Homework

PROCEDURES

Homework will be in the form of a weekly packet.  It comes home on Fridays and is due the following Friday.  3rd grade tried this new homework procedure last year and it worked great.  It allows you and your child to work out your own homework schedule.  We realize that life is hectic and hope that doing homework this way helps. When your child turns in their completed homework they have the chance to play HOMEWORKOPOLY.  The spelling list for the week is attached to the homework packet.  Spelling tests will be given each Friday.  View the Spelling Choices Link.  One of the homework requirements will be to choose one of these activities to do.  This will also be located in the back of the GO BINDER for reference.

In addition to the packet, students will be required to read at home each week.  I encourage students to read or be read to nightly at home. Students should record those reading minutes on their reading log. The third grade reading goal is 100 minutes a week, 400 minutes a month. Your child should record their minutes  on their reading log, and return it to school at the end of each month.  This is not optional.  I would recommend reading each night and not saving it only for the weekend. :) Make the reading log YOUR CHILD'S RESPONSIBILITY.  Please don't make up the minutes, even when things get hectic and it seems you just can't fit in the reading.  This is the honor system and remember that your child will learn to be responsible or learn to get by.  What message do you want your child to learn? I'm speaking from past years' experiences with other children.

Homework is meant to be a way for your child to INDEPENDANTLY practice skills from class.  Some students may finish quickly while others find it challenging.  Homework is not intended to teach new concepts.  If your child needs additional practice for enrichment or remediation please take advantage of the many links on our class page and the 3rd grade

CONSEQUENCES:

Students are given bonuses for returning their homework on time.  Your child will receive a fine for each page not done. The fines and bonuses are a part of our mini-economy behavior system. This includes incomplete reading logs at the end of each month.
