The summer school schedule has changed. There will be a morning session from 8:30-12:30 and there will be limited slots for an afternoon session. Summer school starts June 4 and ends June 28. Any student who failed a core class (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) will not be promoted unless they can make up the class this summer. Summer school will be on a first come first serve basis. Seniors get top priority and then rising seniors. Please call Ms. Meeks at ext. 3199 or her secretary Ms. Gensmer at ext. 3202 to register for summer school.
EOCT's will be administered during the week of June 25 to students who passed their EOCT class this past semester (American Lit, U.S. History, Math 2, Physical Science or Economics) but failed the EOCT.
GHSGT's will be administered during the week of July 16 with remediation taking place the week before. Any student who failed or did not take English, Math, Science, Social Studies EOCT's and also failed the March administration of the graduation tests will need to retest. Please refer to the graduation and promotion requirements on my website for information.
For those students planning to take classes at the college next semester, please schedule your appointments with Ms. Howe as soon as possible and don't forget to email me your college schedule.
My last official day is Friday but I will be leaving to go to a conference Thursday morning and will not be in school Thursday and Friday.
May 18, 2012
One more Newsflash about ACCEL..... I just spoke with Ms. Howe at the college. I was concerned because I could no longer see the ACCEL applications once a student registered at the college. When I submit the application with the classes students want to take, the college will only register students for those classes. If a student wants to change what they want to take, they will need to email me before they got to the college so I can edit the application. Once they are registered, the ACCEL application is submitted to Georgia Student Finance Commission and I can no longer see it.
May 18, 2012
We are going to be able to offer summer school for students who:
Need to make up a required course
Need to take one or more graduation test (s)
Passed an End of Course class but failed the EOCT
Seniors (who need to graduate this summer) will have the first priority, then juniors and then underclassmen. All coursework and test prep will be offered through E2020. There will be a morning session from 10:00 - 12:00 and an afternoon session from 1:00 - 3:00 beginning June 4 and ending June 28. There will be grad test remediation during the week of July 9. EOCT retests are the week of June 9, GHSGT retests are the week of July 16.
Summer school will be free. Students need to sign up with Ms. Meeks in GA building room 5206 by
Wednesday, May 30th.
Please encourage your students to register with Ms. Meeks if they need to attend summer school. This is a great opportunity to be on track when they enter their senior year.
May 17, 2012
We are almost there! I won't be in my office a lot between now and Tuesday because I am helping with testing and graduation. I'm glad I scheduled the ACCEL meeting on May 8 before AP testing and EOCT testing started because I was able to get over 40 applications submitted on that day. I have submitted 50 applications as of today. I will continue to submit applications as students email me what they want to take at the college next semester. Please schedule you appointment with Ms. Howe or Ms. Wessinger at the college as soon as possible because classes will fill up. You can view the fall schedule on my website under "College Credit" or go on CCGA's website. After your student is registered, I will need a copy of the schedule so I can check it aginst the ACCEL application and so that I can give it to Ms. Spires, our registrar. I will be working until the end of the month so I will still be available for a while after students are done to answer questions or give assistance.

This is a reminder about the ACCEL meeting tomorrow morning during 1st block in Ms. Carither's room (5205).
Students planning on completing their ACCEL applications tomorrow should have already done the following:
1. Registered and taken the SAT and/or ACT.
2. Applied to CCGA.
3. Mailed a transcript to CCGA (they need to get their transcript from Tammy, our secretary which includes test scores).
4. Gone on GACollege411 and completed the first part of the ACCEL application. I cannot access my part until this has been done.
5. Know which classes thay want to register for at the college next semester.
The 2 advisors for the ACCEL program will be at the meeting tomorrow and students will have an opportunity to talk with them and make an appointment to meet at the college to register for their classes. The deadline for completing the process is July 15 but I would like most applications completed by the end of the school year since I am not on contract during the summer. If students need to re-test in June to qualify they need to rquest that their scores be sent directly to the college by College Board and/or ACT and go ahead and do steps 2 - 4 above.

Registration News:
A lot of students attended the meeting about the ACCEL porgram on April 16. I hope students are submitting their applications and sending their test scores and transcripts to CCGA. If students have the first part of the ACCEL application completed before the May 8 meeting, then I can complete my part with the courses pretty quickly on that day. Students who plan to take classes at CCGA both semesters need to submit an ACCEL application both semesters. The deadline for submitting ACCEL applications for the fall semester is July 15.
A lot of students are also interested in doing an internship or apprenticeship next year. Applications need to be completed for this program. If your student is interested in this program next year and they have not submitted an application to me, please tell him/her to see me as soon as possible.
Students who plan to take Altamaha Tech classes next year need to take the COMPASS test and complete an application for Altamaha Tech. These are classes in Culinary, Cosmetology, Law Enforcement, HVAC or CAD. Dave Collins, from Altamaha Tech was here to test juniors last week but some of the students were absent. If your student would like to take a class through Altamaha Tech, she/he needs to come see me.
Finally, I am missing over 30 registration forms. I am trying to chase students down to make sure they have everything completed to participate in all the different options that are available to them next year but we are running out of time. In less than 2 weeks we'll start administering AP exams and EOCT's. I would greatly appreciate it if you could check to make sure your student has returned their registration form to me.
Upcoming events:
There is an Academy Day on Saturday, May 12 at Dobbins Air Base for any students interested in applying to one of the Military Academies. Senators Isakson and Chambliss as well as Members of Georgia's Congressional Delegation and representatives of the Academies will be there. Anyone interested in attending must register by 5:00 p.m. on April 30th at: http://isakson.senate.gov or you may call Nancy Brooks at 770-661-0099.
There will be a field trip to Gulfstream on May 1 for any students interested in a career in Aeronautical Engineering. Students who are interested, need to pick up a permission slip in the Counseling Office and get it signed by a parent and returned by Thursday, April 26.
There will be an information session on UGA's Foundation Fellows Scholarship Program on May 4 at 12:00 p.m. in room 5208. This is a highly selective scholarship awarded nationaly to 18-22 students and worth over $100,000. Glynn Academy is proud to have 3 students selected in the past 8 years, more than any other school in Southeast Georgia.
The last progress reports of the semester went home today. We're almost at the end..... I hope everyone has a strong finish!
April 13, 2013
I have planned a meeting for Monday morning for any students who are interested in taking classes at College of Coastal Georgia next year. If your student is interested in the ACCEL program, please tell him/her to report to
his/her first period teacher and then come to Room 5208 in the GA Building.
I plan on meeting with students who are ready to complete their ACCEL applications on May 8. Before they can do this, they have to have applied to the college, received their SAT and/or ACT results and mailed their transcripts to
the college. I will help them submit their ACCEL applications and then they have to meet with an advisor at CCGA and register for their classes.
Also, the admissions rep for UGA will be here on Tuesday at 9:00. Any students intending to apply to UGA in the fall should meet with her.
March 30, 2012
I hope everyone has a wonderful spring break!
March 19, 2012
The representative from Georgia Southwestern will be here during lunches tomorrow in the Career Center.
March 16, 2013
Students who took a class that had an EOCT last semester who passed the class but failed the EOCT had the opportunity to take the EOCT over again this week. If they failed the EOCT again and need to take the graduation test during the week of March 26, they will have an opportunity to have remediation next week after school. Please tell your student to check with Ms. Meeks office in room 5106 for EOCT results and information about remediation for the grad test.
Any student who failed both the Math I and Math II EOCT's, Lit 9 and American Lit EOCT's, the Biology and Physical Science EOCT's, the U.S. History EOCT, or have not had the opportunity to take any of these tests, will have to take the graduation tests during the week of March 26. Students will be notified if they have to take a test.
The tests will be administered on the following days:
Monday, March 26 - English
Tuesday, March 27 - Math
Wednesday, March 28 - Science

I hope those of you who want to hear more about dual enrollment for next year will be able to make it to the Open House at the college tonight at 6:00
March 14, 2012
A couple of things to note about registration:
* Students can choose to take classes at GA or at the college if they qualify for the ACCEl Porgram.
* We will build their GA schedule around their college schedule if they are here part time.
* Academic classes for seniors will be offered at the Career Academy, including a few science options.
* Selective colleges expect students to take a minimum of 3 years in a Foreign Language.
* Sign Language is accepted in Georgia as a Foreign Language but may not be in other states.
* Personal Fitness and Health or 3 credits of ROTC are required for graduation.
* A few academic electives to consider: Writer's workshop, Old/New Testament, French 4/5 (write it on the registration form, African American Studies , Psychology, AP Psychology, AP European History
* Make as many notes as you want on the resgistration form.
* Please make sure your student brings back their yellow copy.
* I will continue to make adjustments on schedules as requested.
I have received a lot of emails from you wanting to make appointments. I will be happy to meet with you but unfortunately, I am out of my office most of the time for the rest of this month due to registration and graduation testing which I am in charge of administering. I am making appointments to meet with parents and students in April after spring break. Please call Tammy, our secretry to schedule an appointment. She can be reached at: 267-4100, ext. 3203. In the meantime, you can email me with any questions. Thanks.

