Your child should have completed 90% of the activities. If the folders activities are not complete talk to your child about it. Was it because they were pulled for reading or writing groups; they were pulled by another teacher, or they were playing instead of working? Any activities not completed can be used to stay fresh on skills over the summer.

We hope everyone is enjoying their holiday. Ms. Spinks has been busy uploading LOTS of new pictures on the website. Be sure to take a look at all we have been doing.
Progress Reports will be coming home Tuesday.
Last week, we learned all about Theodore Roosevelt (SMART SS28). He loved the environment an d nature. He did a lot to build museums for our country. We learned how the teddy bear got it's name from President Roosevelt.
Ms. Spinks read Magic Tree House # 8: Midnight on the Moon
Mrs. Riccard started reading A to Z Mystery: The Haunted Hotel.
2-10-12
Tuesday is Valentine's Day. Students are welcome to bring in valentines to pass out to their friends. Since we have 34 students, we ask that students only sign their name on the cards. This makes passing them out go much faster and helps us optimize instruction time. On Monday in class we will be making Valentine bags in which students will bring home their treats.
Help us show our Valentine spirit by wearing Valentine colors such as red, pink, white, or purple on Tuesday.
Last week we learned all about shadows and words with a "bossy r" (for example: car, star, stir, store, for) We continue to expand and strengthen our number sense and basic math facts. We learned how to take information from a math data chart and turn it into a bar graph. Mrs. Riccard read A to Z Mystery: Goose's Gold.
This week we have been learning about the needs of animals and have completed the pre-writing stage of "guess who" books. Next week we will be working to draft, edit and publish. We continued to make graphs from data charts. We began telling time to the hour and half hour and practiced more addition and subtraction facts to 18. Ms. Spinks read Magic Tree House: Midnight on the Moon. We had a fun time of science inquiry, observation and discussion when Mrs. Riccard brought in some dry ice.
Reminder: Monday, February 20 is President's Day Holiday.
2-1-12
We will be going to the Media Center to check out new books tomorrow (Thursday). Please make sure you bring your books so you can get a new one.
Please return you Home Connections - Math Games folder. It is time for us to fill it with new games. So far we only have four folders returned.
We need your help. Every day we are having numerous children who are extremely sleepy. Please make sure your child is getting a good night's sleep. 6 & 7 year olds need a minimum of 10 hours of sleep a day. If your child is sick, school is not the place they should be. They need to be at home where they can rest and get well.
1-24-12
REMEMBER: Family Math Night is this Thursday, January 26 6:30 - 7:30. We hope to see everyone there. It will be a fun night of math games to play with your family. You will also leave with some ideas of things to play at home.
Please send back your Home Connections - Math Games folder. It is time for us to fill it with new games that match this quarter's standards.
This week we will be going to the Media Center for check-out. Please make sure you bring your books back. Letters about overdue books went home today.
We have been very busy since returning from our break. We have learned all about Harriet Tubman (SMART folder SS32). This week our emphasis is on Dental Health. In phonics we have been learning long vowels and the letter patterns used to spell them correctly. We have begun daily editing practice. When checking our writing for mistakes we have learned to underline the first word of every sentence with GREEN and underline the last word of every sentence with RED. Next we look at every sentence going from GREEN to RED and check for COPS. COPS stands for Capitals, Overall (does it sound right), Punctuation, Spelling. In math we have been practicing math addition and subtraction facts to 18. We have been adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. We have also been counting coins and finding multiple combinations of coins to make specific amounts (SMART folder MA16, MA17).
Friday is the 100th day of school. During the day we will be doing various enrichment activities. To get prepared, SMART folder activity MA10 is a great 100th day activity. Bring yours in on Friday to share with the class. MA9 is another great 100th day activity to show going Above and Beyond.
12-22-11
What a great week we've had. Your children have been so cute as they dressed up for each special day this week. Ms. Spinks has taken LOTS of pictures. As soon as she gets her Christmas shopping finished, she will start loading the pictures.
Thank you so very much for all the incredible gifts you gave us. Your generosity has made us feel so blessed. We have fallen in love with your children and have enjoyed the first half of our year together.
Many of you have asked about homework and SMART folders over the Winter Break. Your children have been working so hard. They are excited about the holidays and they are tired of school work. This is the time of year, you get to spend with family and friends. Give your child a break from paper and pencil practice. Use your time with family to teach your child about relationships, and traditions. Use your family to read to and with your child to help them see the fun of reading. Use the hustle and bustle of preparing holiday meals to teach your child about time, measurement, and following directions. Give your child the time they need to renew themselves by relaxing and enjoying their time away from school. When we return to school on January 10, 2012, be ready to hit the road running.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
12-14-11
Today we had so much fun spreading holiday cheer. Be sure to check out the pictures on the "Special Luncheon" page.
As we get closer to the holiday, we have lots of exciting things going on.
This Friday, December 16, is a special day in first grade. We will sing holiday and winter songs during Music & Movement. All students are encouraged to wear a festive hat or bow. Children may make or decorate a hat, or make a hair bow. We want to be festive and get a cute picture.
All next week we will be having fun holiday related learning activities. To add to fun our class is encouraged to dress up.
Monday is Elf day. Look in your closet and find your best elf outfit. It should be colorful and exciting. You are also welcome to wear an elf hat.
Tuesday is Snowman Day. Come dressed as your favorite cold weather friend. Wear hats, and scarves.
Wednesday is our class party day. Wear festive red and green for our spcial time of celebration. Keep in mind, we will be making gingerbread houses, which can get kind of messy, so come casual. Parents and younger siblings are welcome.
Thursday we are having Reindeer Games. Come dressed like Santa's reindeer. Don't forget your jingle bells!!
Friday you get to enjoy your first day of Christmas break by not coming to school.
12-10-11
FINALLY, Ms. Spinks has posted the pictures of our Lewis & Clark Expedition. Be sure to look throughout the website as she has posted lots of new pictures. Be sure to look at our Teamwork Counter. We have really been working together as a team!
