Dear Parents of the 7th & 8th grade class,
For the past two years we have been participating in the Senate Page Program and will do so again this year. Cornerstone Schools has been assigned 5 page positions in the Senate for one day in 2010 (usually in February or March). Any student interested in serving as a page in the Senate should write a one page essay explaining what the experience would mean to them. Students writing the best five papers will be awarded a page position.
Students should keep in mind that these papers should be their best work (capitals, punctuation, spelling and name on the paper all count). Papers are due on November 20th, 2009 to the Principal’s office. No late submissions will be accepted and papers without a name on them will not be considered.
Once we have selected the best 5 papers (students work only, please) we will notify the students and then forward their names, addresses and birthdates on to Senator Pearson’s office. We will not be given a date of participation until the New Year. A time of arrival at the Senate will not be confirmed until the night before the session for which the student will be participating. Parents must provide transportation to and from the Senate building.
Students chosen will receive an information packet in the New Year from the Senate office. Please let me know when you receive these packets as the school is not usually notified.
Please see the reverse for Page duties and guidelines.
Best regards,
Elaine M. Francel B.LR, M.Ed, Doctorate Candidate

Senate Page Duties:
Senate Page duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Senate Chamber. This offers a unique opportunity to experience Georgia's "Upper Chamber" first hand.
Senate Page Guidelines:
The Page is to be 12 years of age or older (6th grade students and above).
· Each Page is sponsored by the Lt. Governor or a Senator, but works for the whole Senate.
· The Page needs to be able to tell the Page Director the name of the Senator who is sponsoring him or her. (Senator Chip Pearson)
· Pages will wear Cornerstone Schools’ Dress Uniform.
· The Page serves for one day and works until the session is over that day. (Note: If a scheduled conflict occurs the Page will be relieved upon request of guardian.).
· Each page will receive a certificate of duty and a $10.00 honorarium.
· The Pages will have their pictures made with the Lt. Governor and their Senator. Each Page receives a copy of his or her picture, which is mailed by the Lt. Governor's or Senator's office in about 2 weeks time.
· The Pages are on their own for lunch unless their sponsors take them to lunch. (There is a snack bar in the Capitol and a cafeteria across the street in the Twin Towers building.)
· The Pages may not chew gum while paging.
· Adjournment time varies daily. Make sure the Page has a phone number to contact a parent when the Senate session is over. Each Page must sign out on the Page Payroll Sheet at the Page Desk before leaving for the day.
