Recorder Ensemble

IMPORTANT DATES ARE POSTED ON THE "CALENDAR" LINK ON THE HOME PAGE.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Recorder Ensemble is an extension activity that Mrs. Grayburn voluntarily offers for the fifth grade students at Cheatham Hill Elementary School. Why does Mrs. Grayburn offer this program? Research says:
  • Music enhances the process of learning. The systems they nourish, which include our integrated sensory, attention, cognitive, emotional and motor capacities, are shown to be the driving forces behind all other learning. (Konrad, R. R., Empathy, Arts and Social Studies, 2000)
  • Students who were exposed to music-based lessons scored a full 100% higher on fractions tests than those who learned in the conventional manner. (Neurological Research, March 15, 1999)
  • The world's top academic countries place a high value on music education. Hungary, Netherlands, and Japan have required music training at the elementary and middle school levels, both instrumental and vocal, for several decades. (1988 International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IAEEA) Test)
  • With music in schools, students connect to each other better - greater camaraderie, fewer fights, less racism and reduced use of hurtful sarcasm. (Eric Jensen, Arts With the Brain in Mind, 2001)
May 6, 2012
I just received an e-mail from the Hillgrove High School Band videographer.  He recorded our performance at Taste of West Cobb on Saturday, April 14th and has shared the link with me.
Go to the following link to enjoy our performance!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

April 12, 2012

This morning Mr. Nichols, the band director from Smitha Middle School came to our Recorder Ensemble rehearsal.  He wanted to see some of the things we do here at Cheatham Hill.  He was very impressed with the Recorder Ensemble!  He told the students that this morning he was dragging and not too peppy.  But after hearing our recorders, he felt energized and ready for his day.  He was so impressed that he went to his car to get his iPad to record their playing!

Tomorrow morning is our final Recorder Ensemble rehearsal.  I have thoroughly enjoyed this group.  They are such a great group of students, wonderful musicians, and so enthusiastic about everything we do.  I am really looking forward to their performance on Saturday morning.  Several students have written introductions for the songs.  And a group of students created some choreography for one of the songs.  I am going to miss them.

OK - on to the details for Saturday morning.  Our performance time is 11:15.  I know some of the students have other places to go after our performance, so if we can begin earlier, we may do so.  Please arrive at the Avenues of West Cobb (on Dallas Highway) at 10:45.  We will need to organize ourselves and be ready to go as soon as we can.

Students should wear their Recorder Ensemble T-shirt with jeans (blue jean capri pants or long shorts would also be ok, depending on the weather).  Please make sure they have their recorder and music before you leave home.  I will have them put their recorders and music into their backpacks as soon as we are done practicing in the morning to make sure they don't leave them here at school.  But you may want to check with them when they get home on Friday in case you need to make an emergency run back to the school...

Taste of West Cobb is a fun event with lots of food vendors.  A pack of tickets is $20.  The first year I went I thought $20 of tickets would not go very far.  But I ended up going home with extra tickets, and that included feeding my family.

Just a gentle reminder...this event has been on our calendar since October.  Several students have special parts, including speaking parts as well as special instrumental parts.  Thank you very much to the parents who have arranged their busy day to be at our performance.  At this late date it would not be right to ask someone else to step in.  Thank you for your understanding.

Today, the music teachers from Lovinggood came to speak to the students who will be going to Lovinggood about being in band, orchestra, and chorus next year.  Also, Mr. Nichols from Smitha spoke with the Smitha students about band, orchestra, and chorus opportunities at Smitha.  Pine Mountain usually speaks with the students in the fall.  Please take this opportunity to talk with your child about their choices for next year.  For students going to Lovinggood there is a meeting for parents (and students) about band, orchestra, and chorus on Monday evening (4/16) at 7:00 PM in the cafeteria at Lovinggood.

See you Saturday!  (The weather report is calling for a beautiful day!)

