Spelling Concept

§       This week – suffixes: -ed, -ful and -ly

·          A suffix is an ending added to a base word to change the way the word is used.

·          The suffix, -ed, signifies the past tense of a verb. It has three sounds:

o       -ed says /ed/ as in lift-ed

o       -ed says /d/ as in pulled

o       -ed says /t/ as in pushed

·          The suffix, -ful, means “full of.”

o       -ful is spelled with only one ‘l’

o       Add –ful to base words without changing them in most cases, as in painful, careful

·          The suffix, -ly, means “in a certain way or time.”

o       When adding the suffix, -ly, to consonant -le words, drop the le and add ly., as in simple – simply, crumble-crumbly

o       If the base word ends in ‘l,’ there will be two l’s, as in total – totally, final – finally.

o       Add ‘ly’ to other words without changing the base word.