Students will also be getting progress reports on Thursday. We are now into the 2nd half of the semester.
March 6, 2012
I started registration for next year's classes yesterday. I will continue with registration until I have met with all juniors. Each junior will get a folder to bring home. The folder holds the following:
a student transcript
a check sheet that each student is supposed to complete on their own
course descriptions for all classes being offered at Glynn Academy, Golden Isles Career Academy and Altamaha Tech
information about the ACCEL program at College of Coastal Georgia,
a sheet with graduation requirements,
a sheet with teacher academic recommendations
a registration form
Students will be told what they are required to have to graduate. They will also be told about options for next year, for instance, classes at GICA, Altamaha Tech or CCGA and opportunities for internships and apprenticeships. They will complete their registration form in class and I will collect the white copy. They are supposed to bring the rest of the folder home. Any changes need to be made on the yellow copy of the registration form and signed by you on the bottom of the form. Students are then supposed to return the yellow copy of the registration form to their 1st period teacher. They need to return the form within a week so I can collect it. I will continue to make changes to schedules so don't feel like what you choose on the registration form is written in stone.
Any students interested in taking classes at CCGA next year need to follow the directions on the sheet in the folder or on my web site. It will also be helpful to attend the Open House at the college next Thursday at 6:00 in the Science Building. Any students interested in taking classes at Altamaha Tech will also be rquired to complete an Altamaha Tech application and take the COMPASS enterance test.

Tutorial on GACollege 411
During classroom guidance last semester and this semester, I showed students how to research colleges on GACollege411. All students were supposed to save colleges to their portfolios. About 1/3 of the class has done this .
There is a college matching assistant on GACollege that gives students a list of colleges that match the information they put in. These can be 2 year, 4year and technical colleges in or outside of Georgia. To do this students need to:
Log onto the website at www.GACollege411.org
Click on the "College" tab at the top of the page
Click on the "Matching Assistant" on the right side of the page
Once the list of colleges come up, students can click on them and then check out Admissions for information on what it takes to get into the school and Academics for programs and majors available at the college. By clicking on the major, you can also get information about the major, what you do with it, related fields and other colleges in or outside of Georgia that also offer that major. As students research information on the website, they should save everything to their portfolio. They can also store information about college entrance exams in their portfolio. When they are ready to apply to college, they will have all the information at their fingertips and their demographic information will automatically be transferred onto their application so they won't have to type it in. Students who have forgotten their log on information can email me.

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful break.
I encouraged students to make any schedule changes before the end of first semester so we could start second semester with few changes. My focus right now is to make sure everyone is in the right classes. I have been reviewing transcripts and schedules and making changes on schedules that were missing required classes. I have placed students that I discovered had failed a class in Study Skills to recover the class through the E2020 proram. Students will be told about a new form we have in the Counseling Office during home room tomorrow. If your child failed a class, has been placed in a class that she/he has already taken or not placed in a class needed to graduate, he/she can pick up the form in the Counseling Office, complete the information, get it signed by a parent and return it to the Counseling Office. I will call my students when I receive the schedule request form. Please make sure to let me know right away if there is an issue with a schedule. It is important that all schedules are made within a week so students don't miss a lot of class time. I will call students in order of the date I receive the schedule request form. I'm attaching the form for your convenience in case you would like to print one:
Schedule-Change-Request-Form.pdf.
Report cards will be distributed on January 10 but you can view grades on Infinite Campus now. I hope everyone has a successful second semester.... one semester away from Senior Year!

November 28, 2011
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a much needed break! There are only 18 days left in th semester. It is important that students taking EOCT classes (American Lit, U.S. History, Math 2, Physical Science) pass the EOCT's in order to avoid having to take the graduation tests in March. The Writing test results were mailed before Thanksgiving. The test will be administered again on February 29 for students who did not pass. Check with your child's teacher if your child is in danger of failing a class. Also check teacher web sites for information on assignments and study guides for finals. The web sites can be found on GA's homepage (www.glynn.k12.ga.us/GA) under Quick Links. Everyone will have to take finals or EOCT's in each class.
I am trying to take care of any necessary schedule changes for next semester now. Ms. Hummel, our registrar is retiring December 1 and I wanted to get most changes taken care of before she leaves. Our new registrar will be Ms. Julie Spires. She is coming from the Counseling Department at Glynn Middle and I know our students, parents and staff will love her, even though we will miss Ms. Hummel. Students were given their schedules for the entire year on the first day of school so hopefully any changes needed, have been taken care of or will be taken care of before next semester begins. Please email me if you have any questions about your child's schedule.
I will be meeting with English classes to do classroom guidance beginning November 30. I will share information about testing, graduation requirements, preparing for the senior year and, we will research post secondary options using GA College 411. I will meet with students taking English next semester early next semester. I will have a parent information session on Monday, December 12 at 6:00 pm in the Media Center. Please read the attached flyer for details.

Progress reports will be sent home with students tomorrow. This is the last progress report before the end of the semester. So... students have around 4 weeks left to get their grades up where they want them.
The PSAT and PLAN results won't be here until right before the break. I will meet with students who took one or both of these tests in January to interpret the reports and give students information on studying for the SAT/ACT.
We have still not received the results of the Writing Graduation Test.
I wanted to pass on an opportunity for a Youth Scholarship Opportunity at UGA this summer. It's an internship program offered by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Science. The program runs from June 4 through July 14. This is a paid internship opportunity. The application deadline in January 31 and students find out if they have been selected by April 30th. Check the link below for more information and the application.

GA College 411 was created to help students succeed in high school and to prepare for life after high school, whether it is college or the work force.By completing the "Guideways" on www.GACollege411.org, students get all the information they need and the steps they need to follow each year until they graduate. Tips include: improving reading comprehension skills, writing a paper, test taking skills and test preparation for the EOCT's, GHSGT's, SAT's, ACT's, self inventories, resume writing, career exploration and college exploration to name a few. Students created accounts during classroom guidance last year but only 3% have done anything since. I sent another email earlier today to the students who have accounts, to tell them to how important it is to complete their Guideways by the end of their junior year. I can track what they are doing and answer any questions they may have.We will also work on this during classroom guidance this year. New students need to log on and create accounts. I have access to the account names so I told your students to email me if they have forgotten their account name. Once they have their account name, they can send an email to get their password if they have forgotten it. Parents can also create accounts and I noticed that there has been some activity from parents. As you know, the junior year is the last year to prepare for the college research and application process and GACollege is a wonderful and free tool available to you and your students. Please encourage your students to use it and to check their email.

This is a reminder about the NACAC National College Fair at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in Jacksonville from 9:00 - 1:00 on Saturday, Oct. 15. To register for the fair and find out more about the colleges that will be represented, the workshops that will be available and the the counseling resource center on site go to:
www.nacacnet.org/ncfstudent.
I created a batch today for all the students who created GACollege411 accounts with me last year during my classroom guidance visits. I can now email all my students at the addresses they provided when they created the accounts. If they have changed their email addresses, they will need to do so on their account information. I sent an email out today.

There are 2 scholarship competitions I want you to tell your students about:
1. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Voice of Democracy Patriotic Audio Essay Competition - Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year's theme is: "Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?" The recording must be 3-5 minutes. Entries are judged at the local, district, state and national level with the top essay receiving a scholarship of $30,000. The deadline for submitting the essays and CD's to me is November 1. I have brochures in my office for students who would like to take advantage of this opportunity.
2. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is an opportunity for schools to celebrate volunteerism. Students who are active in their community in grades 5-12 can compete. One student per school is selected. Students needs to complete the application form an return it to me by
November 1. The application form is available online at:
http://spirit.prudential.com or www.nassp.org/spirit.. State honorees receive $1000. National honorees receive $5000 and a $5000 grant for a nonprofit charitable organization of their choice. I have more details in my office.
I hope your students will take advantage of these opportunities. They should also start to research scholarships now for college. I have several resources on my website and GACollege also has a scholarship search. Students complete a profile and they will get a list of scholarships they are eligible to apply for.