UPDATE:  A student just asked where at the Avenues we will be meeting.  Although I think you will probably be able to find the event very easily, his question made me think that a bit of direction would probably be helpful!

The event takes place outside in that parking lot between the Macaroni Grill/Ted's Montana Grill area and Dallas Highway.  When you enter the Avenues of West Cobb through the main entrance, we will be on the right of the entrance.  I'm pretty sure you will NOT be able to park there, though.  However, there will be people directing you to where you can and can't go.  The "Entertainment Staging Area" is where we will meet and is on the Aspens side of the event space.  That is where we will meet.  See you at 10:45!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
March 22, 2012
Recorder Ensemble will meet in the morning (Friday) at 7:30 in the Music Room.  See everyone then!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

March 16, 2012

I hope everyone got the message about needing to cancel today's Recorder Ensemble rehearsal.  I probably will not be back at school on Monday for Mondays rehearsal.  Please be watching for information about when we will meet again to practice.  In the meantime, everyone should be practicing specific areas on Grand Old Flag, as well as all of In the Hall of the Mountain King.

I hope to be back soon!

March 9, 2012

I was so pleased with last night's performance at the Art Show!  I have received a lot of compliments from a variety of people.  Kudos to the Recorder Ensemble!  And thank you to the parents, families, and friends who supported us in the audience, as well as arranged their schedules to get their recorder player there.

