Sept. 2nd-5th

Thank you to all the parents that attended Open House. I know you received a
lot of information. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Last week the class completed a culminating science activity of creating
a “pet rock.” The children brought in a rock and make predictions about
length, mass, hardness, and buoyancy. The children then performed tests to
determine the actual facts about the rock. They then painted their rocks and
wrote short stories about them. What a fun way to learn about rocks and
science!

Next week be ready for rounding to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000 in math. We
will also start our responding to literature writing piece. Our week is full
and fun.

Looking Ahead:

COGAT testing – Sept. 17th-19th
Please be to school on time and eat a healthy
breakfast before school.

Aug. 25th-29th
We love learning! This week we preformed the Readers Theater called Anansi.
This is a folktale about a spider, tiger, and monkey. This folktale explained
why spiders spin webs. We made masks and posters and preformed our plays. We
even had a special surprise guest join us.... Ms. Chesser.
The students enjoyed learning more about rocks and minerals. We learned the
three types of rocks along with a song to help us remember some rock facts.
Ask your child to sing you the "Types of Rock" song.
Remember, there is no school on Monday due to Labor Day. On Tuesday, we
will visit the book fair as a class. If you choose to send in money, please
place it in an envelope labeled "book fair money."
I can't wait to start another fabulous week with your child. Together we
are learning, exploring, and making memories. School is so cool!!!

Aug.18th-22nd
Three cheers for another great week at Pickett's Mill! This week the class
dived into more Traditional Literature. We read Goldilocks and the Three
Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and a silly version of Cinderella. The
students discussed story elements for each story and completed a story map.
We also dived deeper into place value and number sense. We used the SMART
Board to practice many skills and concepts. In science we examined real
minerals from a collection and drew pictures of both rocks and minerals.
The students have been learning cursive letters and are on a great start to
becoming fluent writers. Each student in the class has been working on
creating a five paragraph story about his/her favorite vacation. We worked
step-by-step to complete a graphic organizer and are now working on our first
draft.
Please notice that on Friday a field trip form went home. The third grade
team has planned a field trip that is connected to our science standards.
There are five field trips included. Three of the field trips will be on
campus at Pickett’s Mill and two will be off campus. Please return the
permission slips and donation of $20.00 by Friday. This will be a series of
trips to remember.
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 4th. Open House will
take place at 6:30. There will be a PTSA meeting in the cafeteria first, then
all parents will meet in my classroom for a 30 minute meeting. Hope to see
all of you there!
Homework will be sent home on Monday and returned on Friday. I have sent
home a "Homework Helper" to explain the nightly homework. Weekly spelling
words are also included in your child's homework packet.
(Our class was short agendas in the beginning of the year. The ordered
agendas have not come in yet. As soon as they arrive, our class will have
agendas.)

Aug.11-15
What a wonderful first week we had together. There were many new friends
made and a lot of learning going on. We got to know our new school and the
people that work there. We began learning cursive, idioms, and traditional
literature. It was a joy getting to know your children and I know we have a
great year ahead of us.

Your child has a Daily Report. This is a communication tool that I use to
relay your child's daily behavior and a place for you and I to communicate.
There is a comments section that both you and I can use. Check and sign this
paper each night. By signing your child's Daily Report each night you are
telling me that you have assisted your child with his/her homework and asked
about his/her day. A red star on the Daily Report means your child had a good
day. If a number appears, that is the number of the rule the child broke.
Please feel free to communicate frequently.
The announcements page on my site will feature upcoming classroom events
and activities. It may also feature any volunteering opportunities or items I
may need donated for the class. Please check it frequently to see if there
are any events you are interested in participating in.
