Social Studies: Students took notes on Mexico, watched ships pass through the
                Panama Canal, and continued to work on yesterday's assignment
                using the SQ3R reading strategy. 
                                              
Reading: Students continued to work on their "Robotic Nation" assignment from
         yesterday.



Tuesday, January 31

Social Studies: Students were quized over what they learned in the vidoes 
                yesterday. Next, they learned the SQ3R reading comprehension
                strategy and are applying it to a section in the textbook
                (to be finished in class tomorrow).
                                             
Reading: Students read article "Robotic Nation" after writing about what they
         already know about robots and then evaluated the author's vision of
         the future of robotics.  Finally, they were to comment on whether or
         not the article changed their minds about robots.



Monday, January 30

Social Studies: Students began learning the major islands of the Caribbean and
                their capitals, and we took notes on a video about the 
                Caribbean.  Please memorize the location of Cuba, Jamaica,
                Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico by tomorrow and
                know their capitals.
                                             
Reading: Today students went to the media center to read or check out books.
         No homwework.  Lesson 1 vocabulary quiz next Monday.



Thursday, January 26

Social Studies: The Canada test was today; I should have the results posted on
                Pinnacle by 6 PM at the latest.

                The US - Canada compare-contrast chart (or Venn diagram) is 
                due tomorrow. Facts should include relationship with
                England / the United Kingdom; government, economy,
                multiculturalism (having people of different cultures living
                within the same country), and at least one other topic of your
                own choosing.

                                             
Reading: Today students completed a fact/inference activity for a grade and 
         were allowed to read independently afterwards.  Tomorrow is silent
         reading day.

Social Studies: Canada Test tomorrow - Study!

                First Period contiunes a project in which they are each
                making a sign in French and English (like the ones in Quebec),
                with the French larger than the English. Students are using an
                online translator; project due Monday.

                Second, Fourth, and Fifth Periods continue to work Quebec
                independence project, reading articles & discussing them.

                Canada test Thursday.  It will mainly be on the information in
                your yellow graphic organizer. I will try to make a podcast

                independence project. They began reading articles after the
                test today.

                independence movement and some of the efforts to preserve
                French culture (especially language)in the province.

                the Quebec independence movement. They will start reading

Social Studies: Students continued working on daily geography (see last

                organizers (article given out in class today).

Reading: Students received mythology book; each student has been assigned a

Social Studies: Students began a daily geography activity on Canada (due 
                Weds. for 2nd, 4th, and 5th periods; Thurs. for 1st) and made 
                a graphic organizer to which we began adding information on
                Canada's environmental problems and natural resources.

Reading: Health survey and read-aloud from The Odyssey in preparation for a

Wednesday, January 11

Social Studies: Students reviewed the Canadian provinces and territories and 
                their capitals using the Sheppard Software games in the lab.

                Second qualifying round for the Geography Bee for those who
                made it through the first round.

Reading: We finished the read-aloud of Escape from Pompeii - students
         finished and turned in their organizers in which they identified the
         characters, setting, and theme and listed predictions.

Social Studies: Students learned about Ontario today in preparation for a 
                compare/contrast assignment.

                or quiz to improve your grade.  The grading period ends
                tomorrow.

Tuesday, December 20        

Social Studies: Students learned about Nova Scotia today in preparation for a 
                compare/contrast assignment.

Social Studies: Today our councelor, Dr. DePetro, had our students for a
                guidance lesson in the computer lab where they explored their
                learning styles and investigated potential career paths.

                 No homework unless you owe work. Retests tomorrow for those
                 students who need to take it.

Friday, December 16        

Social Studies: Students got back the quiz on economics and government and we
                went over the questions and answers. We reviewed the Canadian
                provinces and territories and watched a short video about
                Edmonton and the Calgary Stampede.

Social Studies: Students got to see their graded economics test and ask
                questions. We discussed different types of trade barriers,
                including tariffs, embargos, and quotas. Some classes then
                watched a brief video on Croatia and the economics of 
                over-fishing.