We took this morning off for rehearsal, but we will be back at it on Monday morning, preparing for our performance at Taste of West Cobb on Saturday morning, April 14th at 11:15 AM.  In addition to the songs we played last night, we will be adding "In the Hall of the Mountain King".  It is a challenging piece of music.  However, I'm sure you will not be surprised to hear that the students are taking on the challenge and have already learned a lot of it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
March 7, 2012
Tomorrow evening the Recorder Ensemble is performing at the Cheatham Hill Art Show.  Recorder Ensemble members should report to the music room at 5:40.  They should wear their Recorder Ensemble T-shirt and blue jeans.  We will be performing at 6:00.  Our performance should be about 15 minutes long.
I am so very proud of the Recorder Ensemble.  They are working VERY hard and sound WONDERFUL!  I've had several teachers stop by to listen to them during practices.  As a group, this is the best group of music readers I have had (and I have had some great music reading groups before, so that is saying a lot!).  I think you will be very proud of them tomorrow night.
See you then!
PS Please remember our performance at Taste of West Cobb on Saturday morning, April 14th.  You will report to the Avenues of West Cobb at 10:50 AM.  Our performance will be at 11:15 and should last about 20 minutes.  More information to come!
February 10, 2012
URGENT, URGENT, URGENT!  Cristi Kent is putting together pages for the yearbook for music.  She has one picture of the Recorder Ensemble performing but is in need of some more pictures.  She needs them by tomorrow (Saturday) so she can do the layout on Sunday.  The pages must go to the publisher on Monday.  If you have any performance pictures of the Recorder Ensemble (Taste of Lovinggood, Dessert Theater, Christmas on Peachtree or our assembly for the school) please send them to her e-mail by tomorrow (Saturday, 2/11).  Her e-mail address is cristifk@bellsouth.net.  I know the students would enjoy seeing themselves in the yearbook!  Thank you!
The Recorder Ensemble has received new music.  Everyone should have it as of today.  I had an informational meeting with the Recorder Ensemble this morning.  Their rehearsal recordings are on the practice link of this webpage.  They are password protected.  I gave the students the password this morning.  If for some reason your child does not have it, please e-mail me that you need the password and I will send it on.  If accessing the recordings is an issue for your child, please let me know so I can make a CD for them.  By having the music available on my webpage, it allows me to add music, something that I could not do if I burned CD's for everyone.  To add music I would have to make new CD's.  I am hopeful this will work well.
Recorder Ensemble will practice on Monday morning (2/13) at 7:30 in the music room.
Our next performance is Thursday night, March 8th at Cheatham Hill for the Annual Art Show.  We will be performing at 6:00.  We will meet in the music room at 5:40.  Students should wear their Recorder Ensemble T-shirt and jeans for this performance.
Be sure you also have Taste of West Cobb on your calendar.  We will be performing at the Avenues of West Cobb on Saturday morning, April 14th.  We will perform about 11:00ish, but definite performance times have not yet been sent out.  When we have a definite time, I will pass it along to you.
December 19, 2011
Our field trip is tomorrow morning!  We will leave Cheatham Hill at 9:30.  PLEASE REMEMBER:  we will be returning to Cheatham Hill at 3:30.  Your child will have to be picked up or sent to ASP.
The students have made their lunch selections for the trip - either bring a lunch from home, buy one from school, or bring money ($5-$10 suggested) to purchase lunch there.
  • If your child does not have a pocket in their performance outfit, please put their money in a zip lock baggie with their name on the bag so the chaperone can hold it for them until lunchtime.
  • If your child is bringing a lunch from home, please make sure that everything is disposable - no lunch boxes, silverware, drink bottles, etc. that will need to be returned home, as it will be very difficult for everyone to keep up with it while participating in the activities.
  • Any child who comes to school without a lunch from home or money to purchase lunch will need to get a sack lunch from school.
Our formal performance outfit is what we will wear for the trip (white/navy - just like we had for Dessert Theater).  Students need to wear this to school in the morning.  They will get their bow tie when they arrive at school.
We have 12 chaperones coming with us (thank you so much for volunteering your time!), so students will be in groups of approximately 9 students.  If parents want to join us for the day, depending on how many parents choose to do this, admission is $12 ($8 if we have ten or more).  This does not include our chaperone count.  You will need to purchase your tickets at the same time, which would be when we first arrive.
We will be performing for the school on Wednesday morning.  We will have two assemblies.  Students should wear their purple shirt with blue jeans.  If your child is in both chorus and recorder ensemble, they can choose which shirt they would like to wear.
December 13, 2011
