Vocabulary - Rocks and Minerals

HOMEWORK for 11/16-20/09 - same as usual vocabulary.  Folders are due
on Wednesday.  There will be a test on Friday.  It will be matching 
rather than fill-in-the-blank this week.

1.  cleavage:  the tendency of a mineral to split easily along flat 
             surfaces

2.  hardness:  a measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched

3.  streak:  the color of a mineral whien it is ground to a powder

4.  rock:  a solid material made up on one or more minerals

5.  rock cycle:  a continuous series of changes that racks undergo

6.  mineral:  a nonliving solid material that has a definite chemical
              makeup

7.  luster:  the way a mineral shines, or reflects light

8.  igneous:  the type of rocks that form when melted rock from deep
              below Earth's surface cools and hardens

9.  metamorphic:  the type of rocks that form when exicting rocks are
             changed by extreme heat and pressure

10.  sedimentary:  they type of rocks that form when sand, particles 
               of rock, bits of soil, and the remains of once-living
               things are pressed together and harden