So far December has been packed with loads of fun. On Tuesday, the whole first grade had a day of rotations. We had fun applying our knowledge of the first grade standards to create holiday crafts in 5 different rooms.
Our shelf elf, Alvin has been very mischievous. Be sure to check out his page on our website to see pictures of all his shenanigans. We created an "Alvin journal" in which we are writing all about the things he is doing in our classroom.
We continue to graph our way through December. We made a graph of what is on top of our Christmas tree, what kind of Christmas decoration is on our front door, and whether we had Christmas lights outside of our home.
We have been reading many different holiday stories and doing activites to go with them. Because the beginning of the week was so rainy, we had to miss recess. Instead we watched some holiday movies just for fun.
We watched Frosty the Snowman and Frosty Returns, then talked about how they are alike and different. The students did a GREAT job remembering details of the similarities. We then followed directions to cut Frosty's hat out of black construction paper. Finally we showed off our creativity by transforming the hat into something totally different.
We read a sweet story called The Smallest Elf. Afterward, Mrs. Riccard directed us in drawing an elf. We gave the elf a name. Since all of the elves in the story had names beginning with the letter "e," ours did too. The story tells about the many different jobs that elves have in Santa's workshop. We are writing about the job we would have if we were elves.
Connor's mom came in to do a craft with us. Natalie's mom came in and helped us make holiday cards that she is going to deliver to the residents of the Brian Center. We also used geometry to make Christmas Tree pictures. We learned how to turn a rectangle into a triangle. We then learned how to make it smaller, and put them all together to create a masterpiece.
We read a non-fiction book to learn all about Hanukkah. We then read Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins by Eric Kimmel. It is a story about how Hershel saves Hanukkah by tricking the goblins. We wrote how we would trick the goblin king into lighting the Hanukkah candles. We learned how to play the Dreidel game. We learned that it is more fun to spin "Gimel" and get everything, than to spin "Shin" and have to put one in. We ended the day by making edible Dreidels using a marshmallow, a pretzel stick, a Hershey kiss and some cake frosting.
Letters about our holiday party went home on Monday. Our party is scheduled for Wednesday, December 21, 9:30 - 11:00. For our party we will be creating Graham Cracker Gingerbread Houses. You are welcome to start sending in your "building supplies." Students will have an opportunity to send in 35 small gifts to put in the Santa Bags of their classmates. During our party we will also get to look through our bags to see what we get. Parents, and younger siblings are welcome to join us for this special time.
12-1-11
THANK YOU to everyone who helped out on our Lewis & Clark Expedition. We were having so much fun. Just like the real Lewis & Clark, our expedition had a weather delay as we had to duck & cover for a tornado warning. Mrs. Spinks took LOTS of pictures. Unfortunately, her laptop is waiting for a new part before she can load them on the website. As soon as we can get them up, we will send out another newflash.
If you have not yet sent in the survey about how your family celebrates the holidays, please do so. Once the majority have returned, we will be contacting those of you who want to come in to share a craft or tradition with the class. Hopefully we can get a schedule up soon.
We are so excited! Yesterday our class got a special delivery from Santa Claus. It was an Elf on the Shelf. We read the book that came with it. Just like the book told us to, we chose a name for him. Our elf's name is Alvin.
In reading groups we are reading different versions of the Gingerbread man and writing or retelling at least four facts from the book.
In writing we are writing letters to send to Santa. We are making sure that our letters are more than just a list of wants for ourselves. We are including other people, and questions we want Santa to answer. We are hoping to get them sent off the early part of next week so Santa will have time to write us back.
In math we are graphing our way through December. We made a class graph about who put up their Christmas tree over Thanksgiving break, and who has an Elf on the Shelf at home. Today we sampled some egg nog and made a graph of who liked it.
11-15-11
Tomorrow is our Lewis & Clark Expedition. We are so very excited. We learned that Lewis & Clark took 6 months to prepare for their journey. Today we spent time preparing for our journey. We got our backpacks (out of cereal box) and journals (out of paper bags) ready. We also made a monocular (out of toilet paper roll) and compass (out of paper plates) to help us find our way.
To add more fun to our adventure, students are welcome to dress up like Lewis & Clark, or the Shoshone Indians. Please do NOT go buy a costume. Let your child be creative with items they find around the house. School rules and dress codes must still be respected.
Be sure to look for pictures tomorrow evening!!
11-9-2011
We have been learning about Lewis & Clark along with Sacagawea. Next Wednesday we will be having our unit culminating activity. It is going to be so much fun! A letter explaining the activity, volunteer needs, and supply needs will be coming home tomorrow (Thursday). As a heads-up, we are in need of 33 large cereal boxes and 35 toilet paper rolls.
In writing, we have read several stories about what the wild turkeys do to keep from being someone's Thanksgiving Dinner. We are working on creating a costume for our own turkey and will be writing stories about them. We are really concentrating on making sure EVERY sentence we write begins with a capital letter and ends with the correction punctuation.
In math we each created a data chart and a graph of our Halloween candy. We also are continuing to work on subtraction.
In reading, we have been learning about the elements of non-fiction books as we have been reading about Lewis and Clark. We continue to practice words with wh, sh, ch, and th. We learned that verbs are words that show action and began to pick out the verbs in the stories we are reading.
11-2-2011
Tomorrow Night (Thursday) is our PTA performance. Please drop your child off in the classroom by 6:15. Our classes will be standing on "stage-left" which is the side closest to the Gym. We are on the very end. Students should wear blue jeans, tennis shoes and a short-sleeved shirt. NO LONG SLEEVES!!! We do not want anyone getting too hot. They will also be wearing their class t-shirt over the shirt they wear in. At the end of the performance, you must return back to the classroom to get your child. They will need to remove their class t-shirt before leaving. We are so excited about the FABULOUS program you will get to see!!!
Reminder: Next Tuesday, November 8, is a teacher inservice day. Students do not have school.
10-27-2011

