FYI - Pat Libert
Cornerstone Schools received some sad news today...Pat Libert a former teacher at Cornerstone Schools passed away on December 9th, 2009. She was only 61 years of age. There was no cause of death stated. You can read her obituary in it's entirety at www.ajc.com/obits and leave condolences there if you wish. The Libert's mailing address is 50 Over Dam, Beaufort, SC, 29906 if you want to send a card/note to her husband Bill and son Patrick.
Pat was a great educator and a wonderful person. She will be missed.

Field Trip tomorrow - 4th through 8th grade
Please be in dress uniform and bring a sack lunch!

Band Concerts this week:
ALL students will be performing both Thursday and Friday!
4th and 5th grade parents are invited to attend the Thursday performance at 4:00pm.
6th through 8th grade parents are invited to attend the Friday performance at 4:00pm.
Students are asked to arrive at 3:50pm to set up for performance. We suggest that students are picked up as usual and take time to have something to eat before the concert. Afterschoolers will be brought up to building C at 3:50pm.
Band Students need to be in dress uniform both days.

Students should be working on Book Reports due next Friday, December 18th.

Midterm Schedule
   *All exams will be written at 8:30am sharp to 10:30am. 
   *Regular schedule will follow exams.

Week of November 30th

SSO Meeting, Thursday, December 3rd at 6:30pm (Building C)
Deposits for the 2010-2011 school year are due in February. Find out how to use your tax dollars to offset tuition costs and cover next year's deposit.
This is a very straight forward process and there is no catch. ALL families that pay Georgia taxes are eligible.

Field Trip for Kindergarten & First Grade to Kudzu Playhouse is on Thursday, December 3rd. Please return your child's permission slip asap. We cannot take anyone without a signed permission slip.

Band Concerts next week:
Due to our capacity limitations Cornerstone band students (4th-8th grades) will host 2 performances: Thursday, December 10th and Friday, December 11th each at 4:00pm.
We ask that 4th & 5th grade parents come to the Thursday concert and 6th - 8th grade parents attend the Friday concert so that we have room for everyone.

Mid Terms
Heads up parents, mid terms for Jr. High (6th-8th) will be the week of December 14th. Ask your child what they are doing to prepare.

Book Reports
December book report is due on the 18th. Please help us encourage your child not to wait to the last minute.

Christmas Bazaar and Christmas Tree Raffle is on Thursday, November 19th from 2:00pm to 6:30pm. The draw for the Christmas Tree will take place at 6:00pm. The winner will be contacted that evening if not at the Bazaar.

 

Book Reports are due on Friday, November 20th!

 

Friday is Civies Day and Birthday Day! All celebrations will begin at 1:00pm please contact your classroom teacher regarding bringing in games. Please bring in only 'healthy food choices'...cheese, crackers, fruit and veggies.

6th through 8th grades will have a afternoon soiree down in the dining room with music and games at 1:00pm.

5th grade will host their Birthday Day celebration in their homeroom classes.

 

School is closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday for the entire week of November 23rd.

 

Check out our very own Music Man aka Mr. Drennen and Cornerstone Student, Logan Wert as they will be performing at Christmas in Central Park on Sunday, November 22nd from 12pm - 1pm and 2pm - 3pm.

Chunk Your Change for the Environment

This is a reminder that students will be collecting any loose change you may have in car line on Thursday and Friday of this week. If you have change just roll down your window and the student will come to you. If you do not have change just keep your car window up and the students will skip your car. Change collected will go towards the costs of setting up our Go Green Recycling program at Cornerstone. Thanks so much!

 

Photos will be ready for us next Thursday, November 19th. We will hand them out to students at the end of the day.

Week of November 2nd (oh my time flies when your having fun!)

Students will kick off Cornerstone's Recycling Program this week. The bins have been purchased and placed in the classrooms and dining rooms.

We will be recycling:

If you can help with pick up of items on a Friday please let us know. Or if you are interested in being on the Cornerstone Environmental Education Committee (CEEC) please contact Denise Carleton at dlcarleton@bellsouth.net.

 

CHUNK YOUR CHANGE is a fund raiser to help offset some costs of setting up the recycling program. On Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13 during car line (after-school), students will be collecting any spare change you would like to donate to the program. Students not in carline can bring in spare change during these days to their classroom.

Students will also collect any cell phones that are ready to be recycled with your spare change.

Christmas Bows

Anyone that would like to learn to make bows for Cornerstone Schools to sell at our 1st Annual Christmas Bazaar! Please email elainefrancel@bellsouth.net with Christmas Bows in the subject line. We will get together on Thursday, November 5th during the school day with Colleen B. to learn and make bows. Time TBD.

 

1st Annual Christmas Bazaar - Thursday, November 19th from 2:00pm to 6:30pm

A full range of Christmas decorations (including bows) will be for sale and the proceeds will go towards Cornerstone's Building Fund. All of the merchandise has been donated to Cornerstone Schools. This fund will help to purchase items for the new gym/auditorium at Cornerstone (ex. stage equipment, score boards).

 

Cornerstone students will be selling raffle tickets for a 9ft fully decorated Christmas Tree over the next couple of weeks. Tickets are $10 and the draw will be at 6:00pm during the Christmas Bazaar.

NEWS FLASH

 

Go Green at Cornerstone!  We need parent volunteers to take recycling off campus to a local recycling facility on Fridays, starting November 13.  Interested parents are to contact Denise Carleton at dlcarleton@bellsouth.net or 770-490-1083.  For more information about Cornerstone’s new recycling programs, visit the new “Go Green” section of our website.

 

CHUNK YOUR CHANGE to fund and support our new recycling program on Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13 during car line after-school.  Students not in carpool can bring in spare change during these days to their classroom.

Students will also collect any cell phones that are ready to be recycled with your spare change.

