Mrs. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a minor in
Education and Spanish (plus more than 30 post-bacc hours in Spanish).
Certified through the state of Georgia to teach English for grades 6-12 and
Spanish for grades P-12, she has taught for a total of eighteen years. Her
experience includes a previous 4 years at Evans High School from 1985-1989,
one year at St. Mary's on the Hill, one year at Aquinas High School and 3
years at Evans Elementary from 1999-2002, returning to Evans High School in
2002, thus having teaching experience at every grade level. She is a 1980
graduate from Evans High School, a 1985 graduate of Augusta State University,
and will complete this year a Masters degree in Spanish Language and Culture
from the University of Salamanca, Spain.
Regarding additional teaching experience, Mrs. Johnson helped start
Kindermusik of Augusta, a music education program for children ages 0-7, in
1995, taught there for 11 years, and was director of the program for 7 of
those years. She also taught the 2 year old pre-school class at Martinez
United Methodist Pre-School for the 1998-1999 school year.
Mrs. Johnson is a member of FLAG (Foreign Language Association of Georgia)
for which she has presented twice at professional conferences. She is a
member of the Steering Committee for FLAIR (Foreign Language Alliance for
International Rapport)since 2004 and was named the 2010 FLAIR Teacher of
the Year. A member of the executive board for AATSP-GA (American Association
of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese), she was appointed media director in
2005, for which she publishes the chapter newsletter three times each year,
has created and maintains the chapter website at www.aatsp-ga.org. She
currently serves as the AATSP Georgia Chapter president for the 2012-2014
term. Mrs. Johnson has previously served as co-director, along with Heather
Young of Archer High School and Christy Presgrove of Greenbrier High School,
of the statewide Spanish Immersion Camp held annually in March near Atlanta.
She volunteers each year as a chaperone and involves her EHS students in the
camp. Through serving on the executive committees for FLAIR and AATSP-GA,
Mrs. Johnson has been involved in the planning and execution of annual
teacher conferences for professional development in foreign language for each
organization featuring notable speakers such as Ken Stewart, Greg Duncan,
Patty Lozano and Blaine Ray on topics related to best practice in foreign
language teaching. Additionally she has been part of providing numerous
opportunities for foreign language students outside of the regular classroom,
such as immersion camp, poster contests, composition contests, national
exams, and two honor societies in addition to providing opportunities to earn
recognition for professors, teachers, and students of the year through her
leadership in these organizations.
At Evans High School, Mrs. Johnson is the sponsor of the Sociedad Honoraria
Hispánica sponsored by AATSP. This is a national organization recognizing
students who excel in Spanish. She has been a member of our very successful
Relay for Life team since 2006. Mrs. Johnson also organizes the Wall of Fame
committee that recognizes former Evans High students and professionals for
their outstanding achievement, and has emceed the Miss EHS pageant since
2008. In 2011 she was very honored to be selected as Star Teacher by Paige
Yelvington.
In the community Mrs. Johnson has served as a Georgia Health Volunteer, along
with her honor society students, at Clínica Latina assisting with financial
documents for patients since 2008. Spanish honor society and AP students from
EHS directed and taught the after school Spanish program at Bel Air
Elementary throughout the school year for 2007-2008. The honor society has
also purchased Christmas gifts for underpriveleged families in Columbia
County since 2003, supported students at EHS with donations when needed, and
supported, when financially possible, an orphanage in Honduras for children
with HIV/AIDS (Montaña de Luz) since 2007.
Mrs. Johnson is a member of St. John United Methodist Church where she
currently serves as chairperson of the Worship Committe, as Wedding Director,
as a member of the Chancel Choir, and had previously served as the Wesley
Choir director from 1992-2003.
The mission for any foreign language class should include the goals of
attaining communicative ability in the target language, a broader scope of
the world in which we live, an appreciation for other cultures, and a richer
understanding of the English language through comparative study.