In math we are working on developing subtraction. We completed our unit on Benjamin Franklin (Students should be able to complete SMART activity # SS25). The chapter book read-aloud this week has been Magic Tree House number 5: Night of the Ninjas (Students should be able to complete SMART activity #LA10).

SMART Folder Clarification
The purpose of the SMART folder is to give your child opportunities to practice, and extend what they are learning in class. It is also a tool to help them learn how to be lifelong learners who go "Above and Beyond" which are skills many employers value. The SMART folder is designed for students to get help and direction from parents, but please let your child do all the research and writing (even if one task takes several nights to complete). It is OK for your child's folder to have FIRST GRADE work!
9-23-2011
Cheatham Hill Camp Out is tonight. Even if you are not camping, come on out and enjoy the festivities.
Progress Reports went home today. We sent one with every child. Please keep in mind, this is mid-term for the first 9 weeks. The first grade report card is standards based. The final "grade" reflects whether or not the student has mastered a particular skill. We still have time to teach and reteach, and your child still has enough time to show mastery of first quarter skills.
When sending us an e-mail after 3:00, please keep in mind that we may not see it until we get to school the next morning.
Have a fabulous weekend!!
9-20-11
MEDIA CENTER TOMORROW!!
Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the last day to send in class t-shirt orders. We will be placing the order tomorrow afternoon.

Not-so-Mystery Reader sign up sheets went home today. We will fill times on a first come, first serve basis. Please be sure to list a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice time if you are wanting to come in to read to us. A completed schedule will be sent home as well as posted on this website.
Thank you to Connor's dad for volunteering to be in charge of the class basket for the fall festival auction. He will be sending home more information soon. Thank you also to Lorenzo's grandmother who has volunteered to be the room parent.

If you are going to be placing a Scholastic Book order, they are due September 30. This is a great inexpensive way to build up your child's personal library. The books also make great Christmas gifts. If you need another catalog or the log-in information for on-line ordering, please contact Mrs. Riccard: leslie.riccard@cobbk12.org
We have been having lots of toys show up during instruction. Please check your child's bookbag before sending them to school, and remove any toys or distracting items. Any toys that escape during the day will be taken up. The toy will only be returned to an adult. Thank you for your help with this.

No school on Monday. Have a GREAT Labor Day Weekend.
Parents, please help us! If your child's afternoon dismissal is going to be different than what you wrote down at the beginning of the year, WE MUST HAVE IT WRITTEN IN A NOTE! This is county policy for the safety of your child. Plus, these are six and seven year olds, and we take their safety very seriously. If for any reason your child seems unsure, tells us differently, or makes a comment, our number one priority is to keep them safe. We will place them in the After School Program where we know for sure they have adult supervision.

A note from administration:
If a student is riding on their regular bus but wants to get off at another stop, the bus driver must have a note from the parents with the front office stamping it saying it is okay. It is county policy to have this done before the driver will let them off at another stop.
LOTS of changes on the website!! The weekly newsletter can be found on the "Newsletter" page. Be sure to check out all the pictures that have been added.