Social Studies: We discussed trade barriers and the European Union (follow-up
                on yesterday's investigation). Students also received an 
                economics packet, and we watched and discussed a video on the
                factors of production.

Monday, November 7         

Social Studies: We worked on our Cold War timelines, some classes began the
                new Daily Geography assignment (due Friday), and others
                watched a Brain Pop video on the Cold War and answered the
                questions afterwards for a grade.
                                   
Reading: Anastasia's Album quiz was today and KWL sheets were turned in.

Friday, November 4         

Social Studies: We watched part of a documentary about how Estonia was 
                affected when it was absorbed into the Soviet Union and how 
                they pushed for independence in the last years of the Soviet
                Union.

                Next, students began working on a timeline of Cold War
                events.                
                                   
Reading: Today was silent reading day. The Anastasia's Album quiz will be on
         Monday, and KWL sheets will be due right after the quiz (It is open-
         notes, but not open-book).




Thursday, November 3         

Social Studies: Test over the European history standards was today. -

               
                 No homework
                   
Reading: Students watched part of the Disney movie Anastasia and compared it
         to what they have learned from reading the book, Anastasia's Album. 

         The book quiz will be Monday, and KWL sheets will be due right after
         the quiz.

Wednesday, November 2         

Social Studies: Test over the European history standards tomorrow. -
               
                * Please note: You can find an audio review session on this

                               Items 8 & 9 on the checklist will not be on
                               Thursday's test; we will have a separate quiz

Reading: Today and tomorrow students are to finish Anastasia's Album and

Social Studies: Today we discussed the Cold War and the rise of the US and
                Soviet Union as superpowers following World War II.

Social Studies: Today's topic was the Holocaust and we watched and listened to
                survivors talk about their experiences. Students took notes.

Thursday, October 27         

Social Studies: We discussed how the Treaty of Versailles and a worldwide
                economic depression following World War I helped contribute
                to the rise of Hitler and the Nazis in Germany.

                No homework; we will have a test over the European history
                standards on Thursday of next week.      
                  
Reading: Students began reading Anastasia's Album filling out KWL sheet. 

         No homework.


Wednesday, October 26         

Social Studies: We discussed the current recession and compared it with the 
                Great Depression that affected the world after World War I.

                No homework.      
                  
Reading: Students received a copy of the book Anastasia's Album and began
         filling out a KWL sheet on the subject of Anastasia and the Russian
         Revolution. 



Tuesday, October 25         

Social Studies: We reviewed the causes of World War I and the Russian
                Revolution. We also watched a short film about the Christmas
                truce during World War I and learned about the Treaty of
                Versailles. Finally, students (working with a partner)sorted
                statements about WWI into causes and results.

                No homework.      
                  
Reading: Today we finished The Faithful Friend and students completed their
         organizers, including the theme and a list of characters,
         predictions,and questions. If you did not turn this in today, please 
         finish it for homework and turn it in tomorrow.


Monday, October 24         

Social Studies: We reviewed the causes of World War I and discussed answers 
to some of the questions that went with the religion packet. We also 
discussed the role that ancient Rome played in shaping events that would lead
to the holocaust. No homework.
                        
Reading: Students toured the book fair and presented vocabulary skits.





Tuesday, October 18         

Social Studies: Today students watched a short video tour of the Volga River
                in Russia and read and discussed pages 268 - 273 in the
                textbook (about Russia's transition from communism to
                democracy).     No homework.
                        
Reading:  We continued our read-aloud of The Faithful Friend and watched a 
          video introduction of the book fair.  No homework.


Monday, October 17        (Today begins the second grading period.)

Social Studies: We reviewed and discussed three major environmental problems
                of Europe (acid rain, air pollution, and the Chernobyl
                accident) and looked at photographs and illustrations to gain
                a better understanding. We also watched a cartoon about the 
                Crimean War and looked for similarities in its causes and 
                those of World War I (imperialism & nationalism).
                No homework.
                        