I am sending a hard copy of the following information home today with each chorus and recorder ensemble member.  Please check with you child to make sure you see it, as there is a lunch form that needs to be completed for our field trip, as well as a permission slip for the Recorder Ensemble (chorus has already turned in the permission slip).  This permission slip is for the school, not the one everyone had to complete for the venue for our trip.  Both of these forms are also available on the "forms and other documents to download" link on this website.  Also included are payment envelopes for anyone who still owes money for chorus and/or recorder ensemble.  We really need to collect all monies before the holidays.
Sent home today:
Updates for Chorus and Recorder Ensemble
December 13, 2011
 ARE YOU GETTING MY E-MAILS?
     I have decided to publish this update, even though this information is available on my TeacherWeb page.  Each time I update my TeacherWeb page, it generates an e-mail to the address or addresses you have submitted.  This year I am feeling as though this information is not being received, because of the number of repeated questions I am receiving.  If you are not receiving my updates, please go to my webpage, select either chorus or recorder ensemble, go to the bottom of the page, and click on the subscribe to newsflash button.  You will be prompted to enter your e-mail or phone information.  And if ever you need information about chorus or recorder ensemble, you can just go to my webpage, as I don’t remove information from the updates.  You can access my webpage by going to the Cheatham Hill page and clicking on Music.  Future updates will be sent via a NewsFlash on my TeacherWeb page.
 FIELD TRIP ON DECEMBER 20TH
     We are going on our field trip to Christmas on Peachtree (formerly known as Festival of Trees) next Tuesday (December 20th). We are leaving at 9:30 and will not return until 3:30, which is after dismissal.  Parents should plan to pick up at 3:30.  Students who are not picked up by 3:40 will be checked into ASP for a $7 charge (and a $10 registration charge if your child has not been in ASP yet this year).  Of course, students who are to go to ASP will be checked into ASP upon our return.
     Chorus and Recorder Ensemble members should wear their formal performance outfit  (navy/white – just like what they wore for Dessert Theater) to school on the 20th.
     You will find a lunch form attached.  I need these returned by Thursday (12/15) so we will know how many school lunches may be needed for our trip.  Students will be given the option to purchase their lunch while we are on the trip.  At this moment, I don’t know exactly what kinds of food will be available (I have heard Chic-Fil-A is there) so I am making a suggestion of $10, just to be sure.
     UPDATE:  I just got word from the venue about lunch:  As for what's availanle, we have Chik-Fil-A, Nathan's Hot Dogs, and Rising Roll, so figure cost will be between $5. - $10., we also have some other adult type foods available, but that starts at $7.00, not including drinks.
     Parents are invited to chaperone.  However, there will be a charge for your entry (chorus and recorder ensemble get in free).  If we have ten or more parents, the charge is $8.  Chaperones will be given a group of students for the day, so we will need for you to stay with us for the whole trip.  You can purchase your tickets at the window, but they need to be purchased as a group.  If you are interested in going on this fun trip with us, please send me an e-mail.
PERMISSION SLIPS FOR RECORDER ENSEMBLE
     Everyone going on this trip has already completed a release for the venue.  These have already been sent ahead.  Students will only be allowed to enter if they have a release on file (and they will take role!).  However, Recorder Ensemble does not have signed permission slips for the school (chorus already has signed permission slips).  Please sign the form and return it to school by Thursday (12/15).  Students who don’t have a signed permission slip will not be allowed to leave school for the trip.  If you need another copy of the permission slip, you can download one from the “forms and other documents to download” link on my webpage.
CHORUS AND RECORDER ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM FOR SCHOOL
     The day after our trip (Wednesday, 12/21), we will be presenting an assembly for the school.  Students should wear their purple shirts and jeans to school (if your child is in both groups, they can choose which shirt they will wear).  Santa hats, elf hats, or reindeer antlers are optional.
 GENTLE REMINDER
     Chorus and Recorder Ensemble is a fee-based activity.  We have already spent money for these programs, which already has included our T-shirts, Dessert Theater, music, and our field trip, just to mention a few.  If you have a balance, you are receiving a payment envelope.  Your prompt attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.  If you believe you have already paid and are being asked to pay again, please let me know so I can check with our bookkeeper.  Thank you.
December 9, 2011
In honor of work very well done at Dessert Theater, the recorder ensemble will take Monday off.  There will be no chorus rehearsal on Monday (12/12) morning.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to EVERYONE who made Dessert Theater a great success!  Our custodians have asked that we especially thank the families that helped return the tables to the classrooms.  This really helped them out a lot!
Please remember to e-mail me if you are interested in going with us on our field trip to Christmas on Peachtree on Tuesday, December 20th.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

