What we are learning in December...
Open Court Phonics: Students will attach sounds to letters and listen for and
identify those sounds in the initial and final positions of words. They will
compare one sound to another. They will learn to identify words by looking
for the letters that represent their initial and final sounds. Students will
begin working on word families. (Example: pat, mat, sat,…)Students will
explore making sentences.
Reading: Students will continue to sequence pictures to retell a story.
Students will identify books as non-fiction or fiction.
Writing: Students write using pictures and phonetically sounded out words.
Students will understand that good writer’s think about letters and words and
that their pictures go with their words. Students will write about things
they already know.
Sight Words: me, and, big, for
Math Concepts: Students will recognize, compare, and combine shapes:
triangle, circle, rectangle, square, sphere, and cube. Students will compare
and order length, capacity, height, and weight. Students will know the days
of the week, months of the year, and the four seasons. Students will
understand the concept of ten using a number line, models, comparing amounts,
and writing.
Social Studies: Students will demonstrate an understanding of New Year’s Day.
Students will understand the difference between a map and globe. Students
will explore “Holidays Around the World”.
Science: Students will demonstrate an understanding of gravity’s effect on
objects. Students will demonstrate an understanding of night and day.