Testing seemed to go prettey well today. Make-up testing is tomorrow. I will be out of my office again all day tomorrow (in fact this is my first time on my computer today) and I will also be out of the office all day Friday. Please continue to email me instead of calling and I'll get back with you as soon as I can.
The University of Alabama rep will be here tomorrow from 11:30 to 1:30.
September 23, 2011
The Georgia Graduation Writing Test will be administered on Tuesday, September 27. This is the one remaining graduation test that all juniors have to take. It is very important that all students are present for the test on Tuesday.
Class of 2013 students only need to take the other graduation tests if they have failed both EOCT's in all four subject areas (English, Math, Science and Social Studies) as I stated in my "Welcome Back" letter on my homepage. We will be on the assembly bell schedule on Tuesday and the test will be administered during an extended 2nd block from 9:25 - 11:30. This is a timed test but students have plenty of time to read, outline, write a rough draft, revise and copy their written work onto the answer document. It is also very important for students to follow these steps and not to rush through the test so that they can have a paper that clearly states what they want to get across. Please make sure your student (s) is well rested and fed before the test.
The best way to reach me until the graduation testing is over is by email. You can even click on the mailbox on my homepage. I am not in my office to answer the phone or check messages. Being out of my office for 3 weeks in September has made it difficult to keep up with communication but I will get back with you!
September 18, 2011
Don't forget the State of the School Address on Monday night at 6:00 in the auditorium.
Please make sure you read the "Welcome Back Class of 2013 Letter" located on my homepage for information on credits, graduation requirements, graduation tests and college admission testing.
September 9, 2011
4 1/2 week Progress Reports will be sent home with students on Tuesday. Please make sure you check the Teacher Web Pages for assignments and email or call them with any concerns. The web pages and staff directory can be found on Glynn Academy's homepage at: www.glynn.k12.ga.us/GA.
August 31, 2011
This is a reminder that the Georgia Southern rep will be in the Career Center tomorrow from 11:30 to 1:30 and the Mercer rep will also be here tomorrow from 11:30 to 12:30. If your student is interested in learning more about either one of these schools, tell her/him to come to the Counseling Office during that time tomorrow.
Have a nice week end!
September 8, 2011
Upcoming Events:
September 12 at 6:00 - "State of the School Address" in the Auditorium
Any parent that attends will get a homework pass for their child.
September 16 from 11:00 to 12:00 - Amy Clines, Georgia Tech Rep in the Career Center
September 27 - Georgia High School Graduation Writing Test Main Administration for Juniors
In case you haven't already discovered, the Infinite Campus Portal is open!
Some of the juniors are getting mixed up with what the sophomores are supposed to do for the PSAT. The state is paying for sophomores to take the PSAT. Juniors will have to pay to take it. As I mentioned in my letter posted on my web site, and which students received on their first day of school, juniors will need to come to the Counseling Office to register for the PSAT. We are not going to start signing up juniors and taking checks until Oct. 3 just like we did last year. I'm not sure what the cost will be this year. I did tell Dr. Hall, who ordered the test this year to order 100 extra for juniors. I will send a newsflash to let you know when we are ready to start registering students and to confirm the cost. It will probably be around $15.00 but since I did not order the tests this year, I'll have to look up the cost.
August 30, 2011
The Glynn Academy PTSA is seeking students to serve on the Board of the Glynn Academy PTSA.
Below, are the links for the letter from PTSA explaining what they are looking for and the application. This is a great leadership opportunity for juniors!
student-board-letter.docx
student-board-application.docx
I also have applications for students to serve on State Superintendent Dr. John Barge's Student Advisory Counsil. Interested students need to come see me ASAP to get the application. They will need to compete the application, answer 2 questions on a seperate sheet, get signatures and the application must be received by September 6. Students need to see me this week in order to get the application completed and mailed next week!
A few college reps have already set up appointments to visit us. We try to schedule visits during lunches in the Career Center next to the Counseling Office. I have posted the dates on the junior calendar on the website. Making contact with the college reps is very important because they will be the ones reviewing your student's application.

August 11, 2011
I hope it was a good first day back for everyone! Students should have brought home a bright pink letter from me today. They were supposed to get them in homeroom this morning. The letter covers important information for juniors. I have also posted the letter on my website under the icon named "Welcome Back Class of 2013" for parents.
Most requested schedule changes were made by today. Students who need a change because they are in a wrong class need to make sure they come to the Counseling Office as soon as possible to fill out an appointment slip. I will start calling in students tomorrow who requested an appointment. We try to accomodate student needs as much as possible but cannot accomodate specific requests like a lunch time unless there is a medical reason. Lunch is controlled by the 3rd period class teacher. All schedule changes need to be completed within a week.
August 8, 2011
I am booked solid through Wednesday. I am trying to respond to emails and phone calls but due to the volume and my back to back appointments, it may take me a couple of days to get back with you. If your student did not make it in for an appointment, I will call them in when they have filled an appointment slip in the Counseling Office.
August 5, 2011
Hi again, If your student's schedule does not get changed before Thursday, he/she will need to come to the Counseling Office and fill out an appointment slip. I will call the student to make the change.
August 5,
I am trying to make as many schedule changes as possible before school starts. It is best to make the changes in person because classes are full and one change can lead to another. I am pretty booked with appointments until Wednesday afternoon. Please call Ms. Cirmotich at 267-4100, ext. 3203 to make an appointment and hopefully she can fit you in before Thursday.
August 4, 2011
We cannot make any more schedule changes today because we ar getting ready for Open House. I am already booked all day tomorrow. Ms. Cirmotich will be in the Counseling Office this afternoon to set up appointments or you can call her at ext. 3203 to make an appointmnet for next week. I am already all booked up for tomorrow. We are also registering new students as they come in so it will take a while to get to everybody.
August 4, 2011
The Infinite Campus portal is open and you can view schedules.
Any schedule changes made today will not be available for Open House tonight. You will need to follow your original schedule.
August 1, 2011
I have added an icon on my home page and named it "Welcome Letter from Dr. Spence." If you click on the icon and then on the link, you will be able to see his letter. Lists of students and homeroom teachers for the class of 2013 will be posted in the GA Building on the doors leading out to Mansfield St. (behind the auditorium). Once you go to your student's home room, you will be able to pick up his/her schedule. You may come anytime on Thursday between 4:00 and 6:00. Dr. Spence will be doing a presentation at 4:30 and again at 5:30 in the auditorium. Schedules will be posted on Infinite Campus on August 10.
July 31, 2011
Welcome back to the junior year! I hope everyone had an excellent summer. I have updated the web site with the 2011-2012 calendar, SAT/ACT Registration and Testing Schedule. I will include college fairs and visits from college reps on the calendar, as well as any other important events that come up so make sure to check it on a regular basis.
Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August 4th from 4:00 - 6:00.
I will be returning to school tomorrow and will send another newsflash when I have more information about Open House and when schedules will be posted on Infinite Campus.
June 8, 2011
If your student was not recommended for an Honors or AP Enlish class but would like to be placed in one of these classes, your student must come take a placement test to determine eligibility. The test will be given on Tuesday, June 21 at 9:00am in the GA building (building attached to auditorium) in room 5103. The doors on the Mansfield Street side will be open. The test should last an hour. Please bring a pencil. If you are interested in this opportunity, please confirm with Ms. Josie Love, Assistant Principal at josie.love@glynn.k12.ga.us by Friday, June 10th.
I will be returning to school and will be available for appointments on August 3rd. I wish you and your families a wonderful and safe summer!
May 25, 2011
Check out Glynn Academy's home page for important announcements including summer reading assignments. You may also find more information on the teacher websites. You can access those on the homepage if you click on Quick Links or Academics at the top.

This e-mail from Dr. Spence sent on Friday will hopefully clarify any questions you may have about exam exemptions:

2. Students may not exempt EOCTÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Ã'Ã'¢ÃÆ'Ã'¢'Ã'Ã'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'¯ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'¿ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'½s.
3. If students are eligible for the exam exemption based on the criteria set forth, then they will not have to attend that single class on the day of the exam. The teachers will not mark an exempt student absent on that day in the exempt class.
4. We will have school the entire week. All student absences (except the exempt class period) will be marked as such.
5. Students should retain the signed exam exemption form and it will serve as the student note to leave campus. They will not have to check out if they have the signed form.
So summarize: Students who received an exemption form from their teacher are exempt from that block only. They will be counted absent if they don't attend their other classes.
May 12, 2011
Well, done with AP exams and now on to EOCT's! They start next week with Economics for seniors. Ms. Belechak and I are spending all our time in the testing room. I am leaving for a meeting out of town today and will return to my office/testing room on May 17. I will be doing EOCT teacher training on May 17 and 18 and then EOCT's start on May 19. The best way to communicate with me is through e-mail.
Please remind your students again that if they want an upgrade for an English class next year, they need to talk to their English teacher. For all other upgrades they need to get a form from the registrar's office. If your child is planning on taking any Altamaha Tech classes next year (Culinary Arts, Cosmotology, Law Enforcement, Architecture or HVAC), they need to complete the application materials they were given when they took the ASSET test.and turn them in to Ms. Cirmotich by next Wednesday. We will test the remaining students that did not take the test when in was administered next week.

Parent Involvement Opportunity
Glynn Academy needs one parent to serve on the Site Council. The
Site Council is made up of 2 business representatives, 2 parents, 2
teachers and Dr. Spence. The Council is a policy-level advisory body
that makes recommendations on school improvement to the principal,
the superintendent and the school board. You may e-mail Julie Tharpe
if you are interested at: julietharpe@bellsouth.net. A representative will
be voted on during Honors Night on May 17.
You can also e-mail Julie if you would like to join PTSA.
May 1, 2011
I will be out of the office 8 of the next 10 days administering AP exams. The best way to communicate with me is through e-mail. If you have an academic concern, you can contact Ms. Drew, assistant principal for instruction. I will try to respond to your e-mails as quickly as I can.