December 5, 2011

I have been getting a lot of questions from students about Dessert Theater.  PLEASE read this information very carefully so everyone will know what is going on.

Tomorrow night is Dessert Theater at Cheatham Hill Elementary School.
  • Doors open at 6:30 pm for families to come fill their plates with desserts and get settled for the program, which will begin at 7:00 pm.
  • Chorus and Recorder Ensemble members should report to the gym at 6:40 pm in their FORMAL performance outfit (please see above).
  • All of the reserved tables have been purchased.  However, THERE WILL BE FREE SEATING AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE ELSE.
  • Each family should provide a dessert for the dessert table and should be brought to school in the morning.  Beverages and paper products are provided.  However, if your dessert requires a fork or spoon, please provide them.
Decorating for Dessert Theater will begin tomorrow afternoon at 2:15.  I am very concerned because I have heard from very, very few about volunteering to help decorate tomorrow.  Without volunteers to help decorate, we will not be ready for our program tomorrow evening.  We are also in need of pine and holly branches for decorating.  If you can provide pine or holly sprigs and/or can help decorate, please e-mail me to let me know you will be there.

The chorus and recorder ensemble will be performing one song together at Dessert Theater.  We will have a practice tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM in the lunchroom.

Thank you!

November 28, 2011

I know this is the second message for today, but our T-shirts have arrived so we WILL be able to have our picture taken for the yearbook in the morning!  I told the students today to wear blue jeans to school, just in case the shirts came.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
November 28, 2011
I have been VERY proud of the work the students in the recorder ensemble have been doing!  It is really obvious that most of them have put a lot of time and effort into learning their music.  I hope you have been hearing the sounds of Christmas ringing through your house!  It's hard to believe that Dessert Theater is just one week away!
This morning I gave all recorder ensemble members a form for our field trip that MUST be completed and returned FIRST THING IN THE MORNING.  The Christmas on Peachtree organization requires these forms be completed and returned to them ASAP.  It is my understanding that they will create a roster from these forms and will only allow students to enter the venue if they have a signed release in their possession.  If you can't find the form I gave them this morning, I have also put the form on the "Forms and other documents to download" link on this website.  If you download one, for the organization line, please write "Cheatham Hill Elementary 5th Grade Recorder Ensemble."  If your child is in recorder ensemble AND chorus, I need a separate form for each, so please make sure you have signed two forms.
Table reservations for Dessert Theater are going fast.  With only two days of receiving reservations and more than half of the tables are gone.  If you are interested in reserving a table, please download the reservation form from the "Forms and other documents to download" link on this website.  First come, first served.  Please note that there will be seating for ALL guests, but the tables down front are by reservation only.
Please remember that we are practicing each morning this week at 7:25 AM.  The recorder ensemble will also gather at 7:30 Tuesday morning in the lunchroom to practice the song they will be performing with the chorus.
Our first performance is THIS Friday evening for "A Taste of Lovinggood" at Lovinggood Middle School.  You will recall this date was on the recorder ensemble invitation letter that was sent home when your child was invited to participate in recorder ensemble.  As stated in my last newsflash (below), we are performing at 6:30 PM on Friday night.  We have been asked to report to the Lovinggood band room at 6:10.  We will be wearing our recorder ensemble T-shirts (yet to arrive) with nice blue jeans and sneakers.  Also, each recorder ensemble member should have a Santa hat, reindeer antlers, or an elf hat for this performance.  I will have a few Santa hats if anyone needs one.  Your child will need to bring his/her recorder and music to the performance.
Each family is asked to provide a dessert for the dessert buffet for Dessert Theater.  Desserts should be brought in Tuesday morning.  Beverages and paper products will be provided.  However, if your dessert requires an eating utensil (fork, spoon) we ask that you please provide them.  Be sure your name is on any plate or other container so you will be sure to get it back.
We will be decorating the lunchroom for Dessert Theater at 2:15 on Tuesday afternoon.  We are looking for volunteers to help us decorate.  If you can help, PLEASE send me an e-mail to let me know you can help.  Many hands make light work!  We will also need some pine and holly branches for decorating.  If you can donate these items, please let me know.
Dessert Theater will begin at 7:00 PM on Tuesday evening, December 6th.  Doors will open at 6:30 PM for families to begin going through the dessert line.  Recorder Ensemble and Chorus members will meet in the gym at 6:40 PM.
