What is the difference between Fine Arts and Art?

Art classes focus on the Visual Arts and address AKS specifically
for Visual Arts. Fine Arts integrates activities in Visual Arts,
Music, Theatre Arts and Movement. The curriculum for Fine Arts
addresses selected AKS in Visual Arts and General Music as well
as many Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum from the
regular classroom. Theatre Arts curriculum are based on Georgia
State Standards for Elementary Arts Education. In addition, we
are doing some special activities to integrate with our school
goal of improving Writing and Math instruction in my classes.

Why do I never receive any Artwork from my child or see it displayed?

The Artwork we produce in Fine Arts class is usually made in
cooperative groups as a group project. Most of our projects are
used as backdrops or costumes for our plays. In some of the
younger grades, individual projects are made and then put
together to make a backdrop. The older students are asked
to create their backdrops and scenery as a group. This
encourages cooperative learning and is a great skill to develop.
If you watch some of our plays, you will get to see the student's
work in the play.

Can I attend a performance of my child's play this year?

Yes, parents have an open-door policy in my class and are welcome
to come observe any classroom activity or performance. I will be
sending out Newsletters with information about class activities
and performances. Please look for specific information about
performance opportunities under Announcements and Calendar
information on this website. Please feel free to stop by
anytime. You are always welcome.

Why is the Drama Club only offered to Fifth Graders?

I would love to open this opportunity to more students, but we
have so many students interested that we have had to start
conducting auditions. This is an extracurricular activity for
the students and myself that requires a great deal of time and
effort. I chose Fifth Grade to help inspire them with an
interest in Drama as they prepare to go to Middle School where
they can choose to be involved in that program.

Why do some people call this class Drama and why do you call it Fine Arts?

Many people call this class Drama because that is the majority of
activities that we conduct in this program. I call it Fine Arts
because it really is an Integrated Arts class, including
activites in Music, Visual Art and Movement along with Theatre
Arts curriculum. Also, many students experience stage-fright
issues at the term Drama and I always offer them the opportunity
to choose another art they feel more comfortable to partcipate in.

How is the grade for this class listed on the Report Card?

My class is listed as, "Language Arts Enrichment" on the Report
Card, as this is a new class and the County does not have a
listing for Drama/Fine Arts and this is a great description of
the academic focus of this class. My name is also listed next to
my grades. If you have any questions about your child's grade,
feel free to contact me.
