly minutes, pages, and write a brief summary over the book she or he read. You must initial this form as well.

The Resource section will house an array of information/ resources for your child to utilize. It will also serve as a reference area for concepts and skills reviewed.

It is vital that you assist your child in keeping the notebook organized.  Please closely monitor the notebook organization and homework routines for the first grading period, then it should become a habit for your child and you will have to spend less time on it later.   If your child fails to turn in materials/or have a note signed, s/he will receive a letter addressing the missing material(s). Please sign the missing material form and return the form along with the missing material(s) the next school day. If the missing material form is not return and/or sign, a phone call will be placed to the parent requesting for item(s) and form.

CLASSROOM DONATIONS

We will have many cooking experiments throughout the school year along with celebrations. We would greatly appreciate any items such as paper plates, napkins, cups, plastic fork/spoons donated to our class. I also asked that you help with cooking items. These cooking activities will provide a natural and exciting way for your child to practice reading skills by following directions and math skills by utilizing measurement and fraction skills. If you are willing to help with classroom donations please complete the helping in the classroom form.

You are welcome to come and bring treats to celebrate your child's birthday with his/her classmates. If you cannot come but wish to send treats, please send treats that are easy to distribute (i.e.- packaged drinks versus drinks that need to be pour into cups, cupcakes versus a cake to cut, ice-cream cups instead of ice-cream to dip, etc.) Please notify me in advance (24hours) if you wish to celebrate your child's day with his/her classmates. We will be happy to celebrate your child’s day, but it must be quick and easy.

PARENT CONFERENCES

You may be required to attend parent -teacher conferences through-out the school year to discuss some concerns that may arise about your child's academic, emotional, and social growth. When a conference is required, a conference letter will be sent to you inside of your child’s notebook.  It will state the nature of the conference along with a date and time for your conference.  You are asked to complete the bottom portion of the letter agreeing to the date and time of the conference or providing a suggested date and time frame that is more suitable to your schedule.

If you desire to schedule a conference concerning your child, please call the office or write a letter in the communication section of your child’s notebook.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Your child will be assigned homework Monday through Thursday. Homework assignments for each night will be written inside your child’s assignment book in the homework section of the notebook. It is your child responsiblity to write down his or her  homework assignments daily in class. The students are given 5-10 minutes of quiet time to write down all assignments. I will make every effort to record assignment on the webpage. But please be aware that if I am absent or on the website. Your child will be responsible for writing all his or her assignments in his or her assignment book as well as placing all homework assignment sheets in the homework pocket. Your child will be required to read nightly to include the weekend.

Homework gives your child an opportunity to review/practice skills learned during the week. All assignments are due back the next school day. Make sure that all assignments are completed and returned inside of the homework section of the notebook daily. It is your child’s responsibility to turn in all of his or her homework assignments prior to 9:00.  Failure to turn in homework assignment on time will result in a withdrawal of $1.00 per assignment.  Failure to turn in homework or complete homework will result in a withdrawal of $3.00 per assignment and a zero in each discipline area. Failure to complete homework assignments for 3 or more days within a week will result in detention.  Please initial the bottom of the assignment sheet nightly stating that you are aware of the assignments and have checked to ensure that your child has completed his/her assignments. Homework counts as 10% of your child’s grade.

MYSTERY READERS

I would like to invite any parents, older siblings, grandparents, relatives, or other special people to surprise your child by being a “Mystery Reader” this year in our classroom.  Students LOVE having their family, friends, and relatives visit our classroom to share in our learning by reading a favorite story aloud to our class.  Mystery Readers will visit us on Fridays at 2:30 p.m. each week.  Readers are asked to bring a book to read or read a teacher-chosen book from our classroom library.

If you can find a date that works for you, please sign up to be a Mystery Reader for the 2007-2008 school year!  There are many open dates to choose from throughout the year.

Included with this note is a list of dates that are available.

Please indicate at least two dates (if possible) that will work for you so that I can accommodate the most people. You can either email me your preferred dates or send your top three choices in a “top secret” envelope to school with your child.  I will get back to you as soon as I can to confirm your official Mystery Reader date.

I have also created a Mystery Reader sign-up book that will be kept in my classroom throughout the year.  If you would prefer to just come to the classroom and pick your date, feel free to do that instead.  Remember, you are a mystery to the class, so try not to tell your child when you will be coming!

Please see me or drop me a “secret” note if you have any further questions.  We can’t wait to meet our 2007-2008 Mystery Readers!

5 dollars will be deducted from students who fail to:

The Classroom Economy system will be utilized to determine a student’s weekly conduct and grading period averages.  Parents are required to initial the weekly conduct account sheet daily. A mini-store as well as store will be set up so students can purchase items with their earned money. The mini store will be open sporadically during each month as a reward for students who have maintained $90 or more and $18 or more each day.  The store will be open only at the end of each grading period.  Students must have an average of $80 dollars a week and no office referrals in order to shop the store. If students fail to maintain $70 or more a week, she or he will be required to appear in Conduct Court to write an action plan.