Note: The conference room is accessed through the main doors of the GA building by the attendance/nurse office. Go up the large marble stairway in the lobby area and turn to the left. Go up a few more stairs and you will be in the conference room.
2. Bring at least two #2 sharpened pencils (no sharpening in the testing room!) and at least two black or blue ball point pens.
3. You should plan on each test session taking at least four hours.
4. If you are taking two tests on the same day, plan to bring a sack lunch and eat quickly so that we can begin our afternoon test on time.
5. Students who work in the afternoon should tell employers that they cannot report to work until 5:30 or 6:00. Do not plan on walking out of the test early to go to work.
6. Make arrangements for transportation if you have an afternoon test. Depending on the start time (between 12 and 1) you could be here as late as 4:30 or 5:00.
7. A fee is charged if you sign up for a test and donÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Ã'Ã'¢ÃÆ'Ã'¢'Ã'Ã'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'¯ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'¿ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'½t show up for it.
8. If you have one AP test on any given day, you will be SSA for the entire day. All books, bookbags, purses, cell phones (off), food, etc. will be stored away from the desks, and students will not be allowed to get to these items once the test has started. . . not even during the break.
9. Students taking the calculus, physics, and/or statistics exams should bring the appropriate calculator. A graphing calculator is used for the calculus exams. A graphing calculator with statistical capabilities is expected for the AP statistics exam and a scientific or graphing calculator is permitted for the physics B exam.
April 25, 2011
Progress reports will be distributed during 1st block tomorrow. This is tha last progress report before finals.
April 21, 2011
I have entered electives for all sophomores except for the students who missed their appointments that I'll be seeing tomorrow. English classes are also back on the schedules. You can view schedules on Infinite Campus until 1:00 tomorrow.
I have not made any upgrades on academic classes. There is ayellow sheet in your child's folder with English department criteria. Students who want to be upgraded will need to see their English teacher and take a test. For all other subjects, students still need to see me for an upgrade form.
I won't know what schedules will look like until after Ms. Hummel completes the master schedule. I am forwarding any requests you make to her.
April 20, 2011
Another newsflash from me! I found out some information today after speaking with Mr. Felton and Ms. Carter and wanted to pass it on.
1. Students who are in Acc. Math 2 have already done Math 3 so they need to go on to Acc. Math 3.
They can then either take AP Statistics or AP Calculus A/B and BC in their senior year.
2. Students who want to double up in math next year can take Acc. Math 3 and AP Statistics and then take AP Calculus A/B and BC in their senior year.
3. Students who are in Math 2 will take Math 3 next year and Math 4 in their senior year. If these students want to double up in math, they would take Math 3 and Acc. Math 3 next year. They could then take an AP class in their senior year.
4. Students who are in Math 2 with Support will take Math 3 with Support. That will complete their math requirement.
5. There is not Acc. Math 4
6. I asked Ms. Carter about having Acc. Math 3 and Analytical Physics as an A/B Block year-long. She said students need the Acc. Math 3 before they do the Physics and suggested that they take the Math 1st semester and Physics 2nd semester.
I think I mentioned before that any upgrades in English have to be approved by the English teacher. For any other upgrades, students will need to get a form from me and get it signed by you.
I am registering my last 2 groups tomorrow and then making up all the students who were absent during their scheduled times on Friday. I am trying to return e-mails and phone calls as soon as possible. If I miss you, please e-mail me again.
As I get the yellow registration forms back I am making any changes that I see. Please send these in with your child by Friday. After next week I'll be moving on to AP testing and then EOCT's so I will be out of my office most of May! It's hard to believe another year is almost over.
April 19, 2011
Most of you should have received your children's folders by now. I have a few left to do on Thursday and then the students who missed their scheduled time to make up. I wanted to make you aware of a problem that came up in case you have questions about it. All the Comparative Lit and Honors Comparative Lit courses were removed from Infinite Campus. They will be re-entered once new numbers are assigned for those classes. In the meantime, you can check the sheet you got in your child's folder with teacher recommendations. The 112610 class is the Honors class and the 112600 class is the non-Honors class.
Please don't forget to send in the signed yellow registration form to school with your child.
The ACCEL program at the College of Coastal Georgia is tonight at 6:00. The requirements for qualifying for the ACCEL program are a 3.0 GPA and 500 on the SAT Reading and 500 on the Math. If your child is considering taking classes at the college next year through the ACCEL program, he/she will need to take the SAT soon.
April 18, 2011
My goal is to have all the courses entered for my class by the end of this week. Therefore, I won't have time for appointments until next week. The Infinite Campus Portal will be open for you and your student(s) to see the schedules and make any adjustments through 1:00 p.m. on Friday. There are still some problems with numbers for some courses (Comparative Lit, Honors Comparative Lit, Journalism, French 4, etc) but as long as I have what your student wants on the registration sheet, I can put these classes in once I get the numbers.
Once Ms. Hummel has the registration sheets, she will be able to proceed with the master schedule but I'm not sure when it will be ready. Schedules will be mailed home during the summer and we can still make some changes at the beginning of the semester.
The academic classes cannot be changed on Infinite Campus. If a student wants to take something other than what was recommended for English, she/he must speak with the English teacher. Only the English teacher can make the change. For all other class upgrades, students will need to get a form from me and take it home to get it signed. I won't be handing those out until after next week. I know there is a lot to think about because you are not only thinking about next year's schedule but the senior year schedule as well. All thsi should fall into place much easier when we go through this process next year. It is also good practice for your students.
April 14, 2011
For those students interested in the ACCEL program (enrolling in college courses next school year to achieve both college credit and high school credit), there will be an Information Session next Tuesday!
ACCEL Information Session
At the College of Coastal Georgia
Tuesday 4/19/11 at 6:00 PM
Academic Building - Room 101
Please send an email or call Ms. Stacy Howe to let her know if you will be attending (inform if student or parent or both will attend).
Email: showe@ccga.edu
Phone: 279-5814
I am about half way done with registration. Please ask your student if she/he has already seen me so you can review the information with her/him. Make any notes or changes on the registration sheet, sign it and return the yellow copy to the 1st block teacher. If your student has already seen me, I would like the registration form back on Monday. Those students seeing me next week will need to get their registration forms back by the end of next week. I am supposed to have everything entered in the computer by next Friday so Ms. Hummel can start working on the master schedule. I would like to keep schedule changes to a minimum but I can still make changes after I have entered the classes.
April 11, 2011
I will be meeting with sophomores during 1st block this week and next to register for next year's electives.
Each student will get a folder with a registration sheet, a transcript, a check sheet, a sheet with teacher recommended academic classes and information on electives available at Glynn Academy, Brunswick High and the Golden Isles Career Academy. The academic classes have already been entered on Infinite Campus based on teacher recommendations. Students will have the opportunity to enter their own electives. Each student will complete their registration sheet during class with me. They will bring it home to get it signed and they need to return the signed yellow copy to their first period teacher.
Don't forget the parent night tomorrow at 6:00 in the GA Auditorium.
April 1, 2011
Have a wonderful Spring Break! Don't forget I will be having my Parent Night when we return on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:00.
March 23, 2011
A representative from Herff Jones will be in the auditorium this Friday at 10:45 to speak to students in the class of 2013 about class rings.
March 22, 2011
Students will receive 9 week progress reports during homeroom on Thursday.
Only 9 weeks left in the sophomore year!
March 15, 2011
I am doing classroom guidance in English classes this week. I am talking to students about: college entrance exams, (when to take them and how to register), transcripts, creating resumes, registration for next year, resources on my website. They are also creating accounts on GAcollege411 , exploring all the resources available on that website and investigating career interests.
Don't forget to send a check if your son/daughter is taking any AP exams. Checks are due to Ms. Drew by March 18.
AP scores are released during the summer after students have graduated , and colleges use these results primarily for class placement. AP exams are scored from 1 - 5 with 3 and above being considered as passing. Colleges vary with which scores they award credit; some give credit for only 4's or 5's while others like UGA give credit for 3's, 4's and 5's. You can look up this information on College Board. The most competitive colleges may ask for AP results on their applications. They also expect students to take a minimum of 3 SAT II Subject tests. Three tests can be taken during one SAT administration day and must be scheduled on a different day than the SAT I. The best time to take SAT II's is at the end of the junior year when students have taken a few AP classes and the material is fresh. Colleges usually like to see an English and Math score; the third test can be a subject that the student excells in.
March 3,
If your child has registered for one or more AP exams, they have until March 18 to bring their check(s) to Ms. Drew's secratary, Ms. Gensmer. She is located in the GA building, next to the school store. If your child did not get the chance to register for a test or had an AP class last semester and wants to register for that test, he/she can also do that in
Ms. Drew's office.
I am chaperoning the Beta Club trip and will not be in the office tomorrow. I'll be back on Monday.
March2, 2011
There are a couple of opportunities for your students that I want to make you aware of .
1. Students are invited to enter a contest to attend the Annual Tables of Content Dinner. I brought the flyers with this information to Mr. GallagherÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Ã'Ã'¢ÃÆ'Ã'¢'Ã'Ã'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'¯ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'¿ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'½s class on Monday. They are selecting and paying for 8 students to attend the dinner which will be held at the King and Prince on Thursday, March 24 and will feature author Tina McElroy Ansa. Students need to write a 200-300 word letter to an imaginary supervisor to be excused from work to attend the event and a 200-300 word letter to their family explaining why they want to attend the function. The letters need to be mailed to:
The Social Justice Team of the Unitarian Universalist of Coastal Georgia, P.O. Box 1056, Brunswick, GA 31521. The deadline is March 15. Please include contact information with your letters.
2. I have applications in my office for students to become a member of the United Community Bank Junior Board of Directors. This is a wonderful leadership and community service opportunity. Monthly breakfast meetings are held from 7:15 ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Ã'Ã'¢ÃÆ'Ã'¢'Ã'Ã'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'¯ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'¿ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'Ã'¢Ã¢'Ã'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ 'ÃÆ'Æ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬ ''ÃÆ'Æ'Æ''ÃÆ'Æ''ÃÆ''Ã'Ã'½ 8:30 a.m. at the bank downtown and students get SSA for attending. Applications are available in the Counseling Office (Ms. Cirmotich has them) and they are due to me by March 11. Students must have a minimum core GPA of 3.0 and have excellent school attendance. Students selected to the Board are ambassadors for United Community Bank and will plan and participate in community events and fundraisers.
I had to change my parent night to Tuesday, April 12 during the week that I will be going into classrooms for registration. I will also be visiting English classes the week of March 14.
Feburary 14, 2011,
Happy Valentine's Day!
I wanted to pass on some information on a summer program at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. This program is called the Sewanee Environmental Institute Pre-college Field Studies Experience.
For more information on the program, cost and application go to:

