Accelerated
Reader:
What is AR? What will the requirements be for my child?
Accelerated Reader incentive program for reading.
Each month students will be given a goal to reach. This is based on their
average for the month. Students will read books that are on their independant
reading level which is decided by the STAR test and one on one reading tests.
We will have an AR celebration at the end of the month.
Absent:
What do I need to do if my child is absent?
If your child is absent, you may notify me by email
and I will get make-up work together for you to pick up at the end of the
day. It is very difficult to get work together in the morning because
students are coming in and I spend time getting organized for the day. Please
allow me until the end of the day. Also, there are some assignments that
cannot be made up at home. I will get your child caught up on missed
discussions when they return. If you know you are going to be out for
multiple days, please give me a few days notice to get work together. Thanks
for your help in this area.
Academic
Alert:
What does it mean when my child receives an academic alert?
Academic Alerts go during the 4 1/2 week in between
each 9 week grading period. Your child will only receive one if they have
dropped a letter grade or have an S or below. You are required to sign and
return them. If you do not receive one for your child then they are doing
fine.
Arrival:
What
time does my child need to be at school?
The school day officially begins at 7:45, but
students begin arriving around 7:15 from buses. Please do not drop your child
off earlier than 7:00 because there is no one in the office to supervise. If
your child is late they must go to the office and get a tardy pass.
ASP: How do I register my child for ASP? How much does ASP
cost? How late can my child stay in ASP?
You may register your child for ASP at any time.
The best time to do it is at Sneak-A-Peek. If you need ASP envelopes, please
let me know and I can send some home. ASP ends promptly at 6:00. They charge
a dollar a minute so don't be late.
At
Home Reading:
Will my child be required to read at home this year?
I am requiring students to read at home this year.
A reading log will go home at the beginning of each month. Research has proven
that the more a child reads the better reader they become.
Behavior Management? What do you use for behavior management?
Please see the Classroom Management link on our
webpage.
Birthdays: Can I bring something in for my child's birthday?
Our
school policy may be changing on this issue. I'll update you at Open House.
Birthday
Book Club:
What is this? How can it benefit Frey Elementary's Library?
Our school is working on building our library. The
Birthday Book Club is one way to do this. When it is your child's birthday,
he/she may purchase a book to donate to the school library in their name.
They are presented with this book on the morning T.V. announcements and are
the first ones to check it out.
Book
Orders:
Will you be doing Book Orders this year? How often? Do I have to order from
them?
I will be doing book orders this year. The first
one will go home during the first few weeks of school. When students purchase
books they build up bonus points for the class which allows me to purchase
books for free to put in our class library. I will send home about 3 during
the year. You are not required to order from them.
Celebrations: When will there be celebration parties?
We will have a Winter Holiday celebration and an
End of the Year party. I do not celebrate other holidays with parties.
Conferences:
When is conference week? When are good times to have one on one conferences
about my child?
Conference week in January this year. It will be
the only conference time planned. I can also schedule a conference during my
planning time or at the end of the day. Please understand that I cannot
conference in the morning when children are in the room. I want to be able to
give my full attention and it is difficult to do that when the students are
around. Thanks for understanding about that.
Communication:
What is the best way to communicate with the teacher?
The best way to get in touch with me is by email.
I check it at least 3 times a day. You may also call and leave a voice mail,
however, I'll answer your email much faster! You may also send notes.
Computation
Club: What
does my child have to do to be a part of this? Is this required?
This is a club to recognize students' achievements
on their mastery of the different timed tests taken. Once they pass a timed
test they are a member. They will sign their name on a chart in the hall.
They must pass each times table with 90% accuracy in 8 minutes. It is required
that they take and participate in timed tests.
Early Release Days: What are the early release dates and times?
Early release days are posted on our 3rd grade
webpage and will posted on the calendar of our webpage. Students will
dismiss 2 hours early.
Field
Trips:
What field trips will my child go on this year? How much will they cost?
3rd grade is in the process of planning the field
trips. They will be posted on the 3rd grade site as well as my site. Stay
tuned.