Reading: Introductions and discussed rules and expectations. We also began a
         read-aloud of The Faithful Friend; students are writing down the
         characters, their questions and predictions, and will identify the 
         theme by the end of the book.
         No homework.


Thursday, October 13  

Social Studies: Today we had a "guest speaker" on communism and the Russian
                Revolution.  No homework unless you owe work.

                        
Reading: The Invitation to the Game quiz was today; reading logs are also due
         -- please turn it in tomorrow if you did not today (unless you
         already reached your independent reading goal for the grading
         period).

Social Studies: We reviewed causes of World War I and role-played the events 
                that led to the war.  No homework unless you owe work.

                  study if you plan to take it.

Wednesday, October 5   

Social Studies: All classes began a project investigating three Eurpean
                environmental problems (acid rain in Germany, air pollution
                in the UK, and the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in the
                Ukraine). Students are using links on this website to help
                them identify the causes and effects of each as well as what
                has been done to solve each problem.  

                Homework: (all classes) Spend at least 15 minutes working on
                           environmental problems chart.

                Homework: (periods 2,4,&5 only) study Eastern European 
                           capitals for quiz tomorrow.
                              
            
Reading: Finish chapter 8 of Invitation to the Game. 
         Vocabulary pages 114 -115 are due tomorrow.

                due to a conflict with the Jewish holiday. 
                
Reading: Finish chapter 4 of Invitation to the Game; choice assignment due
         Friday (letter to a character, summary of chapter 3, or list of the

Social Studies: Students worked on their country projects in the media center
                today. Presentations will run Thursday through Monday.

Monday, September 26   

Social Studies: European exploration presentation with emphasis on Columbus.
                Students are examining Columbus' own writings to determine if
                he was involved in various activities while he was in the 
                Americas. This will be continued tomorrow, plus we'll have
                more time to finish the country projects, which should be 
                finished before class starts on Thursday.

                The map quiz over Eastern Europe has been moved to next 
                Tuesday due to a conflict with the upcoming Jewish holiday.

Friday, September 23   

Social Studies: Students continued working on country projects in media
                center.  These will be due next Wednesday (see scoring rubric

Social Studies:  Students turned in the ancient Rome questions (from last
                 Friday). Also, we had a Constitution Day activity. No
                 homework.

Tuesday, September 13   Mr. Wilson is still away on jury duty.

Social Studies:  Students worked on Daily Geography #3, read pages 226-233 in
                 the textbook, and began constructing a chart describing
                 various religions as they relate to Eastern Europe.

Monday, September 12   Please note: Mr. Wilson is away on jury duty this week.

Social Studies:  Students began Daily Geography #3, read pages 219-225 in the
                 textbook, and had the choice of answering the review
                 questions, constructing a graphic organizer, or writing a
                 letter as though they are in Eastern Europe and that
                 includes at least 8 facts from the chapter.  Since the books
                 cannot be taken home, this will NOT need to be finished as
                 homework.

Reading: Today students read article "The End of Cheap Oil" and identified
         the topic sentence/main idea in each paragraph before summarizing
         the entire article in five sentences.

Friday, September 2

Social Studies:  Students began writing their compare/contrast papers on two
                 European countries (some first period students are comparing
                 one European country with the US or another country; this is
                 not an option for periods 2,4,or 5). At least one paragraph 
                 should discuss how the two countries are alike, and another
                 paragraph should explain differences. Try to support your 
                 ideas with examples or evidence whenever possible. This 
                 paper is due Wednesday.

                 Homework - Study Europe map (5-10 minutes); the Europe map
                            test has been moved to Thursday. See Thursday's
                            homework notes below for details.

Reading:  Today was silent reading.  Please be filling in the reading chart as
          you complete books and have a parent sign off on each one. Students
          should be up to 525 pages by Friday (this will count for a grade).

Social Studies:  Today students learned about Spain.