February 11, 2011
4 1/2 week progress reports will be distributed to students during 1st block on Tuesday, Feb. 15. We have upper classmen who tutor. Let me know if you think your student would benefit from tutoring.
February 7, 2011
The week of February 7 is National School Counselors Week and I wanted to take this
opportunity to tell you how happy I am to be the counselor for the class of 2013.
I am planning a parent night at the end of March to discuss registration for next year
and what to plan for during the junior year. Registration will be during the week after we
return from Spring break.
February, 4, 2011
Thirty-six students did not make it to the meeting this morning. I have a workshop in Savannah and will not be here on Monday therefore, I have scheduled to meet with these students Tuesday morning in the auditorium at 8:30. I have sent another email to the teachers. The students who did come today were given the test report, test booklet a student handout and a parent handout. Have a nice week-end.
February 3, 2011
I am meeting with students who took the PSAT and ACT to give them their reports and interpret the results
tomorrow morning (Friday) in the auditorium at 8:30. I will be giving each student handouts along with their report, on preparing for next year's PSAT and the SAT. I will also give them a letter and handout to bring home for parents with information about College Quick Start, a free online college, testing and career planning guide
available to all students who have taken the PSAT. I have emailed the teachers the list of students they are
supposed to send tomorrow morning but, it would be really helpful if you can also remind your student to go
to the auditorium tomorrow morning so they won't miss the information.
January 20, 2011
We are a week into the new semester and the period for schedule changes is over. We cut off schedule changes at a week because a lot of material is covered in class in that amount of time, especially with block scheduling.
It is also difficult for teachers to adjust to new students in their classroom on a daily basis and have to catch them up. The only changes we can make at this point are: if a student failed a class and needs to make it up or if a student has been placed in a class they have already taken. Please let me know as soon as possible if that is the case. I have made most of the necessary changes and schedule change requests, and have a handful to complete tomorrow. If you emailed or called and your student's schedule has not been changed, please let me know.
January 17, 2011
Report cards go home tomorrow.
January 13, 2011
Welcome to the new semester! We have changed hundreds of schedules and classes are full. There are not many options available at Glynn Academy for electives but there are some at the Career Academy for students who have room in their schedules. I will be getting a failure report today and will change schedules for any students who failed classes and need a change. If your student is in a wrong class ( for instance one they have already had), please tell them to fill out a slip in the Counseling Office and I will call them. We can not change lunches. Lunch is determined by the 3rd period class. Thanks for being patient as I try to get everyone in the right place.
December 21, 2010
At last our break is here! I hope you will have some wonderful family time together. I'm looking forward to spending time with my kids. We're off to Universal tomorrow. My son is home from UGA and my daughter has returned from working in Argentina and will meet us in Orlando tomorrow.
Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy 2011!
December 19, 2010
I hope the EOCT's went well last week. I will still be out of my office because the answer documents have to be scanned and all materials have to be counted and packed.
I won't be able to make any schedule changes until we return in January.
December 6, 2010
End of Course Tests (EOCT's) will be administered during the week of December 13-17. Each test will be given over a 2 day period. Students in grades 9-12 will take Biology, Physical Science, U.S. History and Economics on Monday and Tuesday. They will take
Lit 9, American Lit, Math I and Math II on Wednesday and Thursday.
Make ups will be on Friday.
The EOCT's are critical. Each test counts towards 15% of the total grade. Even more important, the state will be replacing Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT's) n English, Math, Science and Social Studies with EOCT's. This will start next year and may mean that if students pass EOCT's this year, they may not have to take GHSGT's next year. Please stress the importance of the EOCT's with your children.
Overseeing the administration of over 1700 EOCT's is a large undertaking; from counting test booklets, preparing answer documents and training teachers to scanning answer documents, counting, and packing test materials. Since I am in charge of EOCT's, I will be away from my office and spending most of my day in the test center for the next 10 days. It will take me a bit longer to return phone calls and e-mails but I will try to get back with you in the evenings. I am pretty much up to date with schedule changes. I will need to take care of any new schedule changes after the holidays. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions or if your child is failing a class. Teacher web sites and e-mails can be accessed on the Glynn Academy home page by clicking on "Quick Links."
November 30, 2010
I got a clarification on when the exam exemption form will be due. I sent it to you so you could see what it looks like and what the requirements are. Teachers will also explain this to their students when they give them the form. The form will be due back to 1st period teachers. If students are not in school on Jan. 7 they don't have to come just to return the form. They can give it to their 1st period teacher when they come back to school.

The Hugh O'Brien Leadership Program (HOBY) is an opportunity for sophomores
to learn leadership skills and participate in service activities. Only one sophomore
and one alternate are selected from each participating high school.
The HOBY conference takes place at Georgia Southwestern from June 3-5, 2011.
Glynn Academy pays the fee for attending the conference. I am attaching information
about the program and a short application. Any interested students need to turn the application
in to me by Dec. 2
HOBY-Application-2011.doc
Progress reports will go home Tuesday, Nov. 23. There are 4.5 weeks left in the semester. Please contact your child't teacher if he/she is failing a class at this time. If you would like to schedule a conference with all teachers, you may contact our secretary, Ms. Cirmotich at ext. 3203 to get it scheduled.

The News Flash feature should be fixed for those of you who were having trouble seeing the most up to date entries. It was working on most browsers but not on Firefox.
November 8, 2010
The PLAN will be administered this Saturday. As with the PSAT, students will need to report to the Science Building by 8:00. Students who would like to take the PLAN this Saturday will need to come to the Counseling Office by Nov. 10 with a check for $13.00 made out to Glynn Academy and give our secretary their name.
Students will be finished with testing between 11:30-12:00. The PLAN has a Career Inventory as well as sections on English, Math, Reading and Science. You can find further information about the PLAN/ACT on my webpage under FAQ's.
November 2, 2010
I am going to the Georgia School Counselors Conference tomorrow and will be out of the office Thursday and Friday.
October 27, 2010
Students will report to their home rooms at 8:20 tomorrow morning to receive their nine week progress reports. I have put together a packet of information for each student which will be distributed by home room teachers at that time. Failure letters for anyone who is failing one or more classes are also being mailed tomorrow.
October 26, 2010
I have attached the list of colleges that will be at the PROBE College Fair on Thursday.
-2010-Probe-Brunswick-Fair.doFallcx
Also, I have added some new icons on my website:
Class of 2013 Graduation Requirements, Grading and the Bell Schedules.
October 25, 2010
It's not too early to start exploring colleges and students will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from colleges in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and South Carolina at the PROBE College Fair at Glynn Place Mall on Thursday, October 28 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. College Admissions Counselors travel during the months of September and October visiting schools and attending college fairs. In November, they start reviewing college applications. These representatives keep track of student contacts so the more contacts that students make with a college that they are interested in, the more favorable it is for the student.
October 22, 2010
Today is the end of the 9 week grading period. Nine week progress reports will be sent home with students next Thursday. This year, the 1st nine week grades and 2nd nine week grades will not be averaged. The grades throughout the semester will be cumulative. Final grades will be posted on transcripts at the end of 1st semester in January (except for year-long classes).
If you go to Glynn Academy's homepage and click on "Staff", then click on "Schedule and Assignments", and finally click on "Course Grade Weights", you can see how tests/quizzes, assignments, etc. are weighted in each subject for semester grades.
October 14, 2010
Due to unforeseen circumstances (my mother died Sept. 20 and I had surgery Oct. 8) I have missed 2 weeks of school in less than a month. I returned today and I expect the rest of the school year to go much more smoothly. I have tried to keep on top of emails and phone calls. However, I may have missed or accidentally deleted an email (oops) so I wanted to let you know that I am not ignoring you. If I have not responded to an email, please email me again. I should be caught up with my correspondence next week. Thanks for your patience.
PSAT News
Students registered to take the PSAT this Saturday need to report to the Science Building by 8:00 a.m. Student names and room assignments will be posted on the doors of the Science Building. Students should be finished testing between 11:30 and 12:00 so I think it would be best to arrive at GA for pick up by 11:45. All students need to make sure they have 2 sharpened #2 pencils and a scientific or graphing calculator. Details about the PSAT are in the Student Guide that all students should have picked up in the Counseling Office. We will probably receive test results sometime in December and I will distribute them to students in January.
I have ordered 100 PLAN exams. If you would like for your child to take the PLAN on
Nov. 13, please send him/her to the Counseling Office with a check made out to Glynn Academy for $13.00.
October 3, 2010
Please make sure your student (s) have picked up a PSAT preparation guide from the Counseling Office and confirmed with our secretary, Ms. Cirmotich if they are planning on taking the PSAT on Oct. 16 (if they haven't done so already). Oct. 5 is tha last day that they can register.
September 27, 2010
I got back this morning and found out that the state is indeed paying for the PSAT for sophomores. We ordered 200 tests based on the response we got from students who wanted to take it. Therefore all sophomores will not be administered the test; only those that registered for the test. If your student registered for the PSAT, please tell them to come by the Counseling Office to pick up their preparation booklet and we will check off their name on our list.
September 26, 2010
We will start collecting money for the PSAT on Monday. Please make checks for $16 payable to Glynn Academy and bring to Ms. Cirmotich in the Counseling Office.
September 20, 2010
4.5 week Progress Reports are being sent home with students tomorrow.
I will be out of the office for the remainder of the week. If you have an academic concern, please contact our Assistant Principal for Instruction, Michelle Drew. Her extension is 3199.