"Go"
Binder: What is this?
This binder is the communication between home and
school. It is a way to organize the students to make sure you know what is
going on. It goes home each night and comes back each day. It contains
plastic pocket dividers labeled to make things easy to find. It also holds
the agenda that your child will write in each day and get signed by you each
night. See the GO Binder Information letter on the parent document page.
Grades:
What is the grading system in 3rd grade? When will I see my child's graded
papers?
Grades in 3rd are E, G, S, N, & U. Please note
that Science, Social Studies, and Health grades are either O's or S's.
Hats: Can my child wear a hat to school?
Hats are not allowed unless it is a designated
"Hat" day.
Holidays: What are the dates for the major holiday vacations?
What other days will my child have off of school?
Please see the calendar
link for this information.
Homework:
Will my child have homework every night? What is the homework policy?
A homework packet will be sent home on Friday and
due the following Friday. If it isn't returned, your child will not be able
to participate in Fun Friday or Show -n- Tell. The Reading Log is a part of
the homework too, but isn't due until the end of the month.
Lunch:
What time will my child's class have lunch? Can I eat lunch with my child?
Our lunch time will be posted on our schedule
page. You are welcome to come and eat with your child any time. Please wait
for your child outside the classroom or at the lunchroom so as not to
interrupt instructional time.
Market
Days:
What is this? When will they be held? Are parents welcome?
Market Day is the day that students bring in
products they have made at home to sell to the other students. They use their
"money" from our mini-economy to buy and sell each others products. Students
have made products in the past such as bracelets, bookmarks, picture frames,
gack, and other simple ideas. We encourage parents not to spend a lot of
money but to be creative with the items around the house. Students set up
their booth (their spot at a table) with a sign that tells their product's
name and the cost. Students rotate among all of the classes. Parents are
welcome to each event. The dates of the Market Days will be posted on the 3rd
grade website for you to make plans to attend. It's a lot of fun. The
kids have a great time every year we do this.
Mastery
Club? What
is this and does my child have to participate?
This is a great way for your child to expand their
knowledge. In order to become a member they just have to answer the different
questions listed under each topic. There are links for them to find the
answers. They only have to answer ONE to start their membership. It's just a
fun way to learn more. They get to sign their name on the poster outside our
door for all to see
Room Moms:
Who are our room moms and how can I get in touch with them?
I can't wait to find out who my room mom/s will
be. I will post that soon.
Report
Card:
How often will I get my child's report card?
The report card comes home every 9 weeks.
Schedule:
How can I find out what my child's class schedule is?
Our class schedule is posted on this site.
Snack:
Will there be a snack time this year? What foods are allowed for snack?
Students will be allowed to only bring a fruit or
vegetable snack each day. Fruit snacks and fruit roll-ups are not "Fruit" so
I ask you not to send those items in with your child. Students are also
allowed to have water bottles at their seat.
Specials:
What time and days are PE, Music, and Art this year?
You can view this on our schedule
page.
Testing:
What standardized tests will my child take this year and when?
Students will take the ITBS in the fall and the
CRCT in the spring. Check the calendar page for the dates.
Timed
Tests:
Will my child take timed tests this year? What is the passing score and in
how many minutes?
In order to help students master their math facts,
they will be taking timed tests for addition, subtraction, and
multiplication. They must pass these tests twice at 8 minutes to move on to
another test. The multiplication is broken down into individual times tables
starting at the 2's and moving on up to the 10's. They must pass each one
twice at 90% to move on to the next one. If they get 100% they can go to the
next one automatically.
Volunteers:
Can I volunteer in my child's class? What opportunities are there for me to
volunteer?
Please see the volunteer
page for ways you can help in our class or at the school. I encourage
parents to be involved in any way they can. I will post a volunteer sheet at
Sneak-a-Peek and at Open House. A schedule will be posted on the volunteer
page for your convenience. Please, if you are scheduled to volunteer but
cannot make it, email me so I can make other arrangements. Thanks.
