Saturday was Constitution Day
The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land; a constitution in general
is simply a plan of government, nothing more.
Our Constitution provides for three branches of government, each of which
is independent of the other; they all CHECK AND BALANCE each other.
The LEGISLATIVE BRANCH - MAKES THE LAWS and consists of the Senate (2
senators from each state) and the House of Representatives (representation
of each state is based on population). If there is a tie in the Senate
vote, the Vice president will break the tie.
The EXECUTIVE BRANCH - ENFORCES OR EXECUTES THE LAW; the executive (the
president, the governor of a state) uses the military and the National
Guard and the State Police to help him/her enforce the law.
The JUDICIAL BRANCH - JUDGES IF A LAW IS CONSTITUTIONAL
To get these ideas straight in your mind, think of the pink tennis shoes

c)A republic and a democracy are the same thing.

Following is the ethnic groups information which hwe had on PowerPoint
today in class; please copy onto new CRCT review sheet.
SS7G4 Describe the diverse cultures of the people who live in Africa.
a. Explain the differences between an ethnic group and a religious group.
Religion concerns how populations worship, perceive a power beyond the
earthly world, think of their spirituality – traditional, Christian, Jewish,
Islamic, Buddhist, etc.
Ethnic group encompasses any or many of the following: common religion,
common language, common traditions, common genetic heritage, common
physical characteristics; common social attitudes.)
b. Explain the diversity of religions within the following ethnic groups:
ARAB – May share genetic (tie ot Arabian Peninsula tribes), language,
cultural, and/or religious traits; mainly Southwest Asia and North Africa;
Arabs pre-date Islam, so there are Christian, Jewish Arabs, though the
majority are Muslims; Arabic language is main unifying factor in being an
Arab, and as Arabic is the language of the Qur’an, the language spread with
the religion;
ASHANTI – primarily Ghana and Ivory Coast, matrilineal society (inheritance
through mother's side); at first a confederation of tribes until the descent
of the GOLDEN STOOL: The Golden Stool is sacred to the Ashanti, as it is
believed that it contains the 'Sunsum' — spirit or soul of the Ashanti
people. Just as man cannot live without a soul, so the Ashanti would cease to
exist if the Golden Stool were to be taken from them. The Golden Stool is not
just sacred; it is a symbol of nationhood, a symbol that binds or unifies all
Ashanti, the stool was believed to be so sacred not even the king was allowed
to sit on it. Ashante are many different religions, but mainly Christian.
BANTU- label for about 600 ethnic groups in Africa from Cameroon to the east
to the south of Africa; Bantu mean “people” or “humans”; Swahili is language
and there are many dialects; first occupied lands on Nigeria-Cameroon border
in about 2000 BC; They were a farming-herding people and moved east and south
in a series of big migrations. In terms of religion, they are a mixed bag.
Despite whatever religion they adopt, the retain beliefs in ANIMISM
(traditional), curses, etc.
SWAHILI - a Bantu ethnic group and culture found in East Africa, mainly
reside on the Swahili Coast, in Zanzibar, coastal Kenya, Tanzania and
north Mozambique. The name Swahili is derived from the Arabic word
meaning "coastal dwellers.” Arabic traders converted early Swahili
inhabitants. An orthodox form of the religion is practiced. In addition to
more orthodox practices, the Swahili also are known for their use of
divination, which has adopted some features from underlying traditional
indigenous beliefs. In addition to orthodox beliefs in djinn, many Swahili
men wear protective amulets around their necks, which contain verses from the
Koran. Divination is practiced Often the diviner incorporates verses from
the Qu'ran into treatments for certain diseases by instructing a patient to
soak a piece of paper containing verses of the Qu'ran in water. With this ink
infused water, literally containing the word of Allah, the patient will then
wash his body or drink it to cure himself of his affliction. It is only
prophets and teachers of Islam who are permitted to become medicine men among
the Swahili.
c. Evaluate how the literacy rate affects the standard of living.
(Illiteracy prevents people from acquiring anything but the lowliest work and
competing in a rapidly changing society. The greater the unemployment rate,
the more countries have to hire out the better jobs, the lower the standard
of living. When women are not educated, the importance of education is seldom
transmitted to younger generations.)