Tomorrow is the last day that students can request a schedule change for first semester. I will see all students who have already requested changes and any new students that come in tomorrow.
The PSAT will be administered on Saturday, Oct. 16. The cost is $16.00.
The PLAN will be administered on Saturday, Nov. 13. The cost is $13.00.
We will start collecting money for the PSAT in the Counseling Office on
Oct. 1 and for the PLAN on Nov. 1. Please refer to the FAQ's icon on my website for information and comparison of the 2 tests.
Also, please refer to the Counseling icon on my website for information on scheduling an appointment.
August 19, 2010
I hope everyone had a great first day. I've already met a few of my students
and have registered over 30 new students this week. There are a few more schedule changes to be made. We were still registering new students today and I hope I can get with Ms. Hummel tomorrow to take care of the rest of the schedule changes. Please tell your students if they need a change because they are in the wrong class, to come to the Counseling Office and fill out a slip to see me. We are not changing A/B days or lunches.
Please take a look at the other icons on my website to see procedures for scheduling appointments under "Counseling", taking the SAT/ACT under "FAQ", reporting absences under "Health", etc.
In the past, the state has payed for sophomores to take the PSAT. This year, since the state is not paying, taking the PSAT is voluntary. I encourage sophomores to take the PSAT for practice and to also take the PLAN which is the pre-ACT and is designed for 10th graders. The dates for these tests are on my testing schedule. If you would like for your student to take one or both of these tests please email me as soon as possible. My order will be based on your response.
August 17, 2010
We will not be handing out schedules in the GA Building during Open House as we have in the past. All students are supposed to go to their homeroom classroom first. If you are not sure who your homeroom teacher is, all homerooms are posted on the cafeteria doors.
On Thursday, students need to report to their homerooms first. Any schedule changes that were not completed by 2:00 today will not be ready for Open House today but will be given to homeroom teachers by Thursday.
August 16, 2010
Open House at the Golden Isles Career Academy will be from 3:00-5:00 tomorrow at GICA. Glynn Academy's Open House is 4:00-6:00. If you have a student attending GICA, you may want to go there first and then come to GA for the 2nd session of Open House. The Open House schedule is included in the letter mailed home with schedules. You can also find it on Glynn Academy's homepage on the top right hand corner.
I have updated the Sophomore Year Schedule, SAT/ACT Information, and Testing Calendar on my website.
August 12, 2010
I have tried to make most of the schedule change requests I have received to date and have made over 50 changes this week. I emailed most of you of the changes but you may want to check on Infinite Campus to see what the new schedules look like.
August 11, 2010
I realized from your phone calls that I reversed the numbers for Tammy's extension. Her extension is 3203 not 2303 (so sorry). I have been booked all day for the past 2 days so it's been difficult for me to take care of your email requests. I have a meeting scheduled with Ms. Hummel tomorrow afternoon to make those changes. I do have some time open on my schedule Friday and Tuesday afternoon if you need to make an appointment. Please call Tammy and she will set it up. I am trying to return phone calls as quickly as I can but it will probably take a day before I can get back to you. In the meantime, you can also email me. I usually try to answer my emails from home at night.
August 9, 2010
Welcome Class of 2013!
I will be returning to Glynn Academy tomorrow, August 10. Ms. Adams in the Freshman Academy has been making appointments for counselors so I'm sure I'll be seeing some of you very shortly. If you would like to make an appointment to meet with me before school starts, you may contact Tammy Cirmotich, our secretary starting tomorrow; her extension is 2303.
Those of you who emailed me earlier in the summer, I submitted your requests to Ms. Hummel before I went out of town last week. Those of you who have emailed me recently, I will work on your schedules or call you if I have questions when I get back. Hopefully, we can get most schedule changes made before school starts but if not, we have up to a week after school starts to try to make changes. I understand classes are full and it will be but we can try.
My goal this year is to get to know my new students and I will be scheduling individual appointment with each sophomore to discuss present and future goals. I'm glad we have homeroom again because it will make it easier to communicate with you. We also have referral slips in the Counseling Office for students to complete if they would like to meet with a counselor. Students will need to fill out the slip and put it in the basket at Ms. desk.
Open House is August 17 from 4:00 to 6:00. You should have received the letter from Dr. Spence in the mail with details about the Open House schedule, If you did not, it is on Glynn Academy's Homepage located on the top right hand corner.
Again, welcome back to school. I will be your counselor for the next 3 years and I am looking forward to working with you.
July 29, 2010
Students need to make sure they pick up their final transcripts in Ms. Anderson's office. All transcripts were uploaded to Georgia Student Finance Commission by the end of June so all colleges should have HOPE eligibility information by now. Approximately 52% of seniors with college prep diplomas qualified for HOPE.
I will be uploading emails on Teacher Web for the class of 2013 and deleting the class of 2010 emails. If you are a parent of a student from the class of 2013 and you are not on my list, please let me know and I will add you. I will be out of town next week and then back to school on
August 10 if you need to reach me. Good luck to the class of 2010. I will miss you.
We made AYP with over 80% on the graduation rate!
June 16, 2010
Senior videos are ready for pick up in Ms. Anderson's office. If you have not ordered a video but would like to, you my contact Johnny Clark at 912-222.3590.
June 8, 2010
I hope you're enjoying your summer so far. If anyone would like to donate their cap and gown for future graduates, please drop it off in Ms. Hummel's office. Today is my last day and Tammy's last day. After today, you will need to pick up your transcripts from Ms. Anderson in the front office if you haven't done so already. Please remember to mail one to the college.
I hope to continue to hear about how the class of 2010 graduates are doing. Please drop me an email from time to time and let me know how your sons/daughters are doing. Have a great summer and good luck next year.
May 27, 2010
I want to congratulate the graduates on a beautiful graduation ceremony. I was fighting back tears when they sang. The graduates came together to support and respect each other and it was the best roll call I've ever witnessed. I was so proud of "my kids." The class of 2010 started with 428 students and graduated 352; we'll have a few more joining them this summer.
I hope transcripts will be ready by Thursday. We haven't received the batch of transcripts yet and don't have school on Monday and I won't be there on Tuesday. I'll send another newsflash when they're done.
..
May 24, 2010
One more Newsflash... Congratulations to the Graduates! The class of 2010 has been a wonderful class with a lot of firsts; the biggest class to graduate to date, the highest scores on the GHSGT's, the first graduates with block scheduling (and the record of 32 credits attained by Ashley Pickren), students who were here there and everywhere (GICA full time or part-time, CCGA, early grads and even earlier grads from the class of 2011, PLC, Success Academy and some were even at GA all day every day), acceptances to over 70 different colleges and universities, including universities in England and Wales, scholarships totaling over 2,500,000 excluding HOPE. A majority of students took advantage of block to take extra academics. Many students had 5 or more credits in science and math and several students took more than one language.
Tomorrow morning will start with breakfast in the cafeteria. Each student will get 4 tickets tomorrow during practice and will get an opportunity to get in line for more tickets. Students who owe money will not get tickets so it's important that seniors get their fines taken care of first thing in the morning. Practice will be over around 11:30. Practice will be on Jekyll on Wednesday. Summer Waves is giving graduates discounts if they want to go to the park on Wednesday after practice. We told the girls to wear white dresses and white shoes. They will have to do a lot of walking so keep that in mind in the selection of shoes. Boys were told to wear khaki pants, white shirts, ties and dress shoes. Please make sure you give yourself enough time to get to graduation because it gets congested getting on to Jekyll. Students who are honor graduates will receive their honor cord during the ceremony.
We will make 2 transcripts for each graduate and they will be available for pick up one week after graduation. It will be the student's responsibility to mail their final transcript to the college they will be attending. The transcripts will be in the Counseling Office until June 4 and then will be moved to Dr. Ballowe's office. Students have been picking up their folders which include the cumulative folders from elementary school. Please be on the look out for these and ask your student if they have picked up their folder from Ms. Cirmotich. The folders have copies of birth certificates, SS cards, testing, pictures, etc. so please make sure you get these folders.
Congratulations again to everyone and best wishes for a bright and happy future to the graduates. I'll see you on Wednesday.
May 14, 2010
Honors Night is Monday, May 17 at 7:00 in the GA Auditorium. If you received an invitation, please make sure to RSVP's to Ms. Cirmotich.
Herff-Jones will be here one last time next Wednesday, May 19 during lunches. If your student still needs to pick up his/her cap and gown, they will need to bring $30.00 in cash.
May 11, 2010
15 days until May 26!!!
Below is the exam schedule for seniors:
Wednesday, May 19 rd and 4th block (and 5th period) exams
Thursday, May 20 st and 2nd block (and zero period) exams
Friday, May 21 8:15-9:45 a.m. Extended time block for students who need the time to meet the standards
All teachers of seniors must post senior final grades by 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 21
Honors Night is Monday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the GA Auditorium.
Invitations have been mailed if your student is included in the program. I am including college acceptance and scholarship information in the program. Please ask your student to complete a form in the Counseling Office if they have not already given me their form. They can pick up the form from Ms. Cirmotich and leave it on my desk (if I'm not in my office because of AP testing) .
Because I will continue to be out of my office much of this week, please email me if you need to get in touch with me and I will email you back at night.
April 28, 2010
Please look at "Scholarships" on my homepage for information on the Alumni Scholarships.
April 14, 2010
Six weeks to graduation! You will be getting a letter in the mail soon with the dates and time for all of the end-of-year activities. I have included dates on the "Senior Year Calendar" on this website. You may also refer to dates of AP exams on the "Testing Calendar."
Many of your students have already made their college choice and you have submitted deposits for housing. May 1 is the date that colleges need to be notified unless your student has applied to a college with a later admission deadline. Hopefully you have all completed the FAFSA and/or the HOPE application. Both can be found on GAcollege 411. If you have completed the FAFSA, it also covers HOPE. A final HOPE eligibility list will be submitted to college Financial Aid offices in June. In the meantime, you should receive a preliminary award letter from the college. You may contact the Financial Aid office at the college with any questions. I will be asking students to give me information on college acceptances/college choice and scholarship awards. These will be included in the Honors Night Program which is scheduled for May 17.
The next Progress Report is next Wednesday, April 21. If your students is struggling with a class he/she needs to graduate, please keep in close contact with the teacher to make sure they will pass the class! It's important for students to keep their grades up through the end of their senior year because colleges look at final transcripts and base final decisions on them!
I will be out of my office and hard to reach during AP testing. Please email me with questions or concerns and I will try to respond in the evening.
March 23, 2010
Herff Jones will be here Wednesday, March 24, 2010 during the two lunch periods.
March 15, 2010
New scholarships hav been added to my webpage. Please remind your students to check them out and apply.
March 9, 2010
Money for Grad Bash is due to Ms. Mergl by this Friday. Please make sure that your student does not owe any fees. Seniors will not be able to attend Grad Bash, purchase Prom tickets, receive final transcripts or get tickets for the Graduation ceremony if they have outstanding fees. Students may check with Ms. Murray in Mr. Saund's office. She has the list and it's pretty long! Ms. Murray also sent the list out to teachers so students may want to check with their 2nd period teachers first.
Yes, Graduation is on Wednesday, May 26 on Jekyll. I've gotten a few emails about this. It does seem odd since it's always taken place on Fridays before. As I get any information about graduation, finals, etc. I'll be posting it on the "Senior Year Calendar" on my website.
The first 9 weeks of second semester ends Friday. Students will get progress reports on
March 17.
March 2, 2010
I hope spring will be in the air soon. Twelve more weeks till graduation!
I have added an Education Scholarship to my website. Please continue to remind your students to look at the scholarships. Several have March due dates. I have gotten an extension on the Military Officers Association scholarship. It's a $2000 scholarship and the only requirement is that a member of the family has served in a branch of the military and they're coming to pick the application up on Thursday. Also remind your students to look at the Senior Year Calendar.
February 26. 2010
This is a reminder about 2 scholarship deadlines. Military Officers Scholarship and ROTC Scholarship for $2000 and St. Simons Island Rotary Scholarship for $8000 are due to me on Monday.
February 10, 2010
The Valdosta State rep will be here tomorrow, February 11 at 11:30 in the Career Center.
February 2, 2010
Please encourage your children to check out the scholarships on my website. There are several that have February deadlines.
January 28, 2010
Important: If your child has not yet ordered their cap and gown, they need to do so by the end of the day tomorrow. Call Addie Blocker at Herff Jones. The number is: 912-764-9314; the website is: herffjonessegeorgia.com.
Please check the Senior Calendar on my website for additional dates of college rep visitations.
Information on the St. Simons Island Rotary Club Scholarship has been added to Scholarships on my homepage.
Students and parents should be completing the FAFSA and/or HOPE Scholarship application at this time. You can access the FAFSA link through Financial Aid on my homepage and the HOPE application through GACollege411 under Colleges on my homepage. The HOPE application only covers HOPE. The FAFSA application covers all scholarships and grants, including HOPE. A preliminary HOPE eligible list is sent to Georgia Student Finance Commission in February. The final HOPE eligible list is sent in late June. Financial Aid offices mail award letters to students and parents (usually in late April or May) based on preliminary HOPE eligibility status. The award letter will also include any other scholarships or loans that a student is being awarded.
January 26, 2010
Jacob Nyenhuis Scholarship added on the website.
January 25, 2010
New scholarships added to the Scholarship site on my homepage.
Important! The workshop is tomorrow, Monday, Jan 25. I had it right on my homepage and senior calendar but wrong in the newsflash. Senior teachers were also given a handout to give to seniors to bring home last week. Sorry for the confusion!
January 20,2010
One more thing... I will be out of the office from Jan. 20 - Jan. 25.
January 20, 2010
Please make sure to look at the Scholarship site on my website; some of the deadlines are coming up. Also, remember to come to the Financial Aid Workshop on Monday, Jan. 26 at 6:00 in the Auditorium
January 10, 2010 & January 11, 2010
Our system has been really messed up so I'm not sure if the last newsflash about scholarships went through. I'm re-sending.
Check It Out! New scholarships have been added on my homepage on the scholarship icon.
January 5, 2010
Welcome back for the final semester of the senior year! Hasn't it gone by fast?
There will not be a PTSA meeting tomorrow night at 5:00; just the Open House at 5:30.
Schedules may be printed on Infinite Campus or picked up at Open House. It would be quicker to print them in advance so you don't have to wait in line and can go directly to your classes.
January 1, 2010
Happy New Year! Second semester begins Thursday, January 7. There will be a PTSA meeting in the GA Auditorium from 5:00 - 5:30 and and Open House from 5:30 - 6:30 on Wednesday, January 6. Come by to get 2nd semester schedules and meet teachers. We're in the home stretch Class of 2010!
P.S. I have not been able to access my email. Please wait until we return to school to contact me after I get the problem resolved. I changed a lot of schedules by the end of last semester. The master schedule was based on schedules which were set at the beginning of the year. Therefore, it is very hard to change schedules at this point because classes are full. My priority will be to change any schedules for students who are in the wrong class or need to repeat a class they need to graduate.
Please inform your students to specify on their appointment form if they are not in the right class.
Thanks!