Our road trip to Christmas on Peachtree is Tuesday, December 20th.  We will leave school at 9:30 and will not be back until 3:30.  We will eat lunch while we are there.  Students will have the option to bring money to buy lunch while we are there or to bring a lunch from home or school.  We are still looking for parents who would like to come with us on this field trip.  If you are interested, please let me know.  There will probably be a charge for your admission, but it will be a discounted price.  I am waiting for the packet of information to arrive that should include the cost.
November 17, 2011
Happy Thanksgiving to each and everyone of you!  I am thankful that you have allowed your child the opportunity to participate in recorder ensemble this year!
Just a few updates and reminders:
After Thanksgiving we will have morning rehearsals Monday-Friday, November 28-December 2.  Students should check in at homeroom before coming to rehearsal.  Rehearsals will begin at 7:25 AM.
Our first performance is at Taste of Lovinggood on Friday evening, December 2nd.  We will be performing at 6:30 PM in the Lovinggood auditorium.  We have been asked to report to the band room at 6:10 PM.  Recorder Ensemble members will wear their Recorder Ensemble shirts (tucked in) with nice jeans (no holes and no very obvious adornments) and a belt.  Santa hats, reindeer antlers, or elf hats should also be worn.  I have a limited supply of Santa hats that can be worn, if necessary.
Dessert Theater is Tuesday evening, December 6th at the school.  We will wear our formal performance outfits for this performance (see above).  Each family is asked to provide a dessert for the dessert buffet table.  Beverages and paper products will be supplied.  Dessert Theater begins at 7:00 PM but the doors will open at 6:30 for families to get their treats and settle in for a fun evening of holiday music.
In the "Forms and Other Documents to Download" link on this webpage you can download a reservation form for reserving a table at Dessert Theater.  There are a limited number of reserved tables.  Tables are reserved as whole tables (seating or 8) for $25.  Payments will be accepted as long as table space is available.  Please read the directions on the form very carefully.  Forms will also be given out at school tomorrow (Friday, 11/18).  Please note that there will be seating for all.  This is just if you want to reserve a table.
I am still waiting on information for our trip on December 20th.  As soon as I hear, I will let you know.  In the mean time, if you know you would like to go with us, please e-mail me your intentions.
I hope everyone has a fabulous Thanksgiving week!
November 13, 2011
We are 56 recorders strong!  Unless your child was on the Blue Ridge trip this past week, your child should have received their full packet and CD for recorder ensemble.  If they were gone, they will receive it in the morning at our Monday morning rehearsal.
Although I have not asked yet for the recorder ensemble fee, many of you have already paid it!  Thank you very much.  If you have not yet paid your $24, I am sending home a payment envelope with your child for you to do so.
Tomorrow morning we will have our scheduled Recorder Ensemble rehearsal.  I will be asking the students their T-shirt size (adult size shirts) so that we can get the shirts ordered.  These shirts will be used for some performances, but your child will need the formal outfit (listed above) for the upcoming Dessert Theater.  Girls should have a navy skirt and navy tights.  Finding navy skirts at this time of year can be difficult.  Some places to check are the following:
Frenchtoast.com
Kmart.com (carries the French Toast brand)
JCPenney.com
schooluniforms.com
Landsend.com
I have a limited number of navy skirts in the closet in the music room.  The students will be wearing a bow tie that I will supply.
Each year the chorus takes a trip in December to perform.  This year I am including the Recorder Ensemble in this trip.  We will be going to what was formerly known as the Festival of Trees on Tuesday, December 20th.  We will leave school at 9:30 and not return until 3:30.  This is after dismissal so students will need to be picked up or can be sent to ASP.  Parents are invited to attend and will get a reduced admission rate.  As soon as I have more information I will be sending it home.  For this performance we will need our formal performance outfits.
We are very busy preparing for our first performance at A Taste of Lovinggood on Friday evening, December 2nd.  We have not yet received our official performance time but I asked for the same time as last year, which will be in the 6:00 or 6:30 ish area.  I will let you know as soon as I hear.  For this performance, we will be wearing our T-shirts and jeans.
Our second performance will be at the Annual Dessert Theater on Tuesday evening, December 6th at the school.  Each family is asked to bring a dessert to share on the dessert buffet table.  There will be a limited number of reserved tables at this event.  Information about purchasing a reserved table will be coming home soon.  For this performance, we will be wearing our formal performance outfits.
I am really excited about this year's Recorder Ensemble!
