I am a graduate of Oklahoma State University. I graduated from OSU in
1993 with a Bachelor Of Science in Early Childhood Education. I completed
coursework for a Minor in Theatre Arts as an undergraduate and recently
graduated from Lesley University with a Masters Degree in Curriculum and
Instruction with a specialization in Teaching through the Arts. I have been
teaching for sixteen years and have experience at such schools as Oklahoma
State University Child Development Laboratories, Winter's Chapel
Kindergarten, Stone Mill Elementary and now Dacula Elementary. I taught
First Grade at Dacula in 2001/2002. In 2002, I had the opportunity to start
a new Fine Arts program here at Dacula. I began by teaching Art, Music and
Drama to First and Second graders. In 2003, we extended the program to
include K-5 students. The class was such a success, we have decided to
continue offering it to all classes in a semester format. Fine Arts is a
class that integrates activities in Drama, Visual Art, Music and Movement.
I feel very fortunate to start this great new program at such a wonderful
school.
I am married to Tim Grubbs who is a Veterinarian at Lawrenceville Animal
Care Center on Lawrenceville Highway near Sugarloaf Parkway. I have two
children; a daughter in Seventh Grade who attends Dacula Middle School and a
son in Fifth Grade here at Dacula Elementary. I now reside in Grayson and
love teaching in this great community.
I believe that all children can learn and have different learning
styles.
I believe that learning is an active process and that children learn best
by paricipating in hands-on, relevant and interesting activities. My goal
for each student is that they reach their full potential at their own pace
and gain confidence in all of their skills. I have learned that all students
have differing levels of abilities in Multiple Intelligences and that
integrating the Arts with academic curriculum helps to address those
abilities. I believe that each child has an innate talent or inclination
toward some area of the Arts and simply needs some encouragement to find
which one. I believe that all areas of learning are connected, and that
integration of curriculum helps students to gain skills in making
connections in their own learning by transferring prior knowledge. My Fine
Arts class integrates activities in Art, Music, Drama and Movement. In
addition, I have activities and materials which are integrated with specific
Social Studies and Language Arts curriculum at each grade level. In this
way, students are acting out what they are learning in the classroom through
the Arts. These creative activities offer students reinforcement of skills
and true assimilation of knowledge that will always be a part of them. I
want each child to leave my classroom with a love of school, learning and
the Arts. I believe that learning should always be fun and exciting!