 

We will ALSO be accepting old cell phones and accessories during the change drive.  Working phones should be fully charged for 9-1-1 use by Family Haven (www.family-haven.org).  Broken phones also accepted.

 

Did you know?  Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a laptop or TV for 3 hours.

Class pictures for the entire school will be taken tomorrow (October 14th). All students are required to wear the Dress Uniform.

 

We strongly encourage you to bring your child into conferences with teachers. This is very beneficial in making sure everyone is on the same page and all parties have a good understanding of what is going on in the classroom.

If there is anything that needs to be discussed but would not be appropriate for the student to hear they will be asked to sit out in the hall for that portion of the conversation.

Immunization Forms
If you have been contacted by the office please remember to bring in your child's immunization form ASAP.

 

Parents, please check the tags on your child's sweatshirts/sweaters/jackets to make sure they have not inadvertantly taken someone elses. Also, we have a lost and found box in the foyer of building B that can be checked for missing items. 

Last Call for Washington, DC
Sign up closes today at 2:00pm. If you want to participate and have not returned your form please call us ASAP.

We have 32 participants (including chaperones) signed up as of this AM.

Students not participating will have regular classes! This is not a holiday. A major project has been developed based on the itinerary of the trip that will be facilitated by their regular teachers. Upon the return from the trip ALL students will be responsible for taking a test based on the content, studied or experienced, regarding our nation's capital.

Early Release

Reminder that we have added an additional Early Release Day to the October Calendar. Conferences will be October 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Pick up time is at 12 noon on all three days.

 

Dismissal Process 

Please help us make dismissal a smooth and accurate process by making sure you call the office ASAP with any change in your child's departure. We need to hear directly from you!  Examples: if you want your child to go home with another student, not get on / get on the bus or to be picked up by someone other than the usual pick up person, etc.

Pictures Reminder: October 13 - Elementary Individual Photos, October 14 - Jr. High (5th - 8th) Individual Photos,  October 15 - ALL class pictures. The dress uniform will be required for individual picture day and class picture day. If you are having trouble getting the plaid skirt or burgundy sweater please email us and we will work to get them for you.

FYI - any plaid skirt that is too big in the waist can have elastic put into the waistband free of charge.

 

Food Reminder: Please do NOT bring in food, for other students, that has not been approved by the office via a permission slip home to the parents of the students who will be participating in the eats. Students at Cornerstone are also asked not to share food. There is a lot of sensitivity around food for several reasons (allergies, weight, personal philosophies, etc.) at Cornerstone we wish to respect the individual choices made by our families.

Jr. High reminder that there is a Washington Trip meeting this week on Thursday, September 24th at 7:00pm. Please join us for information about the trip. We will make it as brief as possible but we do need to touch base with you all.

 

Thursday, September 24th is Parent Night at the Book Fair! It is the final opportunity for students to buy books. We will be open until 6:30pm.

 

Attention Parents - we are adding a 3rd half day for our teacher conferences in OCTOBER! The added half day will be Wednesday, October 21st. Your calendar should now read...Parent Conferences October 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Release time on these days will be 12:00noon.

 

Families have until 4:00pm on Wednesday, September 23rd to sign up for cultural lunch via email.

 

Cornerstone Schools will be OPEN on Tuesday, September 22nd!

 

 

Cultural Lunch is Friday, September 25th. We will be having sushi (California rolls, faux crab and cucumber rolls with fried rice, salad with ginger dressing and fruit). The cost per student is $6.00. Please send an email with 'cultural lunch' in the subject line to sign up and send in your check made out to Cornerstone Schools by Thursday, September 24th.

Due to our space limitations we will not be able to accommodate parents at our cultural lunches this year; sorry

 

Any student not participating must bring in a sack lunch, as there will be no alternative hot lunch served.

Since last December (2008), Cornerstone Schools has given out $240,000 in scholarships funded by our families and friends through the Private School Tax Credit Program.

We strongly encourage all of our families and friends to participate in the program to make your tax dollars work for you!

A $2500 contribution = a $2500 tax credit for you + a $2250 scholarship for a Cornerstone student.

All families that participate in the Private School Tax Credit program can apply for a Cornerstone Scholarship. Check out the 'Tax Credit & Scholarship Updates' page on this site for an application.

Our Cornerstone elementary students were looking sharp on Friday in their dress uniform. Our first field trip was a great opportunity to get all the kinks worked out. For those of you missing pieces of the dress uniform please be sure to have them ready for pictures in October. Please purchase the Cornerstone plaid skirt/skort at Buckhead Uniforms as the plaid is specific to our school. If purchasing a burgundy sweater or vest from somewhere other than Buckhead Uniforms, please make sure that it is burgundy and not plum.

 

Junior High Students (6th through 8th) please make sure you have your dress uniform ready for this Thursday, September 17th. The trip to the Gwinett Environmental Center will depart at 8:30am. Please bring a sack lunch.

 

We need volunteers to help assist younger students with wish lists.
Please let me know which time slots you are available to help and we will post a volunteer schedule in newsflash to confirm your placement:

 

Parent Meeting for Washington, DC field trip is on Thursday, September 24th at 7:00pm. We strongly encourage ALL 6th grade through 8th grade parents (students are welcome also) to attend the meeting, so we can have your input on the field trip. Attention Girls Grades K-5th:  If you are interested in joining Cornerstone's Girl Scouts, please e-mail Amy Saindon at asaindon@bellsouth.net for further details.  Meetings will begin in October.

 

Attention Boys Grades 1-8:  Cub Scout/Boy Scout sign-up night is Wednesday, September 9th at 7:00pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Holtzclaw Road.  Registration forms went home today with the boys.

 

The pool will remain open as long as the weather and water temperature are favorable for swimming.
