The following will give you an idea of the Core Knowledge Curriculum 
     in science and social studies for each grade level.  In addition to
     the Core Knowledge Curriculum Downtown Elementary also teaches the
     Georgia Performance Standards.


Kindergarten:
     Plants, Animals, 5 Senses, Magnetism, Seasons/Weather, and Ecology
     Seven Continents, Native American Peoples, Early Exploration, and
          Presidents
First Grade:
     Living Things and Environment, Human Body Systems, Matter, Electricity,
          Astronomy, and the Earth
     Early Civilization, Exploration and Settlement, American Revolution, 
          American West, and American Symbols and Figures
Second Grade:
     Cycles in Nature, Inects, Cells, Magnetism, and Simple Machines
     The Constitution, War of 1812, Westward Expansion, Civil War, Civil 
          Rights, and the Geography of the Americas
Third Grade:
     Animal Classification, Body Systems, Vision and Hearing, Light, Optics,
          and Sound, Ecology, and Astronomy
     Earliest Americans, Explorers, The 13 Colonies, Immigration and    
          Citizenship, and American Symbols and Figures
Fourth Grade:
     Body Systems, Chemistry, Electricity, Geology, and Meteorology
     American Revolution, Constitutional Government,  Early Presidents and 
          Politics, Reformers, and American Symbols and Figures
Fifth Grade:
     Classifying Living Things, Cells, Plants, Life Cycles, Endocrine and
          Reproductive Systems, and Chemistry
     Westward Expansion, Civil War, Native Americans, and U.S. Geography
