Word Wall Words


	These key terms are posted on the Word Wall in my 
classroom.  They represent skills I incorporate into your child's 
daily reading lessons.  All students need to know what these words 
mean, and how they are used in reading and language.

	These terms are reviewed and used in class.  However, it 
would be benefecial if these key terms were reviewed periodically at 
home.

author/illustrator: writer/artist
adjective: describing word, such as pretty, modifies a noun
adverb: describes how, how many, to what extent, modifies a verb
antonym: opposite, antonym for nice could be mean
casual register of language (see FAQ page)
context clues (see FAQ page)
compound words: two words put together to make one word: cupcake
compare/contrast: to explain how things are alike/different
cause/effect: an event that makes something else happen
comprehension: understanding what you read
contractions: do not=don't, for example
fiction: books that are not true: folk tales, science fiction...
fact: a statement that can be proven true
fluency: reading smoothly without difficulty or faltering
formal register of language (see FAQ page)
genre: type of literature: poetry, fantasy, non-fiction, fiction, folk tale...
inference (see FAQ page)
story elements: characters, setting, problem/conflict, solution
main idea/theme: what the story/passage is mainly about
metaphor (see FAQ page)
noun: person, place, or thing
purpose: mainly to inform, persuade, entertain, or express an opinion
passage: one or more paragraphs about a particular subject
plot: what happens in a story
prediction: tell what one thinks might happen next
sequence: order of events in a story
scanning: moving eyes quickly over printed text to locate information
text structure: elements a book includes (glossary, index, etc.)
title page: shows the title, author, illustrator, publisher
verb: action word
visualize: while reading, being able to

synonym: similiar to, attractive could be a synonym for pretty
opinion :a statement that reflects what someone thinks
rate: the speed at which one reads/vital to comprehension
enunciate: speak clearly, pronouncing all sounds in words
simile (see FAQ page)
proper noun: specific name for a person, place or thing
non-fiction: books that are true and usually provide information
poetry: verse written to inspire thought
narrative (see FAQ page)
folk tale: a story initially passed on by word of mouth
realistic fiction: made-up characters, occurs in modern times
science fiction: a story set in the future
fantasy: includes elements that are impossible (magic)
historical fiction: a story set in the past
mystery: a story w/a puzzling event, not solved until the end
biography/autobiography: a story about someone's life
first person: the story is told by one of the characters
third person: the story is told by a narrator, not a character