2. If a block or period course is ending, or if a skinny, an A/B or a period course is at the mid-point, and if a student has a course semester average between 80% and 89% and has no more than two (2) absences (excused or unexcused) in the class;

The deadline for the Early Action Application to UGA is approaching fast. I'm sure you're aware that the POSTMARK deadline is Oct. 15 which means that everything can still be mailed on that day as long as it's port marked before 5:00 p.m. Most college and scholarship applications are postmark deadlines, although some are not, so it's important to know that. I have submitted close to 40 counselor evaluations and transcripts (anyone who came in and asked for transcripts for UGA). If there is anyone who wants to apply early and has not come in, they need to come see me tomorrow. When students check their status online, they'll be able to see if the counselor report has been submitted which also means a transcript has been sent. It takes them a few days to get things together and entered. Please make sure that your children have asked College Board and/or ACT to submit test results UGA. October scores can be included. This is the only way UGA accepts scores. The college reps are still on the road visiting schools and doing College Fairs. It will be November before they are done and can start looking at applications. Over 70% of applicants who enrolled at UGA last year applied through Early Action. Students can either be accepted, deferred or denied. Deferred students will need to complete Part II of the application, get a teacher recommendation and submit their application by the Jan. deadline. Students who are denied, would have been denied even if they applied Regular Decision.
There are several reps coming the week of Oct. 20: Georgia Tech, UGA, UGA Honors, Valdosta State and Georgia College and State. Please check the Senior Year Calendar for dates and times. I am now working on other college applications. I can nominate 5 students for scholarships at Emory so please tell your students to let me know if they are interested in Emory.
Please tell your students to let me know if they are applying to any schools that need a counselor recommendation. I will need a copy of the secondary report or evaluation form and a resume. I also need to know at least 2 weeks before the due date.
I'm impressed with how diligent your children have been in completing their applications. A lot of them will be all done by the time you can smell the turkey cooking in the oven (Thanksgiving) and then they can relax a little and hopefully enjoy their senior year.

