How do I make a referral for a speech evaluation for my preschool-age child?

Preschool speech services are provided for students ages 3-5 who
meet eligibility criteria for a speech/language impairment.
Eligibility is determined following a speech and language
evaluation by a speech-language pathologist in the Cobb County
School District. To make a referral, you must call the Cobb
County School District
Central Office at (770) 426-3331. They will mail you a packet
that you must complete and return before an evaluation is
scheduled. Before your child is evaluated, he/she must have a
vision and hearing screening.

Where can I have my child's hearing tested.

You can call Cobb County's Audiology Department at (678) 581-7400
to schedule a hearing test. This service is free of charge for
children residing within the Cobb County School District. The
health department or your child's pediatrician may also provide
this service.

What can I do to improve my child's speech and language?

1. Sit on the floor or get out and play with your child.
Exploration and interaction through play is the way small
children learn.
2. Reading with your child is critical to enhancing speech and
language, and encouraging print awareness. Reading is the best
way to improve your child's vocabulary.
3. Involve your child in daily routines- cooking, cleaning,
shopping, etc. Seemingly mundane activities can help your child
learn valuable sequencing, categorization, and even early math
skills. A trip to the grocery store or farmers' market can be as
enriching for a child as a day at the museum!