Email sent today from Christy Rikard at Georgia Southern. Please let me know if you are interested in attending this event as soon as possible and I will let her know.
I just wanted to let you know about a great opportunity for your seniors that is taking place next Friday, September 18th at Georgia Southern from 8:30 AM-1:30 PM. We are having our annual Honors Visitation Day. This is a very small event aimed at showing prospective students what the University Honors Program is all about.
We have 3 Honors Day events this fall and only about 20 students attend each session, so it's quite a small setting. The students get a lot of one on one time & exposure with the Director of the Honors Program, Dr. Steve Engel, which may give them that extra boost when it comes down to making the cut for the Honors Program/1906 Scholars next year.
If you have any students that qualify and are interested please email me back and I'll be happy to sign them up. Only a few spots remain so if they are interested they'd need to let me know asap. They need to have a 1200+ on the SAT (CR & Math only) or a 27+ ACT composite score and a 3.5 GPA.
This is a GREAT opportunity for your seniors to get an in-depth personalized look at the University Honors Program! Let me know if any of your students are interested in attending.
September 8, 2009
Please encourage your students to meet with college representatives when they visit our campus. They don't need to miss an entire block of class time but it's important to make a contact with an admissions rep of the college they are interested in being admitted to. These same reps make up the admission committee and take note of students' interest in their school. They are also a good contact for questions about the institution. I will send a newsflash when I know a rep is visiting (see below also) and I will also post it on the Senior Year Calendar on my homepage.
Additionsl visits from Reps:

August 5, 2009
Welcome back! School starts tomorrow at 8:15. Students will receive their schedules and other paperwork that needs to be completed during their first period class tomorrow. Please tell your students that if they don't receive a schedule, they need to find an administrator on Mansfield St. who will tell them where they need to be. Administrators will have a list of all students and their 1st period class. Mrs. Hummel is trying to complete and change as many schedules as possible (as I write this) by tomorrow. You may want to check on Infinite Campus tonight to see if your child's schedule is correct. If it's not done by tomorrow, it will be by Friday. If your student asked for a change which might effect their 1st period class, they need to come to the registrar's office tomorrow morning before 8:00 a.m. to pick it up. Schedules will not be changed after Monday unless a student has been placed in the wrong class.
I am still not working out of my office therefore, I am not near my phone. The best way to reach me is by email or you may call Tammy Cirmotich at ext. 3203 and leave a message for me.
I hope everyone has a great start for the year tomorrow. Before we know it, it will be May.
August 3, 2009
I have posted he 2009-2010 Testing Schedule on my homepage.

There is an Open House at Glynn Academy for parents and students on Monday, August 3 from 4:30 to 7:30. Open House information for all schools is on Glynn County's homepage at: www.glynn.k12.ga.us. Check Important Dates/Events on the top right of the page.
July 28, 2009,
Mrs. Hummel has all the schedule revisions that I gave her. They have not all been corrected yet, but hopefully they will be by summer madness on Friday. You may go on Infinite Campus and review your schedules at this time. I will be at summer madness from 1:00 - 4:00 on Friday, July 31 at Glynn Academy with the schedules and you can discuss changes with me then. Ms. Drew is making another call to remind you that summer madness is on Friday not Wednesday. Some of you have appointments to see me before school starts. We have a week after school starts to make changes so if you could not get an appointment before August 6, I will see you during the first week. My main focus will be to make sure that everyone is scheduled for classes they need to graduate!
Once I have reviewed the updated transcripts and have updated my check sheets, you will get a copy along with a letter mailed to you, including important dates and information for the senior year. I will also be updating my website with the current testing calendar and this year's schedule. I will have a parent night sometime in the next few weeks.
We have some changes in the Guidance department this year. Ms. Cirmotich will be our secretary. Ms. Gensmer will be working with our assistant principal for instruction, Ms. Drew. Mr. Dittmar will be the sophomore class counselor. I am relocating to Mrs. Smith's office so I may be surrounded by boxes when you come see me!
I've enjoyed communicating with you , and especially your children throughout the summer. Please continue to email me. Also, visit my website and encourage your children to visit my website for college and financial aid resources. I will be posting scholarship information on there as well and of course, I'll continue sending you newsflashes. Once the beginning of the year madness is over, I would like for students to schedule conferences for college and post high school advising.
Below is a message from Daryl Moore, Vice-President of the PTSA for 2009-2010:
The Glynn Academy PTSA-Parent, Teacher, Student Association is calling on all parents, teachers and students-yes...students to become members and volunteers for our PTSA! We're including the students this year so they can have a voice in our school. After all, it's all about the kids! The 2009-2010 school year is just around the corner and we need YOU! We have lots of informative programs in the works for this year. There were over 2000 students at GA last year with a PTSA membership of only 184. Come on folks...Let's blow these numbers out of the water! Check out our PTSA website-linked to the GA website and/or our facebook page. The cost is minimal and if you register at Open House, your name will be entered in a drawing for some fabulous door prizes! Please stop by any of the tables at Open House to find out ways you can help! PTSA at GA-the best way to stay "in the know" at Glynn Academy!

GHSGT RE-TESTS ARE NEXT WEEK
Monday, July 13: Language Arts - 8:15, Social Studies - 12:15
Tuesday, July 14: Math - 8:15, Science - 12:15
Wednesday, July 14 - Writing - 8:15
Review sessions for the tests are on-going all of this week from 8:30 - 11:30.
If you have not received a schedule in the mail, it's probably because Mrs. Hummel had difficulty making it work and I will need to discuss it with her. New schedules will not be mailed home. Students are supposed to receive them during Summer Madness on July 31.
If you want to schedule a conference with me when I get back to school, please call the school and ask for Lynette Adams. I am out of town and cannot schedule appointments or answer emails for the remainder of the month. I'll try to respond to those emails that I have already received.
July 1, 2009
I have a copy of all the current schedules and I'm comparing them with what I submitted to Ms. Hummel. I am pulling all those that I'm finding problems with so I can discuss them with Ms. Hummel. I'm also forwarding her your emails. She is on vacation for 2 weeks. I will be going to 2 conferences this month and will be out of town most of the month but I will find some time to meet with her. You may resume your emails to me the last week of July. Our secretary, Ms.Cirmotich will be back in the office on July 27. Please call her if you need to schedule an appointment.
June 24, 2009
I've received a lot of emails about problems with schedules. I never had the opportunity to meet with Mrs. Hummel
before I left work so I wrote out for Mrs. Hummel what students requested. Because I don't have the master schedule I can't tell if the schedules worked. What I will do as you email me is try to work out problems via email. Since I'm not at work, it may take me a little time to get back with you because I'm fitting emails in when I have time. Mrs. Hummel is on a 12 month contract so she will be at GA during the summer and I can continue to work with her from home. Tammy Cirmotich is in the office until Friday so if you want to schedule a meeting with me beginning August 3rd, you can still contact her at 267-4100, ext. 3202. We still have plenty of time to get schedules straightened out.
Remember to contact the Golden Isles Career Academy if you need to complete an application or to take the ASSET test for Culinary Arts, Salon Services, Law Enforcement or HVAC.
June 11, 2009,
Schedules should be mailed by the registrar's office soon. I've also included a letter with the schedules. We have made every attempt to give students the classes they want. I reviewed each schedule 3 times and made notes on each schedule for Mrs. Hummel. In some cases, there were conflicts with the master schedule. You may email me or Mrs. Hummel if you would like a change and we will try to make a change if it works. I will be available for appointments beginning August 3rd.We have been told that once school starts, schedules can only be changed if students are in the wrong class or they need a class to graduate.
I HOPE YOU HAVE A FUN AND RELAXING SUMMER!
Progress Reports are being mailed on Monday, June 1st. I'm including a letter and summer school brochure for any students who have failed a class either this semester or in the past so that they can hopefully be caught up entering their senior year. Summer school registration is Wednesday, June 3rd in the Media Center from 8:15 - 11:45 and 1:30 - 3:15. Summer school begins June 8 and ends June 30. Sessions are Monday through Thursday with morning session running from 8:00-12:00 and afternoon session running from 12:30-4:30. Lunch will be provided in the cafeteria for students who stay all day. Each class costs $50.00 however, financial aid is available. Since there is a very short time between grades being mailed and summer school registration, call me if you miss the June 3 registration date and I will try to get your student registered before the beginning of summer school on June 8. Students can not miss more than 2 days during summer school in order to receive credit for the class.
May 27, 2009
I will be out of the office tomorrow morning for graduation practice and will not be staying late tomorrow so I can attend graduation. Grades will be posted Friday afternoon. Please come by Friday afternoon or Monday if you need information and or registration for summer school.
